Sounds good but what is an Orrery Chamber?

Trapiki
February 13th, 2011, 06:06 PM
An Orrery is a room that has a model of the solar system in it. It's usually mechanical. It shows the path of the planets as they spin around the sun and can accurately predict alignments based on the previous speed and track of each of the planets.

I think I good example is the Planet room in the end of the First Tomb Raider Movie. If you play Oblivion and have the DLC of the Orrery then you can also use that as an example.

A mechanical device illustrating the relative positions and orbits of planets and moons in a solar system.

A couple of examples that come to mind:
The dead settlements in Pitch Black
Buggenhaggen's planetary room Final Fantasy VII

first EOW! :D
Been trying to practice a little more environment painting lately so I thought I should give EOW a try.
This is my concept, I'm going for a kind of ritual bonfire scene.

This sounds like a fun topic. I'm think I'm in.
The first orrery to come to mind is the one from The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion.
Has anyone here had any success with importing 3D models from programs like Lightwave into photoshop?

Very nice take on the subject. Reminds me of some kind of shamanistic rite. I also like the colors and composition.

nice starts to all.

janjager.. feels sorta traditional
jei.. has a military vibe to it
homereid.. looks ritualistic

i think im gonna go outside my comfort zone and do something similar to a museum showcase feel

Duman - As far as I know you can import .3ds and .obj files among others, but only in the extended version.

JanJager - Thanks man, actually that's exactly what I'm aiming for. Very nice sketch, keep going.

Trapiki I like your thumbnail very clear, lets see it bigger!

Homerid Great start for your first EOW, love the orange blue contrast. And the silhouette fits nicely. Cant wait to see you render it more. I can see lots of fabric hanging on the branches and maybe an animal sacrifice. :D

JanJager Nice start man, a few of the elements are a bit confusing but im sure you'll make it come together nicely. cant wait to see more. :D

Jeiwo Yeah awesome scifi route! Im glad you jumped in on this, i was going to do it but yours it totally better. Very clear thumbnail.

Kir Nuyts Love the shineyness of the orb the building architecture is looking great cant wait to see where you place the planets!

Here's mine. Im trying to build the building around the orrery. Let hope i get this one done.

Great topic! I hope I can find the time to do this one. Its nicely lined up with the ChoW too :)
First thumbnail sketches.
Dont really like the first one.

For this one I was thinking, steam punk first of all. And I imagined two characters walking up the stairs, one introducing the other to the machine. Maybe One dominant light source from the left, a spot light, like hes just turned on the lights. Then I could use moon light and monitor light for the rest.

Dayum, nice stuff guys, great theme too.

Trapiki - Liking the arches and things, reminds me of a gazebo type of building in a Star Wars game, had the whole deserted, moonlit feel too.

Homerid - Awesome. You got any plans for the sky? Like dramatic clouds? Or maybe a big starlit sky. I don't know, just keep it up.

JanJager - Niiiiice, man, loving the colours, looks like a steampunk bronze kind of structure. Lighting is great too.

JeiWo - The colours and lighting are cool, could make some dramatic shadows from the people onto the walls behind them.

Kir Nuyts - I agree with +oas+ that it has a dead space feel, great work on the walls and pillar things. I'd up the lighting on the sphere more, make shadows, and a whole pulsing glow thing that fills the room, but whatever, looks great as is already.

Jaunay - Great camera angle, I'd throw in some basic people shapes in the bottom though, just so you keep the scale all regular.

Malakuko - Nice angle and composition, and loving the steampunk aspect. If you're really going for steampunk, I'd say focus on the light/colour more, nice hazy orangey bronze glow would be awesome.

Anti-11 - Liking the idea, looks just like my lectures, how everyone sites at the back. :D You could change the pillars and roof slightly, maybe go for a dramatic dome type room?

Mr. Gadbury - Nice composition, scale, everything. The pillars at the sides and end of the room are awesome, nice, dramatic scale.

Duman - The headdresses are a really good idea, you'll get some awesome silhouettes and shadows with them. Perspective on the floor circles doesn't really match up with the walls perfectly, but that's easily fixed.

