I'm a bit of a nut at obscure religious trivia.

From Revelations, 13:18

"One who understands can calculate the number of the beast, for it is a number that stands for a person. His number is six hundred and sixty-six."

Each of the letters in the Kabbalistic Alphabet (as well as Greek) have a numerical value. Many combinations of letters, including many people's names, will naturally then add up to 666. One possible candidate for this reference is Emporer Nero, a man who personified persecution of the early church. Also note that 6 falls short of the "perfect 7", and here it is in triplicate, as if hyperbole for dramatic effect. As for whether or not this is how things go, I don't know, but the number was chosen for a reason, not at random.
