This is a painting in acrylic i did of my friends that are part of the vampyre asylum. The characters are done in Acrylic and the background is done using water colors. I did this on Masanite board cuz i hate canvas..The picture is 5 ft by 3 ft...

This picture i did while using a new tactic known as absent minded...my only goal was to depict depression in a pure yet simple form....its kinda abstract....lol...

Dear Mr. Asylum,
Have you ever tried to scan in your images and color them on the computer using one of the many illustration software options such as painter?
This would be a quick and easy way to experiment with color and tonal changes as well as directional lighting and shadow, which, by the way you really need to work on.
The motion of your figures and the dramatic poses are nice and fairly descriptive about their character.
As far as the depression drawing, it is very first year gothic art student. How about pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and giving youself something to smile about, like a lot of work.
Please post four finished drawings in this forum by next week.
Thank you,

even though yardstick takes the "goober of the week" award for his crappy bedside manner, he is more or less right about your technical skills. I would also suggest you try the anime-style image of your friends again to learn more, but this time work on a smaller scale. Also take photos of your friends in these poses (it doesn't matter if they look nothing like their character--do it for the anatomy and the lighting effects).
Don't take his comments about the depression pic to heart. You're working with a non-narrative interpretation of an emotion; it's not easy to do. Developing your own personal style is a process that will take a good chunk of time.
Keep at it!

Hey the family portrait is awsome. Its one of those that the more you look at it the more you see. I do agree though, the darker shades would add some depth and make it more of a 3-D atmosphere.
Not sure what to say on the depression pic. Everyone has there own form of depression and ways of expressing it, I think your way shows all sides of depression in its truest form for you, and possibly for others as well.
great job allround. Hope to see more!

Vampire, sometimes I do think that some things are just too hard to express with an immage, for me, it is love, i always wanted to make a painting about love, but i never have been able to, because it is one of those things that you can not express with paint.(something to think about) Mabe you could find a way to simplify the immages, i see at least 5 different compositions in both of your immages. I think that whenever an artist puts themselves into their artwork with deep feelings, it is a wonderful thing, so good job.

ok first of thank you guys i had alot of fun reading the replies...as stated before i do believe that the darker shades would help the first painting so thank you for the crit i appreciate it.....the depression pic is NOT MY DEPression though i believe that everyone including me in the past have been depressed...im mad i was called first year goth student LOL...Yardstick is my teacher for the class that told me to put my work here...she is cool so dont think she is shooting me in the head or anything....it is hard to depict something that has no form and no description other than pure emotion...its just something that i thought i would try......my real style is the american anime type style which is in my new post....i am more advanced in that style i would think...but also the statement about using art programs....i would love to if i didn't have to worry about having rent and buying dumb shit for fine arts classes (other than the drawing class of course :) LMAO)....i am not ready to devote my life to sitting in an art building with computers that dont even work and i can see a macintosh staring at me right now and that is a really big peeve of mine...but anyway...i am trying to get a copy of photoshop and painter 6 from my friend right now...thanks everyone for the crit i enjoyed it....my other post is more of my style so i hope you enjoy that one as well

Vampyre,
I do agree with all the post about broading your tonal range. Also, every inch of your work is important, you need to treat it as such.
If the work calls for breathing room, then let it have some. You don't have to fill the void with random not as important images.
