THUNDERDOME 4: TERMINATOR 3 CONTEST!!! (November 30th, 2002 until December 31st, 2002)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
hey all...

this months contest for thunderdome is a big one! Here is the deal!

DO YOU HAVE THE INSPIRATION TO PAINT THE BEST TERMINATOR ILLUSTRATION ANYONE HAS EVER SEEN?

The contest is simple...make a painting of the TERMINATOR...it can be just him..it can be the world..it can be action oriented or just a fantastic illustration. Anything you want...it just has to be the terminator and OR the terminator world.

If you could make any painting you wanted of the terminator what would you do? Would it be a portrait movie poster? Would it be a battle illustration? you decide! anything goes.

DO NOT use any copyrighted material in your image...you should use the stuff available as resource but this image needs to be new and entirely your own. Can your image embody what it is that the terminator and the terminator world is about?

We hope so.

here are some words from the terminator people about the project...

"We are looking for your version of the the Terminator universe rendered in an image, a flash animation, desktops, or icons. Anything relating to the Terminator universe is fair game: your version of the Terminator story,
alternate timelines, TX concept art (the TX is the Terminatrix in T3), Terminator drawings/animations/models, skynet visualizations and so on. Feel free to think out of the box and do your thing.

A few unavoidable rules: No copyrighted materials may be used (i.e. you haveto generate all content yourself). No porn or killing pets (we must abide by
MPAA rules). All artists will have to digitally sign a legal agreement with C-2 PICTURES (the Production Company producing the film) that gives them the
right to display/use the work and protects the Terminator brand (ie you can't start licensing Terminator t-shirts with your artwork). You will be able to use the artwork for promotional purposes. Obviously any featured
piece on our site will be exposed to a worldwide audience of Terminator fans."

The prize for the contest is a good one. TONS OF EXPOSURE!! winner of this contest will be included in a gallery of select professional artists on the Terminator 3 official Website. You will be able to include a short biography, your email, and links to your image in that gallery.

The Terminator 3 website will get millions of visitors. People from all industries will see and view your work if you win. This is a great opportunity to get your work out there and to get the exposure you need on an image of your own art direction.

The past thunderdome contests proved that we can rise to the occasion.

The artists from eatpoo are also eligible for this contest.

Do not let eatpoo take this prize from conceptart.org!

If you are an eatpoo.com artist...We dare you to try!

contest DEADLINE is JAN 1 2003
.
Lets get it on!

jason and android
www.conceptart.org

PS..they may use this image for promotional use as well. Dont be surprised if it shows up on a tshirt or elsewhere. However this contest is unpaid. You do the illustration you get the exposure that you need to get your work seen. your name, email address, a short biography, a short description of the piece, a url to your site, and the actual piece/pieces of artwork will be on the site. This information will always be displayed with the artwork.

This is the kind of thing that can and may get you freelance work in the future. It is also the kind of thing that people all over the world will see.

you may use your image for promotional purposes. and there is nothing cooler than seeing your image in the big light as a featured artist on terminator3.com

android, jason, el coro, jaymz, and puddnhead are gonna be there as featured artists. JOIN US THERE!

there is a possibility of a tie..in which both winners would recieve their own featured artist section on the site

good luck all!

any questions you have...let em out here.

Maybe you could clarify this for me..
Are our designs of the Terminator supposed to be very similar to the way he is in the movies, or can we redesign him?

Avetice
December 1st, 2002, 12:41 AM
bah now there is legal info to worry about!
Do we have to sign this agreement with them before we submit our entry? ...
Where do we submit our entry, do we post them in this thread or email them to you jason or email them to someone at terminator3.com?
I checked out terminator3.com there isn't anything about sending art to them on their website or anything about any digital agreement to sign.

Jason Manley
December 1st, 2002, 01:06 AM
now avetice...why would you send it to terminator3.com? :mrt:

you submit here just like with every thunderdome contest.

they allowed me to bring another artist or two into the mix for the featured artist gallery. Rather than ask a previous winner we thought it would be a great idea to have a new winner get an opportunity for the exposure.

do not go contacting anyone...this is an exclusive opportunity for artists here on the art forums brought to you by android and myself through our direct and professional dealings with the producer of that site.

