ROUND #230 :: Rangda the Demonqueen
DESCRIPTION
Rangda the Demonqueen
Rangda is the demonqueen of Bali. She has a flaming tongue and rolling eyes, and even eats children! If that’s not evil enough, she leads an army of evil witches to fight everything that’s good. It is said the origin of the myth of Rangda dates back to the 11th century, to the Javan queen Mahendradatta. Mahendradatta was accused of witchcraft and was exiled by the king. She returned however, and took her revenge by slaying half of the kingdom through the plague.

There are some interesting rituals and depictions connected to Rangda, so make sure you do some research for this design!

So first I was like "Yay, a hot demon chick! Woohoo! :cheerleader: "
And then I read the description and was like "Aww, she`s old and pruney...:sadcheerleader: "
And then I was like " Hey...saggy boobs!" So I`m back to "Yay!:cheerleader: " again!
Quick sketch...and something I noticed. Old witch/hag who`s all scary and eats children/babies....kinda reminds me of this one (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2145392&postcount=146) ...weird how some archetypes exist in independent cultures...:)
Edit - wee bit of rendering and a color test...this one might turn out to be more complicated than I thought...fun!
Edit2 - Decided to actually FOLLOW the task and DESIGN the character. May not "fly" with people, but it`s so easy to fall into that "OMG must make an awesome illustration" trap. This one is all about Rangda. For better or worse :P
Edit3 - Done...ish. Tomorrow - weapon and some more work on the final. Time management FTW!

GEB: Nice progress. Watch out for going too bright too early on, and the same for the darks. You won't have any values to work with when you start your colouring. Trust me, I make that mistake all the time :p You might want to add a multiplied (light)grey layer on top of it to give yourself some headroom again :)

Same archetype as the Hopi's ogre woman. eats children, long tongue, leader of the ogres...
Soyuk Wuhti "Ogre Woman" Kachina doll by Gerald Quotskuyva (Hopi) pictured below.
Because Rangda is associated with Durga, it is interesting that she is fighting the lion-dragon, whereas in India it is her mount. I am of the opinion the Rangda-Barong dance is properly classified as a lila, tantrically speaking.

I guess you're only gunna get so much variety when we're all trying to portray a deity that has three main colours, constant bed hair, mouth like a bombed out graveyard and has to be visually recognisable to have any chance of winning the competition ;)

I thought that, you said it gehe.
empyrean: bulgy evil spider eyes, gnarly crooked teeth and fangs, horns, 6 boobs, batwings, blood, giant snake tongue, dragon claws... etc. :p
Do a wikipedia search on demons or look at how other people have portrayed demons in the past? It's not that hard to think of something :)
Eofn
January 25th, 2011, 06:21 AM
.empyrean. She's defiantly starting to take shape. As far as making her look more like a demon, if really depends on what sort of style your aiming for. Personally I would start with defining more of her face as that is more the likely going to be the focal point of this character. An easy start would be to sketch in some visible fangs or tusks, which will straight away give you an interesting mouth shape. Also think about the nose, it's unlikely that she would have a small, 'normal' looking nose to play around with extremes; the Bali masks use a flatter, pig-like nose but you could also try a longer 'hag' nose. With the eyes experiment with different levels of bulging, or if you want smaller eyes, you could make them more demon-y by having them without any pupil or iris. As another suggestion (I'm not sure what you're thoughts are as this is still an early wip :P) with the shape that her hair is, you may want to consider putting a crown on her head in the style that Bali dancers wear but decorate it with sculls, bones and other nasty parafonalia.

Sorry if this wasn't the type of advice you were looking for, but I hope it helps.

lots of nice filth and disturbing stuff going on. I dig.
This seems like a pretty disturbing character bio. This crazy old Lady eats kids, which is awesome!... in a really disturbing and socially unaccepted way. I really like the flaming tongue and built on the idea of a core of fire that extended to her fingernails and elsewhere. I tried to stay away from the literal representation of the mask, but really liked the tusks and crazy hair. More to do, but a brief pause in the action for show and tell. Poor kid.

There's always one killer shark of an artist in these weeklies....I don't do them much but I'm quite fond of the DSG, so I would run into this one guy every day for weeks a couple years back that would always knock it out of the water. It was like despair incarnate trying to top him - and you shouldn't try to do that, it's just a distraction. Remember, you can always beat yourself
And it's a ways off to the deadline....

