ROUND #231:: The Intergalactic Postman
DESCRIPTION
The Intergalactic Postman
The intergalactic postman... His job is to deliver important messages all over the galaxy. The people don't know whether to be happy to see him or beware; not all his messages are of the positive kind. And then there are the people who'd rather not have him deliver certain messages at all and try anything to stop him... The job of this intergalactic postman is adventurous but very dangerous!
Design the intergalactic postman
Can be male or female
Setting is sci-fi
Think of the type of messages he delivers (digital? Personal letters? Political?) and incorporate this in your design
Being a postman is dangerous, so think of ways he can protect himself!
Good luck!

Tawnos I agree, thx for the advice.
This dude is prity notorious all over the universe for getting his messages to people, regardless where and who they are, no matter what the cost. Because of this he is occasionally hired to deliver messages in the form of death to those unlucky enough to be on his list. If you are to ever get a visit of this postman, just pray its a good message because there is no escape.

@ClaretCrab - Very nice! I really like those pants, although rendering them with all those folds might be...interesting? :D
Ok, my take. Not original by a long shot. I`m going for a very retro inspired promotional poster thingy, and hopefully it will match my "Barbarella" ChOW, so I have a nice set of these 2. I predict a lot of fishbowl heads ahead...:P

yeah I knew this would come up eventually ...think I should change it ..but just so you do know, you have to think of his torso being separated in severals parts and as he twists his arm he pushes this part away ..so its basically a thing of his positioning ...but as it seems to be not that obvious at all I think Ill change it
and the thing with the generator on the right side ...its just that I was to lazy to change this part before going to sleep ^^...and naaah I never mind any constructive criticism ...especially not if it is from you

Some seriously cool ideas going on, i love everyones take on this character.
I figured i'd share my thoughts with those askking for feedback-
Taglol Its looking good man, keep pushing it and get that lighting and values nailed, and maybe throw some colour after ;)
Claretcrab I like your drawing style, it works well. At the moment i'm seeing more a paperboy/girl rather than a postman/women. I'm thinking the box thing shes leaning on is suggesting shes waiting to hand stuff out to people, rather than actually travelling to deliver stuff. Keep at it though, I'm lookin forward to seeing this character progress =)
Xerxyz I agree with Partisan, you should go with the robot if that was your idea =D. The design still looks good though, I like the humour of it.
Teundeboer Haha, cool take on the character, I like his pistol. His legs could do with being abit bigger, I think there abit small at the moment, also it could just be me but I think its looking a little flat with the plain background. Perhaps throw in some darker values in the background and show abit more depth in his parcels following him. Part from that its looking prity cool to me ;)
This design isnt exactly screaming postman lol. Should probably give him some more parcels or something...
Still got alot to do, I know alot of the proportions are wrong and stuff. Any thoughts would be much appreciated though.
Teundeboer
February 1st, 2011, 07:06 AM
Parsakoira Love the colors and general concept, made a quick paintover to better show that I think the legs are too long compared to her torso. Think legs are supposed to be 50% of your body length, so I made 2 identical length lines dividing her body in 2 and you can see that the legs are longer than the line.
Uhm, not sure if I explained that right. Do with this comment what u want, it looks great either way. Just thought I'd bring something constructive instead of just saying: "looks great"

shyamshriram Really like the costume design, I think the head is too small tho. And the reference you used had a slightly tilted torso and since your torso in the current picture is not tilted that way I think the way the head attaches to your body is slightly off atm. Doesn't look quite right, but that might be caused by the head being too small. I dno

this one is a fun one. =)
obviously the clockface will be hand drawn, probably spiraling, and the second wheel is likely to be filled with space, galaxies, stars, etc. ....Might do a swap so the bigger wheel is the space one though.

A little more work, zeroing in on done. I always seem to paint things too tall. I keep squishing elements vertically to compensate.
Probably one more night's worth of painting to do, touchup and cleanup.

Oh yeah and the tag line is 'Delivering victory one letter at a time' I found it on some old war poster
Artfix: loving the light and look of this
ShehZ: Nice. I reckon you could push it more into the realms of sci-fi though with a rocket powered scooter. I'm thinking Jetson the mofo up! And remember the brief says his job is dangerous
The Original: I think you can compose this better as the recipient seems to belooking at the postmans robotic crotch. Maybe have him more at eye level. I think it would be cool if the message was projected like R2 does in Starwars Ep4
Tbaldree: nice drama and values
Partisan: nice

A bit more progress. Hopefully I will move away from Ironman, though I kinda like the idea of him looking a bit Buzz Lightyear. Once I start working on the look of it and the paint job hopefully his vocation will be a bit more obvious. I'm thinking wing transfers on the helmet and some kinds bugle emblem

here's my concept, I went with the idea of 50's style Americana, pipe smokin' dads, happy housewives, etc. Typical for me I spent way too much time on the drawing, hope to get painting before ChoW's over :lineart:

Grey: Beautiful line art. The alien housewife is hot! I reckon you could bring the ship a bit closer, even if it intersects the planet. And you'll need to make sure you're showing at least three quarters of the post dude, it's the law! If you change your BG perspective ever so slightly lowering the vanishing point this may help