All images are to be posted here in this thread for submission to the contest. Judging will happen on jan 1 and the winner will be announced. the information to submit the work to their site will be passed along at that time.

amphex: if you redesign him...would he be terminator? hahaha as long as its terminator and terminator related I dont think it matters how you portray him.

make whatever you like...we will set the winner up with the necessary info.

as far as legal stuff...you are getting way ahead of yourself. you best just get painting or drawing or animating. got me? I have seen the agreement and basically what it says is that you agree that they can use your image on the site.

good luck all...lets get a great showing from our site...eatpoo will rise to the occasion. will you?

jason

PS..avetice..you do a nice image for the contest and Ill change your title to assistant manager!

it's amazing to see how thunderdome contest rises and rises with every single round.
this is just number 4 and we're doing illustration work for the terminator series! everything started with a "lumpy" gladiator design contest, remember?

thank you all for making this possible...

Nice idea...but i wish a better presentation of the results...the last contests one was disappointing to me...

Avetice
December 1st, 2002, 03:50 PM
where is there more information on the terminator world? I don't see much about it on the site, just about t3. I mean where can i find some good information about the details of the terminator world, if they just drew robots that looked cool for the first movie or if they actually used anything plausible, what are the robots made out of, how do the substances in that world operate? etc etc etc

I.was.ink
December 1st, 2002, 05:16 PM
All right this seems like its going to be fun. Okay, if we're going to paint the TERMINATOR wouldn't we have to use a picture of him as reference, but in the rules it says we can't use any copyrighted stuff. This is where I'm confused. The same thing applies for the machines and stuff, I'm not sure what I can use and what I can't. Sorry for not understanding, but I don't want to do something that isn't right, thanks.

P.S how can i change my AVATAR. Do I need to upload my image? thanks in advance!!!

Jason Manley
December 1st, 2002, 05:36 PM
rent the movies to see what he looks like

you can use any stuff as reference...but the picture created has to be your own.....you dont slave to the reference...you look at it and use it....hmmm...he has red eyes...I guess Ill make my eyes red...hmmm his robot head is sorta like a skull...I better be sure mine looks sorta like a skull.

no trace...not cut and paste....that is what it means to NOT USE copyrighted materials. no steal....just look.

got me?

foz...will you be in charge of the presentation?

j

Fozzybar
December 2nd, 2002, 04:34 AM
jason, what do you mean exactly with this question?

How about "stealing" sound, when making a animation for example?

Ok, i think we got the thing with the red eye and the skull, but i guess most of us are not sure about the look of the terminator we are supposed to paint/draw. I mean are we allowed to create a new terminator, which has got the basic elements like metal, red eye, skull etc., but looking different...like a longer head (giger's alien f.e.), big claws, integrated weapons etc...?

Jason Manley
December 2nd, 2002, 05:25 AM
you can paint arnie...you can paint the terminator robot...it is for the terminator site in the end if you win...but it better not look like the photo from the movie poster...

different pose...new sunglasses...same jacket if you want....

if the eyes are red in the resource make em red...that is not stealing...that is using the resource. if the resource has a terminator standing in a junk pile and your image is of him picking up a helicopter and smashing it on a car then you didnt rip off the resource. is this making sense?

i see the gray area you are wondering about...how to make new stuff within the boundaries of a specific world...that is the key...if i was making a charlie brown cartoon for a company that owned the license and I copied the drawings of a previous cartoon to do it then that would be copyright infrigement...however..if I were to look at charlie brown and draw charlie brown and animate him doing new things then it would be a new cartoon in the charlie brown universe.

but if you copy the exact eyes from the picture for your own that looks just like the copyrighted pic...then I will send mcotie to your house to administer a good ass whoopin.

you dont want that.

deal?

Okay, i got the point mr.manley, but what did you mean with "foz...will you be in charge of the presentation?"...

