hi guys. i was just wondering if the extra features of the intuos are worth it.
for example, can you still get different levels of sensitivity in photoshop with a graphire?
do graphires work well with photoshop and painter?
btw, i do digital art for comicbooks
thanks!

Hi,
The Wacom Graphire tablets have 512 levels of pressure sensitivity and lower resolution than the Wacom Intuos tablets which have 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity and also support Tilt (which the Graphires do not).
Graphires work fine in Painter and I would guess they also work fine in Photoshop.

Hello, i am a 4" X 5" Intuos 2 user. I am extremely happy with it, use it every day. my roomate uses a graphire.
Yeah the Intuos 2 is twice as sensitive...
"Tilt" is the angle at which you hold the pen/stylus. The tilt feature on the intuos enables teh tablet to read the marks when you have the stylus at a low angle. This is one of the many options you can configure yourself once you install teh device.
basically, if a tablet does not read a tilted stylus, then it skips. when the tablet can read the tilt, then you dont have to worry about undoing as many marks.

So a graphire is fine for a starter?? I have to choose between a new graphire 3 or a second handed intuos 1, which are both the same price.

i guess you should think about sort of plug you want... from what i understand... intuos 1 is serial (ps/2) only, and i think graphires come in USB or both... if you wan to use it with a laptop go with graphire...
i would get the new graphire... theyre great for starting out and youl;l know where its been/ how much its been used so it'll have a longer lifspan ...(if wacoms give out eventually.. no clue)
then maybe later if youre really into it you can try to sell the graphire and get something else

My Intuos 1 is a usb model, but you should make sure before you get it. I don't think you can "hot-swap" with a serial plug like you can with a usb. Also, the serial version needs you to plug it into a power outlet, while the usb version gets all its juice from the usb port. I think the usb models have a "U" at the end of the model number, but not sure about that.
Tilt is actually more than that, it detects what angle you are holding the pen, and lets you use this for drawing. In photoshop you can assign pen tilt to something like width or direction, and use it kinda like a pencil, ie. using the point for fine lines or the side for broad strokes. Or like a flathead paintbrush even. I don't know if Painter supports this, but I'm guessing that it does.