@Twig I like your concept and the gesture. I like how your postman is actually doing something instead of just carrying something. His job seems important!
@Untouched This is cool! I love how you word this, he takes out threats from long range. Nice gesture here too.
@Steve I dont think I understand your concept but I'm glad you're having fun :P
@TBaldree Nice image here. The tote is swinging a bit too much for my liking. It looks like he might lose it! And since hes not running, it seems like it would be hanging more normally. Also, maybe there should be some fire in front of him and the tote? The path looks cleared ahead of him pretty convienently.
@The Original I like the mood here. The robot is delivering a message of doom?? lol. Make sure that figure is looking up at the robot.
@Artfix Fantastic! No crits for you!
@Shehz Nice composition with the sweeping smoke and diagonal figure. My concern here is that he looks like he's lost his mind? What is the story exactly--try to clarify it with his facial expression. Also, it looks very very dangerous the way he's right in front of the engines like that.
@Geb Hope you get to finish
@FilRam I like the painterly quality of it so far. The box shape of his chest is awkward looking. Is that a slot in it like his chest is a drop-box? If so, this needs more clarification why he has such a strange chest. Maybe some stickers and text or an arrow pointing to the slot?
@Nikola This guy looks so friendly!
@Grey I also thought this alien housewife is hot lol. The postman's head might be just a hair on the small side? I agree--bring the rocket closer. Oh and I don't think you can spend too long on the linework, especially if you use line art in your final images.
Sorry to anyone I missed--I was just doing this last page of people I saw.

Update...
whho21
February 3rd, 2011, 05:54 PM
In the intergalactic age, we don't have letters anymore. Anything that requires transmission can be done in a variety of ways...
Unless... of course, we're talking about some secret stuff. Some secret and important stuff that needs to be hand delivered. And that would be something people would kill for too. Or it could be just a simple message.
In which case, they call in the "Postman".
Postmen get jaded quickly, if they don't get killed first. So our guy has his parcel locked in his parcel locker unit (PLU), which forms part of his armour. Nobody really knows what's in the PLU. To get that pack, they may have to sever the postman right shoulder with it. Oh, if they managed to do that, the pack also carries a detonation device if the wrong combinations are keyed. And if all that wasn't enough, the pack could be empty in the first place....!
This guy travels everywhere. From the dustbowls of desert planets, to the lightless ice planets, and he's required to knock down doors sometimes. He's pretty well armed. But no two postmen are alike in their weapons of choice. In this case, our guy's got a bazooka canon to help knock down difficult doors.

I might crop this to focus more on the mailman and leave the alien and its ship out. Right now it's more a scene than a character concept. I do consider his truck/ship part of the character though.
In my concept, the known Galaxy is so vast that signals take many years to reach their destination. The IGM or IGMS "trucks" however, are able to quickly travel from one sector to the next thanks to their advanced warp tech. Once within the sector, the IGP transmits the messages from his vehicle just outside each planet's orbit and directly into the recipients' computers.
This data transfer is very secure, so the only way to intercept the messages or prevent it from reaching its recipient is to remove it directly from the IGP's computer.

OK, I think I'm about done.
But I'm torn.
Keep it simple, or go with the goofy vintage sci-fi paperback? The whole concept screams hilarious retro sci fi to me. Squishes things down a bit though and I lose some saturation.
Thoughts or any other last-minute crits before I kick it out the door?
Thanks for the crits Artfix! I fiddled it around a bit to compensate on both fronts.

TBaldtree that's awesome lol. Looks done to me. My only crit would be his expression looks on the concerned side. This made sense to me as it stood alone. With the subtitle of your book tho--he should be more...stern...intimidating-looking? Of course the text was just for fun anyway.
Grey, you satisfied me in terms of showing enough figure but I'm not the one you need to convince. I dunno who is!
DragondforLunch My friend said the same thing--that the bag had a leg and a tail lol. There's supposed to be a creature in the bag! I'm not even clever enough to think of a bag with legs and a tail--didnt even cross my mind.

I really need to check into these threads earlier in the week. Postman seems like a nostalgic concept to me, one that seems increasingly archaic in todays world, let alone in the far flung future. But the post still serves a vital purpose, connecting the hardest to reach most remote parts of the country to the rest of us. Places that can't get high speed internet can still get efficiently delivered letters and packages. I've tried to evoke a Norman Rockwell-ish feeling, that sort of 'this happens every day, but its also kind of amazing' tone, these guys have an utterly mundane job description, but have to pilot an incredibly fast but unarmed ship to the most remote occupied territories without built in life support. (ship wide life support was deemed too costly). The title is '5 minutes to launch and now you show up!"
I'm including the first steps, a quick sketch to work out the costume, the rough, some cleaner lines and the first greyscale pass.

After having someone point out to me that my pic was WAY too close to some existing 40k Marine art for my comfort, I scrapped it completely and did an 11th hour repaint in a totally (mostly) different direction.
I tried to have some more overtly mail-related stuff in this one - in the act of actual delivery and with a postage computer mounted to the arm, and a more recognizably delivery-oriented logo, instead of playing on the USPS Eagle.
Tried for more of a Doug Chiang approach to painting it as well, for fun.
Any thoughts?