Batteram
December 2nd, 2002, 08:23 AM
Sounds like a cool comp. Drawing machinary and metal is not my forte but I'll give it a go. I was thinking of maybe doing a standard battle scene or something. Hhm, all I need to do now is find reference pictures of what the damn robot looks like...
Oh yeah, and Jason, is there only going to be one winner? I reckon when the judging is finished you should pick a couple of finalists, that is, the best terminator pics, and post em on the site and then label the winner within those ranks. By the way, who is going to do the judging? you or the t3 production company?

Cannibal80
December 2nd, 2002, 09:55 AM
You can make a flash movie??? Cooool!

I'm thinking of an interactive take on the scenes in the previous movies where he (T800) takes himself apart and repairs stuff... the excellent gouging-out-the-eye scene in the first movie totally made history! And the part in T2 where he rips open his wrist to show his metal wristbones...

I hope the new movie will be more gritty hardcore and less fx-heavy... giant explosions are cool but tend to minimize the effects of other, more subtle, scenes.

I kind of had the same question about media. This will be my first attempt at a thunderdome contest, and was wondering if it has to be a digital painting or if it could be any other form of media. I myself, as an industrial design student, happen to be rather fluent with prismacolor markers. Are we allowed to submit an entry that is done traditionally??

Fozzybar
December 6th, 2002, 04:28 AM
I think it's not a prob at all, if you want to make something non-digital...

But nobody answerde to my question...again:
What about sounds and music? Are we allowed to use the original music and sounds from the terminator-movies?

mtomczek

Sweet! Then count me in guys! the terminator is such an awesome idea. One idea i had for really good, hands on reference would be the new t-800 action figure from mcfarlane toys. I thought James Cameron was the concept artist for the first Terminator, but I am probably wrong.

December 12th, 2002, 06:31 PM
James Cameron is a writer/director, not an artist. He directed and wrote the Terminator films (including the upcoming release) among many other movies.

Nimrod
December 12th, 2002, 10:25 PM
James Cameron is actually a halfway decent artist. Though based of course on Giger's work, The alien queen from Aliens is his own design. He also drew all of Leonardo diCaprio's sketches from Titanic.
Not sure about Terminator, but my hero Doug Chiang worked on T2.

Stan Winston was the original concept artist for the Terminator. I remeber an interview where he said he designed so that it would fit exactly inside Arnould's body.

PhilHolland
December 13th, 2002, 07:53 PM
James Cameron did some of the concept work on T2.
And yeah he's a pretty good artist. I've seen
some of his other work on the net. He is also a
big fan of good artwork. I recall that he spent
a bit of money hiring this guy who only painted
the Titanic to do most of the design stuff on Titinic.
I have the book at home. Can't remember his name.

James cameron is a pretty good artist he started out in Fx and such. Before going on to directing he worked as the Art Director on "Battle Beyond the Stars" also was a miniature designer and constructor on the same film.

He was also a Matte painter on "Escape from New York"

He was also uncredited as the Designer of the queen Alien in ALIEN's

here is a link to James Cameron's credits (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Cameron,%20James#miscellaneousX20crew)

I thought I saw an interview with Stan Winston saying Cameron designed the terminator. Now it's eating at me to know for sure.

Fozzybar

pibb991:

The Terminator on the left is too prominent...think about a focus, a small area...currently there is no focus, since every part is eye-catching...

Also think about the structure and texture of the things you want to paint/draw. Terminators are made of metal...go for a more steel-like look, avoid washy looks. Same to the lights/laser. Currently it looks, as if the whole scenery is under water...
First make a rough sketch of your composition...think about starting to paint if you are pleased...also use different colors...it is possible to make good paintings with one color (monochrome), but it's much harder than the other way.
Enough said...2 weeks for you to make another cool entry!

Where are the other entries btw...slowly they should come...as for me, i don't think, i'll enter this time...

Don't forget, there is an outstanding account! Since this is a Terminator related contest, let's say it this way!

Thanks. :)

Now I have a bit of a problem, 'cause I've now made a version where the human side of the face has blood stains on it, and there's a computer text analysis box next to it saying what bloodtype it is and from who it is.

First off I thought I shouldn't add blood stains, 'cause it's a CAT scan after all, and a CAT scan can't detect blood stains. But then again, a current CAT scan can't detect single strands of hair or the colour of your eyes or skin either, so this is obviously a CAT scan done on a futuristic, much more advanced CAT scan machine.