So much awesomeness. For all the worriers, remember that this is about your artistic journey, not someone else's. Things get easier with practice.
I got some rough color now. No eating of babies because everybody else seems to have that down pat, but I did add a nice entrail necklace. I just couldn't help but go more traditional style, even if it is boring.

i kind of like the more recognizable elements actually. i mean Rangda herself isn't exactly run of the mill common...she's in a pretty strange category of esoterica: dark mothers, and off in a corner overshadowed by Kali, Bhagalamukhi and Lilith....

I thought mine looked decent at first, But yea, when I saw some of you're work, guys, I realized that once again, I got ahead of myself coloring, didn't think about light source much. So, I painted up the greyscale and then started adjusting and re-doing the colors.. I think it def. looks better now. Everything is a bit grayed out still, but I'm out of time for today, and have to keep working tomorrow :D

Kitty: hmm well you asked for opinions so here is mine:
I think the tropical colors are apropos, and they are appealing considering her origins and the jungle setting it works fine, the pose is good she looks like a 'creeper' and definately have the pendulous breast action going on. The face is a bit animal like atm, and wide and meaty, as if she just creeped into a window in Wallace and Grommit's house. I'm a little concerned about the area above her head. you've already begun rendering color and value and havn't decided what to do there. it makes for a lot of work if you have to accomodate newly added sketchwork
Lighting is a bit indistinct....we seem to be having conflicting sources, one about on her upper arm and another coming from the right side.
As for her toes im going to assume they are wherever the top of her head is atm
with those colors you may have to do a colorful headress of venus flytraps eating babies or something else jungle-sinister
her left nostril cant seem to decide where it's going, is it part of the tip or is it on the side.....
i would work out the drawing first before you continue to fix the lighting and color

Great, I finally found the complete Barong and Rangda dance. In the beginning the girl and the guy are fighting, so she has already turned into a bird here, and gets defeated, then she turns into Rangda, so he turns into Barong to defeat her, and he still can't, so some helpers come in, and then they defeat her, but then kill themselves. ahahaha

Have changed her right hand trying to make it more threatening. Also experimenting with lights inside the skulls. The light and reflections aren't right yet, but I wanted to get some colour contrast in there. Is it overkill?
Mr Man
January 27th, 2011, 09:27 AM
GEB I don't think the skulls need to be too contrasty as it forces my eyes away from the characters face, you could desaturated them a bit and add colour to rangdas eyes instead perhaps?

GEB:: I semi agree with Mr Man. if you are going to have them glowing the rim light on the kid should be greater. I love this illustration, and I hope you do well in the polls. You might want to play with colors of the skull light, since it is orange it is in complete contrast with the rest of the piece. if it was a cooler color you wouldn't draw the eye away from the face to the chest. maybe if the baby was a warmer grey it would separate the two figures and the cool rim light could bring them together. Cold being evil and the warm being an innocent child, thats fun.
just my two cents. i think it looks very close to finish. possible motion blur on the bg moving toward the center of the top of the piece. :rocker:

Nice work everyone!!
GEB I like the way yours is coming along, it has a strong gollum feel to it!
Elixy I think things are still looking a bit muddy in your piece, and I think it's from too much of the background showing through. I'm thinkin you should either make the colors even a little stronger, or select out your character and try some different values and colors in the background.
I didn't know what to paint today so I figured I check out what's going down in the Chow, here's a sketch for now. I know it's super cliche looks pretty similar to everyone elses designs...it's a fun subject to paint anyway. On to colors next.

Is this better?.. or worse? :S
PxelSlayer
January 27th, 2011, 03:21 PM
Jasper...nice kankles...<3
Elixy - first things first - are you going for a a.) illustration or a b.)plain picture of the character on a simple background?
If a.) then (gosh, like I`m writing something in C++ :P) make sure you have the colors of the background reflecting on the character (that`s the beauty/curse of colors - they bounce off everywhere!), and if b.) then 1.) get rid of the white background (it can be very harsh on the eye and make color picking more difficult - pick a nice, neutral, muted tone. Way better, trust me) and 2.) make yourself a nice, simple palette ( lights, midtones, shadows), arm yourself with references, tons of patience and some coffee/beer/poison of choice and dig in! Also - a nice way to keep track of your values is to add a hue/saturation adjustment layer on top of all your layers (in PS : Layer-> New adjustment layer-> hue/saturation, and then set the saturation of that layer to -100). You can turn it on/make it visible any time you want to check out your images values in gray scale. Very nifty, very practical.
Also, don`t forget layer modes as well (overlay is your friend, and so is soft light, and multiply sometimes, and vivid/linear light if you`re very careful), as they create some really nice effects. And lastly - play with brushes and textures. There`s a bunch of brushes you can d/l online that aren`t magic, but are fun to use and experiment with.