Update

Duman
February 15th, 2011, 01:46 PM
Homerid-I really like your ancient take on the subject. And while I think the image is definitely working, I wonder what it would look like with a really vibrant star field. You know, with reds, purples and greens. Almost like an aurora borealis.

JanJager -I think you have a pretty solid foundation. I really like the orange color, perhaps you could incorporate a lot of ornate bronze or some.

JeiWo-I really like the composition and color of this piece. It seems like a map room on some galactic battleship or something. Maybe a space station. I would love to see some really cool flourishes done with the star system.

Kir Nuyts- Really like your image. Nothing to add really, except that I feel more figures should be interested in the map. It seems a little lonely right now.

Jaunay- I like the scale of your image. Seeing the little door really adds to the scene. I think more planets may be needed, however. Maybe they could even be extended from the current one, like moons or something.

Malakuko- I like where your image is headed, the tilted composition is cool. I might push the right wall a little farther away from the orrery, however, as having a 360 degree accessibility to the device would be helpful.

Anti-11- you have a nice sense of scale with yours as well. Reminds me of a huge amphitheater or lecture room. Now all you need to add is the planets.

Mr. Gadbury- I love your style. A style, which for the life of me I can't seem to replicate. The image is looking great.

Jaunay
February 15th, 2011, 06:56 PM
Malakuko Clear thumbs so far, I like the angle and the thought behind the light sources. Should look really impressive from what ive seen. Are you going to use this a background for your CHOW? Making them work together could be cool.

Anti-11 Ohh very big and open space, i can start to see the story already, itll be nice seeing how you interpret a future classroom.

Mr Gadbury Your values are very solid and its good to see that the people aren't the full focus. I know what you mean about doing non organic environments, although you seem to have it down so far. Dont stress its going to look great. /scrolled down/ oh man great progress. The colours work really well and the long curtain/wall hangings are always a great addition.

Duman Looking good so far, the centre is fairly detailed, and if youre having trouble with the bg, if you have the assets in your piece as separate layers turn off the centre and just focus on the other elements. Maybe that will help. Also thanks for the feedback more planets are being added as we speak. :D

Droid Thanks man, already on it. I'm just putting in the peoples now. Cant wait to see what you produce!

--

Here's a small update, i printer out the thumbnail and did some sketching over it so get the layout of the elements and planets right. I'm going to add 1 and 2 together, have a gear wall and use the composition on the planets from 1.

Wheee now to the fun part more rendering.

Awesome concepts so far! I'm new, so not sure if I'm supposed to give positive criticism, but here we go!

Jaunay, love the colours you picked for this. The middle ring looks a bit oddly shaped though, like it's not a good ellipse. But I really like the atmosphere.

Mr. Gadbury, great details and textures. The gold of the orrery does stand out very much against the silver background, but the concept overall; love it!

Malakuko, I love the red carpet 8D

Very curious to see how this will all turn out! I'm working hard to have a participating entry by the end of the week too.

Gadbury
February 16th, 2011, 08:56 AM
Thanks for the comments everyone, I'll try to crit everyones as I think of things to crit.

Edit: Couple of crits (helpful I hope...)

Duman - For the background maybe you could use some kind of star field behind the two big prongs holding/generating the orrery. Other than that I think I would just carry on defining things a bit more.

Jaunay - I think the values look better in the latest version. Everything looks quite solid so I would probably carry on designing it all, maybe hints of detail on the construction of it.

Great starts from everyone though, I'll try to think of some crits when I see more.

Just more on mine, added more going on down the bottom. I like the addition of some story maybe, but the people are starting to look out of perspective with each other I think.

Homerid
February 16th, 2011, 12:31 PM
Kir Nuyts - Great start, I want to see how it develops.

Jaunay - Now I'm definitely going to try the animal sacrifice, hadn't thought of it thanks. I'm going to agree with Mr. Gadbury on your last wip, you have some good values, maybe going back to a b/w version and start coloring from it would help, also check the shape on the farthest ring, its looking a bit distorted right now.