(although it's signed with 2002, but that kinda has to be that way....)

I'm just unsure which one to use now...

Can I post this new version in here?

EDIT:

GAH!!! me ------> :bash: <------ also me!

I was worried about posting such a large image in here, especially when I have already submitted in the finished thread, but it didn't occur to me that I can of course LINK to the new version, so you can see how it looks if you want.

So here's the URL to the new version....well, not really a new version, just added what I said above:
[url removed now]

Which one is better?

EDIT 2: I finally went for the one with blood stains. See it in the other thread.

hey mcotie,

stellar entry for your poster!
me likey.
i didn't know if you were going to do any further refining, but if you do, my sole suggestion is defining the neck a bit. she's a strong gurl, but her neck lacks the tough scm (sternocleidomastiod) muscle that goes from the base of the skull to the clavicle and sternum. aside from that - she's one twisted sister!

the only thing i'd mention in a critiquing way is the metal skull part: the teeth arrangement looks a bit off and the skull has a very rounded overall feeling. not as harsh and tough as the girl is.

Just to add a little contribution to the question :
Cameron had drawn himself the Terminator concept (same thing for the Aliens queen ). He is a skilled artist ( he actually begans with SFX and matte paintings ) , maybe better drawer than Stan Winston. Even if you can dislike his renderings, he is an absolute maniac for details and he went to Stan Winston with the whole endoskeleton drawn...

He first did some concept arts depicting the Terminator with Lance Henriksen face. He initially meant the cast for him, before meeting Arnie and transforming the whole concept from a passe-partout and discreet hunter-killer to a more impressive bodybuilded killing machine

You can find some of his concept arts in the book "Behind the Mask, the secrets of Hollywood monster makers ", Titan Books

So, the deadlines extended to the 15th now?
Well, I guess the comp was bad timing because eatpoo have got jack all for their concepts. Well, I was going to crop my picture because I wouldn't have enough time to finish it, but since its been extended I guess I can have a go at finishing the entire pic then.

Woah there! I didn't know there was this kind of animosity between the two forums.

Is it really this serious?

I'm proud to be a member here, but I've seen lots of conceptorgians posting over there as well.

So what's the story?

My post was just made out of admiration of what ELLioT had made over there(although I'm wondering why that one tile in the floor is black when it should be white...).

I'll watch my mouth in the future...(I have registered there, but not posted yet).

ng: the relation 'tween eatpoo and conceptart is like orcs and dwarves (we being the dwarves of course ;)).
we fight we'ever we can and proud be ye to have joined the right army to fight in.
what you speak of people posting here and over there *points toward eatpoo* is an issue that is unworthy of posting! they are crossbred bastards, trying to take advantage of both sides!
so stand we, our many-notched brushes, pencils and wacom-stylusses in our hand, ready to fell the dogs of the other side...

j/k... nah man... it's not that serious, it's just that the two forums (that both feature great artists, no discussion about that) have that "vs." tag inbetween them since two rounds of thunderdome. it's taken a bit on the funny side of things, though.
eatpoo -> :chug: <- conceptart

(does it shine through that i have read r.a. salvatore books for half the night?)

To be honest I don't think Elliots is all that good.
I mean he just used a Vermeer painting for reference to do the background and the way it is painted is kinda amaeturish. I think your just saying Elliots painting is good Ng because everyone at Eatpoo said so. But, I would oppose your opinion and say that Mcoties piece totally rips Elliots piece apart. Not because I am a Conceptorgian, but because Mcotie is just more a skilfull painter and it looks better and I like it more.
I am not going to brag about my entry either because I am not that type, but judge for yourself :)

John P.
December 30th, 2002, 12:34 AM
He he, no Batteram, I'm not that weak to 'peer pressure'; I liked ELLiOT's piece before they started praising it.

I liked the motive he had used, and that it looked like one of the old paintings.

