Spartan Camp #169 - 50 gestures

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 6nd of February.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- No optional study this week!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

Hey Anthis--

Maybe this week could be a "pick your own optional" week? Or not, I just trying to think of ways to make it easy on our fearless leader :)

Hey all,
I am moving to a different place at the moment, so I did not have access to my computer the last few days. Trying to get things up and running again. Since it's so late, this round will simply be without an optional study. I hope that's acceptable... ;) Expect things to be fully operational on monday!
Will throw in some gestures as soon as I can access a scanner!

Wingal - I put a brief explanation 1 post above. Nice hair! Line direction really helps on the form. Also like the 'disney' animal head on the right side, that one's very strong. Note that your approach with the round forms works really well there. Figures are on the small side from the waist down. Also applies to that one horse! Taking some distance every now and then helps with maintaining proportions.

Thought my gestures were getting too artificial, so I went for some quicker, referenced stuff. Tried to focus less on detail and more on the flow and gesture itself. Pen and 2b pencil. I keep 'shortening' figures for some reason. Objective to fix that next...

Anthis: It would be cool if I could focus on details less... I'm bad and slow with figures to begin with, but even if I wish to focus on the flow and the gesture itself without anatomy, those nice curves come into the way...
Maybe I shouldn't use sexy girls as references...

Not much this week.

This week I tried to pay special attention to faces, as per larchist comment last week. Realized I think my noses are causing the problem. It's true, I haven't put as much attention into them as the other parts of the face. So I'm gonna focus on that. Some poses from posemaniacs and a study from a fitness magazine. The rest is from my head. Should be studying more :-/

Anthis- I am really enjoying your dark, focused lines. I think you did a great job with the face studies. No crits here, the "shortening" thing you noticed-- I'd be interested in hearing how you work through it.

shiNIN-- beautiful women, as always. I love your face study, although I think you could go more bold with the highlights, he seems a little flat? I'm not sure.

punkgun-- wow! you really nailed these poses! Welcome to the group! I like how you used varied line thicknesses to imply shape. These are digital, correct? How'd you do the lines?

oops! forgot one. Color and face study from The English Patient.

zy.: I get that sometimes... But my reference has little soft highlights, mugshots of a dark skinned man made in a police department :D I rarely change things when I copy, maybe later, but I would use highlight sparingly on dark skin anyway... But some parts were more darkened in the photo... Whatever, I should practice more and think a bit less - that's an important part too but I tend to do it more than I should and I lose the chance of instinctive playful painting.
In 3/4 view, the nose should stick out more, your faces are different...
The anime/manga style girl in front view: oh the very common eye level correction make the position of eyes assymmetrical. The eyes are too high, the brow/nose distance is two times more than the nose/chin and no matter the angle and the unique proportions of the face, it seems a too big difference (and the face is obviously far from being realistic but it's its style).
English patient: I don't think your reference (it looks like you used a poster) is good for color studies at all, well maybe yes if you don't mean skin coloring but you made the colors different: too pinkish skin, too bright yellow and brown in the background... (some posters on Google has too bright colors as well... and we use different monitors... it doesn't help... but I'm kinda sure the original poster has more balanced (and less saturated) colors that helps to create an atmosphere...)

Thanks shiNIN! Yep, you're right on the noses, that's what I'm trying to work on this week in particular.

Thanks for pointing out the animal/manga eye stuff. I didn't notice, and don't draw in that style generally, so I probably wouldn't have noticed had you not said something.

As for colors, oh my gosh I know! I've been noticing that my colors are wrong when compared to the reference. I've only done a couple of digital color studies, so hopefully practice will help fix my bad choices. Will try to get a study in for next week.

shiNIN - Lot of heads! I think a great way to improve these is to do loads from different directions and try various angles. It's about understanding those shapes in the end. Love the variation in those faces.

punkgun - great work there! love these. I think there's a lot of 'life' in them, on a 30sec timer. Proportions are also strong despite the speed. My only crit is that I think when you use those flow lines trough the spine, or a shape to indicate the pelvis/chest in order to construct a pose, you should make sure these are actually fairly accurate. Some of them are very loose, and don't always seem to help. Nice job! follow up with a couple from imagination to implement what you've learned!

zy. - Not sure, I'll probably do a couple of poses where I try to exaggerate length, or pay extra attention to it. I can make some really strange mistakes when it comes to scaling. Your gestures are getting really nice. I like the bold lines in those posemaniacs figures, and it also seems to have carried over to the gestures after that. The first couple of scans are more as if you are 'holding back'. (could be wrong here, you may have swapped them around for all i know...).