Malakuko - Not a lot to comment, the wip is looking solid, as Duman said try to open up some more space for the actual device, keep going.

Anti-11 - I'm digging the classroom approach, can't wait to see the progress.

Mr. Gadbury - Nice progress man, last update looks really nice, I like how you made focus on the golden device. Only crit I have is that the overall feel of the room doesn't really say "orrery chamber" to me, maybe is the size of the hall in comparison with the device, or the people walking by, that makes it feel like a transition room with an orrery installed. Hope it helps.

Duman - I was thinking on expanding the palette and adding more color, like you said a starry sky with a variety of hues, or maybe some colorful mystical fumes around, I'll give them a try in my next update, I wasn't around internet yesterday so I got into rendering other things. Thanks for the feedback.
Nice design on that chamber, as far as the background goes I think Mr. Gadbury's idea of the star field fits well, sort of a window to void space, it would also provide good contrast with the orrery.

Droid - Thanks, I think I'm going for clouds, already have a big moon in the center and its too bright to show stars :P

Bnoch - Freaking cool :O Seriously, your current wip already has lots of potential, can't wait to see how you push it even farther, thumbs up.

Urötskidoji - Nice thumbs, I like the first and third from above, there's not a lot of shape definition yet but you have some good composition possibilities there.

slooow update :S (slightly changed the aspect ratio, added some clouds, defined the shapes on the structure... not much more)

First time participating in the EOW, and terrible at environments, but here's a first sketchling version of what I'm going for. I'm aiming at an orrery of a lost civilisation, lost somewhere in the jungle, overgrown by weeds and surrounded by gnarled trees. There might be some pillars added here and there, but we'll see.

Edit: new update added (since it's not been long since the last post).

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c268/Duman123/Untitled-2.jpg

But I'm having some issues. I want to have a more painterly style, but for some reason something isn't "clicking". I feel like I am putting in too much time and producing mediocre results. Its like I don't know how to "loosen up". I want to know how to paint more like Mr. Gadbury and Bnoch.
I curse these useless fingers and incompetent mind.

Gadbury
February 17th, 2011, 02:23 PM
Duman the second ones looking much better now.

My technique for painting involves a lot of the smudge tool, with a natural brush shape on it - That could be what you are seeing in my paintings. I set the key 'V' to my smudge brush to I switch between B (brush) and V all the time. I'll share my tool set for photoshop if you like, so you can try it out. Its a new set so theres not many brushes and a couple of dodgy texture brushes though. Its the tool called 'Smudge' with the japanese symbols after it

Fun round.

Heliocide
Good start. Perhaps add some hard edges at the focal point. Also have in mind how light reflects when it his a surfaces.
+oas+
Nice take on the topic. Like a Stonehenge inspired low tech oerry. I like the sharp silhouetting rocks. Perhaps add some sharp shadows.
Anti-11
A bit early to crit.
daflom
I like it. Perhaps have a bit stronger perspective on the nearest path.
Formic Acid
Nice picture and good idea to have the viewpoint from the oerrey.
Bnoch
Absolutely brilliant.
Duman
the upper version is my favourite. I like the mix between Inca Indians and hightech.
komugurakingdom
Good start. Nice idea.Perhaps show some more broken building details. Don't forget to decide where the light comes from to help you work out light and shadows.
Homerid
Coming good. At this point the the ground looks a bit moth. Why not add some stars.
Mr. Gadbury
Great. wonderful feeling. I would put my focus on rendering the oerery to get the ellipses relay accurate.
Urötskidoji
First my favourite.
Jaunay
I like the mode in it. Nice forms but you could work a bit more on the ellipse shapes.
Malakuko
Nice colours perspective and design. Looking forward to see you render it out more.
Kir Nuyts
Great.
JeiWo
Very good. Nice design and mode. Looking forward to see you add some highlights perhaps some neon glow.