I'm embarrassed to say that since I'm not educated in art, just have been drawing all my life, I didn't know he had used Vermeer as a reference. :o
(I hadn't looked at his original size image yet when I posted here either)

When knowing that, I'd say that the pieces here are more original indeed. And Mcotie's one is great, no doubt(and I said so when he had just posted it), as is yours(is it all painted btw, or is it photomontage w/painting? Either way it's very good. :))

Thank you gekitsu for the clarification. ;)

I hate this separation of the pix and the discussion about the images sections....it's not handy...

OdinSix:
Generally you should tweak the edges of the shapes...the lines are too bumpy, need some volume...therefore they make the whole part look as if you cut and pasted it...

Think about the screen displays in the background...the graphics on the screens are computergenerated, so you should attend to make the lines not sketch like, but very accurate...this niceties and details decide often on the quality of the image!

You also should lower the focus on unimportant parts like the skirt, this purple metallic door frame (?) on the left etc, to get your focus on the important things...desaturating is one way, especially at this pic :p!

This should be enough at first for the next steps...

About VerMeer, I'd like to add that I did not use just 1 but many pieces as reference. Here they are:

Heh - yeah. :p

I dunno....I guess I meant that the original date was the 1st, the second date I heard was the 15th, "round numbers" in the start and middle of the month.

So I would've though it would be the 20th when they set a new date, since that's a "round number" and is also a Monday(the start of the week).

Ummm.....something like that! :D

Hi to all here, just thought that some of you may not be aware of the fact that Alex Ross completed a series of Terminator artworks for a company known as 'Now Comics'.
The title of the 5 part series was called 'The Burning Earth' and was also combined as a graphic novel { trade paper back)
These were produced around 1990's and are hard to find.

Alex also produced all of the internal art for each comic, and this realy is his early work.
He has a webb site.

I like to see what you guy's here think about his treatment of this subject, although not T3, it has a female Terminator, who looks alot like Sindy Crawford.

Stan Winston was the original concept artist for the Terminator. I remember an interview where he said he designed so that it would fit exactly inside Arnould's body.

The Endoskeleton is a combination of old ideas, Stan Winston
seems to have 'borrowed' Ray Harryhausen's,Jason and the Argonauts skeletons that are impossible to defeat,( i wonder what film also has the same foe like this??)
Add red lights in the eyes and you get close to what must have inspired Stan winston the special effects master.
Now the chromuium treatment i believe is from the old Film /Tv series Battle Star Galactica, the one red eye'd Cylon Warriors dressed in chrome.
Combine the two and you get a Terminator Endoskeleton.

If you have thank any one person for the Terminator, it must be Ray Harryhausen creator of Jason and the Argonauts.

I wanted to introduce myself. I'm the producer of Terminator 3.com, and the featured artist project was my baby. We've been impressed by the work you guys have done here and are jazzed to be presenting Aleksi as a featured artist on our site. His piece was totally kick ass and has proved to be an instant favorite.

I think we will be featuring a few other members of this site in our featured artist section in the near future.

Also note that we are still accepting fan artwork for consideration (icons, desktops, images, flash pieces, & winamp skins), through this url: http://fanart.terminator3.com

Again thanks for you interest and participation. We hope to see more of your work soon. We have lots of good stuff in the pipeline so stay tuned.

Hi,

I'm cabertevon.

" themexican " mention about this "Also note that we are still accepting fan artwork for consideration (icons, desktops, images, flash pieces, & winamp skins), through this url: http://fanart.terminator3.com".

I experience multiple error in uploading my contribution art.

Any tip?

John P.
March 16th, 2003, 06:58 AM
They are having problems with that uploading page.

I haven't submitted fanart per say, but themexican offered me to be in the featured artists section, and I tried to use that page to upload my submission as well. And I couldn't, 'cause I got error messages that weren't applicable to me(for instance it said my file was too big, which it wasn't).

I got it uploaded anyway, but I can't tell you how(I could, but then I'd have to kill you. ;)).

I think you should either send an e-mail to the site and tell them about your problems, or ask the question on the message board over there. It's a known problem, and I'd think they're working to fix it.

When you do get to uploading it, be aware that it might still take some time before it appears on the site, and it may not appear at all, because all submissions are screened first for content and quality.

Good luck. :)
