see, i've got this problem, whenever i do a drawing, it gets smudged all to hell.... i kep my sketchbook in my backpack, which doesn't help the problem, i'm just kinda pissed off that i spend a lot of thought on this one piece of paper, only to have if be a literal shadow of its former self a few days later....

is there i way to prevent this, like a spray type stuff that'll make it not smudge?

i'm new by the way... in case anyone cares

Hi,

Do your spraying outdoors!

The last time I sprayed fixative on a pencil drawing, I did it indoors. For the next few weeks I had the strangest symptoms. My arms and fingers became swollen and stiff and hurt like heck when I tried to drive and turn the steering wheel. Also, I had a peculiar rash all over my body. Can't recall everything now but there were some other symptoms, I think headaches and blurred vision, though I'm not sure of the last one.

It has to be toxic (didn't read the can to find out.. duh!).

A scary experience, and painful to boot!

Oh, and spray in the direction the wind's blowing. ;)

i just bought some, and tried it out, it seems to be working just the way it should, as far as the smelly sketchbook, i tore a page out for this test :D

if u dont like fixative, then put a peice of copy paper between your works... also when u are workin on a peice use that paper to lay your arm on so that it wont be "smudged" while working.

just use HAIRSPRAY, really. it`s cheaper,
probably less toxic, and works better.

i tried hairspray, i didn't work all too well, mabey it's the brand, but it still smudged some, and it made the paper curve and ripple...

If you're really that concerned simply use only a 2H or harder pencil. I used 2H almost exclusively throughout last term's Intro to Sequential class and it never smudges. Then if you really like the pic you can go home and bust out some Bs to darken the shadows etc.

fixative is okay but you can also just buy a sketchbook that has a little bit rougher paper, not smooth-ass copy paper where the graphite just slides off