Been amusing myself by adding structures.

daflom: I'm liking it! If you can give this enough detail and shine to give this the right sci-fi feel or creepy quality - this could be a winner!

bnoch: Great stuff. I like both of your versions. In the first one I spotted the birds and thought to myself "how cliche", but birds really work. Such an effective way give a sense of scale and movement.
Maybe a silly question, but since I'm still not quite sure I'm using the best method: How do you go from your black and white version to a color version, if you chose to do so? Do you first colorize the entire image (in Photoshop, via Image Adjustment, colorize) or do you create a new layer, set it to Color and paint with color?

komugurakingdom
February 20th, 2011, 04:19 AM
JanJager: Thanks for the feedback. I really do need some more contrast... Will work on it now! I'm in love with your design as well, but be careful not to overdo it with the textures. It's okay to blend that a little in the back, and the arcs on the ceiling (if this is the correct word) are unintentionally flattened.

+oas+
February 20th, 2011, 05:15 AM
janjager.. thanx for the tip. like the last post, i agree with the same brick texture being overkill. some nice marble coluns might be an interesting way to go, youd get some great reflections.

pipobimbo

Looks nice, but maybe some more emphasis on the planets/stars?

komugurakingdom

Really nice setting, but perhaps you could make the planets bigger? Make the eye get caught on them first.

JanJager

Yeah, I took the first one, liked it best aswell! You got a really cool brick texture!

Heliocide

Try and get more depth into the picture. The rocks at the left and the right of the image should work as a
good frame for the middle "altar"

+oas+

I really dig where you´re going with the thumb you took. Will be interesting to see your update.

Anti-11

Not much to say, but I think that can be a really cool scene

daflom

Really nice colors and mood! Keep on it

Formic Acid

I like it, but right now I think its too small. You seem to have some cool design on the orrary mechanism, I wanna
see the whole epic thing!

Bnoch

Really, really stunning artwork! One thing I personally would like to see is bigger orbs!

Duman

Your picture has a lot of promise! Study perspective, I think that´s one of the main keys to paint great
environments.

Homerid

I really like your colors and the mood! Looking forward for an update on this one aswell!

which program offers a look similar to painting in real life, replicating thick paint, as if it has depth.

i have painter, but cant seem to nail that look down. is this something artrage achieves/ painter?

I honestly think it is painter that people use for that. I tried it couple times and the strokes seem to give that painterly effect. I did not pursue learning it though because it seemed so different from photoshop and i was waaay to slow at navigating and figuring out where things are. You could look up some free photoshop brushes that go by the name of "real brush strokes" or something similar. I am pretty sure if you are good at painter though you will achieve way better results for what you are trying to do.

I with you in that boat Emerging, I've tried to use painter but it runs even slower than photoshop does on my computer. Maybe i just need to stick at it some more. But i feel like anything that can be achieved in painter can be achieved in photoshop. I'd love for someone that knows painter and photoshop well to give some insights on this.

i used to use painter and pshop, but just use pshop now. i found painter way too buggy and it was always crashing. pshop is more stable on my mac, anyway. painter does have more "natural media" brushes and people who use it get amazing results. look at dan milligan (10th icon in the top row from the left) or of course the immortal ryan church. but pshop can do most of the same things once you master the brush tools. having said that, if you are windows, you can also check out paint tool SAI http://www.systemax.jp/en/sai/
it only works on windows tho!

also there are plenty of forum threads debating the relative merits on cA if you wanna get some more opinions.

you guys are all doing amazing stuff with this topic, btw. i am having so much fun lurking and checking out all the different concepts and glad i am not competing against this great artwork. looking forward to the finals.

Update:
http://trickstertoys.com/additional/dragon4lunch_restaurant02.jpg

Let me know how this reads. It seems to me 256 shades of grey are not enough. Can't Photoshop CS 5 give me more? Well .jpg can only give us 8bit,
so painting 16-bit kind of pointless.

Dragon4lunch, I'm in love with this concept (it reminds me of the hitchhiker's galaxy for some reason...) but be careful not to make it too dark.

Another EOW deadline that I will miss. ;_;

At least I have legit reasons this time. I've been ill with a nasty bout of the flu.