Pxel Thank you so much ^_^ I've been doing all the things you've pointed out, especially with the layers. Didn't know about the hue/sat layer though, very useful indeed ^_^ I think more than anything I've been trying so hard to draw like other people, I've forgotten the basics :S
I think I'm going to go back and try again keeping in mind everything you've just said. I'm determined not to give up on this. Every now and then I think 'this is useless and too hard, I give up' then that makes me think, 'no this is perfect, ChoW isn't supposed to be in your comfort zone' and I pick up my pen again and give it another shot.

its a bloody mess out there! Aghghh .. I still don't know if I actually want to illustrate a kiddo getting eaten.. seeing as I have a little boy.. I dunno.. I think I'll do some parts?
anyway, for some unknown reason I woke up at 2 thismorning and couldn't sleep.. sooo, I started working on this some more!
This is the farthest I've gone in completing a picture.. in.. 3 years I think? Hurray for CHOW! ...
(yes, I am using the star brush do paint my scenery. I'm weird, ok??)
pxelslayer: I really like your design, I'm not sure about all the paint on the face, it flattens her out a little, but I really like what you're going for!
GEB: you're going to give me nightmares dude.. that is some scaaary sh*t! In a good way of course. she just looks too freakin real!!

Artfix Whoa CREEPY head! I would not want to run into that thing.. *shudder*
JanJager: Love the movement going on there, you going for more of the black magic angle? The messed up hands/arms waving behind her really make it special for me.. (sorry I'm a cheeseball today)
Mr.Man, I like the shapes, but I agree, waaayyy too much color.. I know it's the base, but ya know.. its a little bright..
Partisian: I like the little baby souls, that's a nice way to handle the issue, I think the whole picture has a nice bit of movement to it, I can imagine all the smoke/mist swirling around her.. The colors work really well, and I dig her skirt thing. . I want one just like it. you know, for when im a demon queen >_>
Jasper: Awesome start! She gives me the creeps, and she's nice and old looking
PixelTuner: I can't wait to see her finished, really like your design and colors, I agree with the others though, she comes off as a little young thanks to the perky boobs

Hi there,
I can see that some great stuff are in progress for this week challenge. The topic is interesting and the character's characteristic are quite numerous and easy to grasp. So I trust this week's challenge will turn out better that the previous one. I entered into my first Chow last week and I think I am gonna get hooked on it. I have to remember for this one to be more organized and not to rush so much... .
Anyway I am still working on my sketches, I am currently writing from my work station (Yep, I sketch during my working hours...and Nop, my job doesn't involve anything about Art).
I will upload them later today.
GEB : I really like your compo with the low angle shot. Very dark and creepy...exactly like I ordered!
Kitty: The posture of your character is very interesting, I can sense how silent she would move. I also find that it is quite difficult to define where the light is coming from in your image. Might be due to the very dark BG. It seems that the light source(s) of the entire pic doesn't/don't connect between the BG and FG. Also, the blood on the character is way too sketchy . I do not think that blood would reflect light so much on skin (might be wrong, haven't had my body covered with blood so far)...What would have looked different is covering the entire forearms with a medium range saturated red for example and work out the highlights. Blood would dry quickly outdoor (if you're not the injured) and wouldn't be so bright unless over exposed and again...depends on the complexion of the character and how fresh was the kill. hope I made some sense.... mind you...I am still working on understanding light so bear with me!
JASPER: Ah,ah......Really good start man! I like the deformed face and your brush strokes...(love the strokes...Can you teach me?). I wished that she wasn't standing so still. I think there is quite a good story behind the origin/culture of this character and having her standing stiffly is like one opportunity missed....I dunno if you have design the torso so elongated intentionally but I also find her legs a bit too short and too much like pillars.
JanJAGER : Promising and confident. You opted for the ritual dancing illustration...Will a new baby born be offered to her for diner...I mean sacrifice?
ArtFIX : I like your composition so far, the lurking way of moving is also conveyed here, but with a twist, something is catching her attention. are you going to push this idea a bit more?
Will you keep all her extra members? (extra arms/legs) or is it just experimental process? I am looking forward to seeing more...
UNtouched24: Cool design. I like the colour tone of your picture. I just find the highlight on top of her breast a bit distracting (if she wasn't an old wrinkly granny with saggy boobs, I wouldn't normally mind it so much)...more seriously, I think the shape of her breast creates a awkward "cross shape" because of the shadows and highlights . Maybe you could add some accessories (like a necklace, scarf, ....) to reduce it or may be reshape the breast.
PARTISAN: Cool colour palette and great attention for the dress. The design of the dagger also add another feature to the character. I think you should check the symmetry of her face. Half (from forehead to the bottom of the nose) is more foreshortened than the other. As the face is what I think a very important focal point for this type of character, it is fare to get it at least symmetrical.
SGOODSON: I don't know if it was intentional or not....but, you seem to have spent quite a lot of attention on the belt and less on the face of the demon queen...I know it is still a WIP and it would be great to se you pushing a bit more this area of the character. Also her left hand which hold the weapon should be subject to some attention as well, it is a bit too shadowed. To finish, the idea about the swarm of flies is great. If you wanted to convey that the flies coming out of her hair I still think the hair should be more stylised than now. Just think about hair being blown forward/side. more mid tone/highlights would be needed.
Ok I think I should get started on my ChOW or I will end up with another weekly desapointment!!
GEB
January 28th, 2011, 11:00 AM
Kitty: Don't forget the shadow! She looks huuuuuuge too. But then she is a demon queen so I guess she can be big or small. I think it would help you a lot it you define a very strong dramatic light source that way it's easier to ensure your character and environment stick to it and then add in bounce or rim light to define details in the shade.
Patram: Thanks oodles! Self belief meter just went up several points!

@KittyKaida: Really dynamic pose, I like that! And I like you included a background. Maybe make sure the figure stands out more in the final? Maybe you can play arround a bit with saturation or adding another light source for more dramatic light and shadows.
@GEB: This is just awesome. It motivates me so much to learn how to do grayscales and colour it later. I love it! :)
@sony: Interesting idea to make her arm burn... But watch out for the proportions, to me it looks like it´s a little too long. I like her mask though. :)
@electric goat: I like that a lot. Very classic character design pose, the concept is very easy to read. I like that mouth element you chose, makes her look dangerous. So cool!

@KittyKaida I think the lighting is improved and the contrast on my monitor is fine. I was going for the distant moonlight too, but it's tough to find good refs for. Maybe turn down the saturation just a bit. Think of silvery moonlit landscapes.
Personally, I feel you need a bit more definition. It always seems like line work is rather unpopular around here, but I though your original drawing was pretty sound. It seemed to lose something when you painted over it. It might help if you added a bit more definition around the edges of your figure.
Now I'm very full of beer and very sleepy. More (hopefully) crits tomorrow!