Absolutely lovely work as usual <3

Some awesome stuff guys, great variety of concepts.
Sorry for not posting in the last days, I have some university finals coming next week and I'm struggling to get some spare time to finish my piece.

So, last update. I went detail nuts in the last hours and this is the result :P, I'll probably change a few things but I'm pretty much done. Again thanks all for the feedback and support, and good luck in the voting!

Unfortunately, I'll have to call this final.
I had some other ideas, but nothing really came to reality.
Anyway, there are some great pictures already.

I was very disappointed in my work in the last EOW, so I wanted to make sure I had a really strong composition and value structure before I started.

I really like the idea of worlds within world and how string theory Buddhism and Hinduism all relate. I have two different thumbnails below based on these ideas

1) My first idea was of an Orrey of the Multiverse when Vishnu made up of "string" particles balances all the 10 dimensions of the Multiverse in his 10 hands. Within each world you can look down further and further levels till you get to our solar system. Vishnu is then standing on the back of a turtle with holds up the Cabali-yau shape (which is supposedly what a cross section of the next dimension would look like) in the vastness of space. I didn't know if this idea was too out there and no longer fit the brief so I came up with a second idea too. (this is the bottom one, accidentally uploaded in the wrong order)

2) This take place on a mountain top in a parallel universe. A high priest had a vision of what the Multiverse Orrey (from above) looked like and then the society built a temple a giant statue inside that looks like the 10 dimension down, out solar system. (this is the top one, accidentally uploaded in the wrong order)

I would love to hear anyone's thoughts on which one I should finish, just hope I have time.

Homerid, I really love your take on this, so different than anything I would have thought of, and the composition and rendering are top notch.

homerid.. looks noice ,but i do think the background needs work. it just looks unfinished. those shadows are great though.

skoenig.. that first one is badass.

emokun.. this looks very clean, only crit would be that some of the lights could maybe be a bit brighter or show some density. such as the moniter and floor lights.

+Oas+ - thanks! Any encouragement help after my epic disaster of an EOW last week. I realized I upload in the wrong order, I assume you like the top one (description 2), please let me know trying to choose which to finish, but mostly doing that one. :)

Oh, so we post our finals in this thread. Ok, here is my FINAL.

Description: This is a super-cool restaurant where you have to go up an elevator and exit in the center (inside the sun). From there you can chose between four different locations: The large restaurant in the center, inside the sun, or one of the planets. You walk there through the arms. The universe is a large simulation and on special occasions they even change it. Maybe they show old Star Trek episodes etc...

My final version. I didn't have time to further define the people, so I left them out in the end... Maybe some time in the future when I'll tweak the picture I'll add them in again. For now this is it :) First EOW!

Bnoch - Your work is amazing, do you have any demo showing your process further? Your WIP stages are great but I would love to know more. Have any tips or must read books or websites?

I really like your second concept too, your first was a beautiful painting, but I felt the overall idea wasn't as unique.

Trying to finish this up for the deadline, basically done with the overall temple structure lighting (though still need to add some firelight), need to finish the central statue and planets, going to be a long night. Any comments are more than welcome.

Thanks for the help with choosing which one to do :)

I probably won't be posting the poll until the 28th (Monday where I'll be at) so there's still time to get your entries in. New topic I'll try and have by tonight or tomorrow morn. Sorry for the lateness, been on vacation.

Will respond to all PM's/queries on the weekend. Still working on getting those EOW icons! Maybe if we PM the moderators enough it'll finally get done.

Vulgar, please let us know who the moderator is to send the PMs to. It's really about time EOW gets their icons. I think I asked about this 2 or 3 years ago!

PS: I made a little donation to conceptart.org, so maybe that helps :p

In photoshop
I'm using the edit/transform/wrap for curved surfaces
and the edit/transform/distort for flat surfaces.
I guess there are better methods for curving a surface around spheres an so on but transform alternatives are quit quick.
I tend to overload with structures. Its to fun to stay away from it.
I really like your entry beautiful light and atmosphere.