Bnoch: I like your overall design, one of the best definitely! But in your first three roughs, the two greys and a colour one, i feel her face is a lot more disturbing. I love how she looks old and in the same time looks like a baby, i guess that's what make it more disturbong.
Naomi: Love the decorative/storytelling approach. I might try it myself for my next character design :)
electric_goat: love it! nice touch there on her elbows :D
Thole: Classic horror piece! I dig.
SGoodson: Love the flies as hair idea... i imagined how menacing she'd sound when shes approaching :). Watch her belly down though, I kinda am not sure of how it's being full frontal like that.
Mitze: Yeah wings and tails might be too much. I like the flame background, btw... it's kinda relevant to the cultural fact that Balinese fight evil with fire. My only concern is the composition, the right part of the image seems empty, but to crop it and cut the right horn will sacrifice the informational aspect. Hope you can figure that out :)
Jefita: Looks cool. I like how it flows :)
GEB: Very chilling. Niice! I like the latest development :)
Jasper: Liking how you start. I really like the effect that the long hands and the tilted staring head give. Inhuman! :D
JanJager: Loving how she looks like she's dancing (and her jingling boobies :D). It emphasizes the witchcraft/ritual aspect of her. Like the rythm man detail there in the bottom left corner.
Wroom: I like it. Especially the left pose.
Partisan: Nice concept. I kinda see a head in that "soul" cloud.
Artfix: Very menacing. The confusion you produce gives the creep. Which is good :)
Untouched: I think there's still something more you can do to it to improve it. Like sharpening the details, except if you want it blurry like that, or a tattoo on her body, or enhancing her body parts (like GEB said), or whatever you can think of. I mean there's still time, right? :)
Mr Man: Oof... Colors! but I think it could work with the right trick. Eager to see more! :)
Kitty: Looks good on my monitor. The layers of mist serve good to the, ... well, mystery aspect :teeth: About your monitors problem, have you seen this online LCD monitor calibration (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/) method? Perhaps it can solve your problem, if you use LCD monitors that is :)
Manon: Aaah... I like it! Really dig your concept. Hoping to see more! :)
fdisk: That ready-for-war concept is good! I like how you translate the stripes into metal rings :)
blackrobin: You're going with Balinese Dancer in your approach? Nice! You know how the movements in the dance itself, though not intended to mimic Rangda, but a good spirits, is looking unreal. Especially how their eyes (the dancers') roll. You put a good twist on that :)
Well, I hope those can be of help to you guys as it (writing it) does good to me. If I missed anyone, just ask :)
Now as for myself, I'll get into colouring tonight
Nice job and good luck everyone :)
EDIT: kissorkill's picture just loaded: She looks aggressive especially with those piercing claws. But I think the colours are too dark and uniform there, brighten it up a bit. I know it's a horror piece, but definitions are not unimportant :) and maybe you could tweak the hue of her hair, for example, if you don't to make it white, being the same green as her body is a bit connfusing :)

Let's see if I can get a little bit further this week! She was supposed to be picking her teeth having just consumed the babe in whose bed she is resting. It was supposed to be the babies nappy/diaper hanging around her toe and I was going to add a few more toys etc. I realise though that it looks as though it is her pants she is swinging around and giving a 'come hither' look. Still, it made me laugh so here ya go. I might keep at it.

MrsL Haha like your concept man, I agree though that the diaper maybe shouldn't be around her toe. I like her tongue.
Paolo13 Decent sketch for now man
SGoodson Dig the design, I think I'm getting a little lost though. You can probably still push a focal point a little moer.
JanJager Love the pose and colors, keep at it!
blackrobin I like your sketch so far, her right hand is looking a bit awkward for me.
fdisk I like it a lot, a very traditional design that sets it apart from most of the entries.
kissorkill Haha I love her tit folding back on her knee.
ArtByManon Like your drawing a lot, keep it up!
KittyKaida I like the pose a lot. I think I'm getting a little too much of the color dodge effect though. I know it's late, but for next time I'd recommend keeping the layer types simple (maybe just a color layer or two) and just work on normal layers focusing on your actual painting/drawing.
Katanasoul Colors are looking cool, as you progress keep in mind the lighting should be consistent on the background with the figure.
witcrack Awesome drawing, dig the fingernails. Looking forward to seeing the finished!
electric goat I like your entry a lot man, nice clean style.
sony Haha nice flaming arm. Not sure how I feel about the forms in general, they may need a little more modeling yet.
GEB Turned out great man, nice entry!!
Sorry if I didn't get to you, just went down this page.
Ok, just finished mine up. Lots of fun with this.

Jasper: Thanks for the feedback, I love the design! The decomposing heads are a nice touch and I like that the face is somewhat blurred, reminds me of something like "The Rings"
Great choice of colors too, nice clean design; I enjoyed your WIP as well.

@Witcrack yeah, that is just the only salvageable WIP I had at the time. I am planning on changing her hair and giving it some major textures.

Jasper - love the freakish long arms... they look like they'd be good at ripping babies apart. *Shudder*

Very cool work out here! Been spending a hell of a time trying to work on my values. I still have so much to do until the deadline. Hopefully I will get a chance to leave some comments later when I get near the end.

hmmmmm does somebody thinks one might get banned for setting up a new thread in the CHoW forum named " Character of the day - the woman/man that has only one day to live" ....? >,>
if not ...that would be the natal hour of the famous CHoD ....*giggles*

Well I couldn't make it on time for the poll because of imperatives, so I've posted my CHOW in here.... Anyway, it isn't like we didn't have an extension on the deadline either! ;
