I use it all the time.
Depend what medium you use.
Here is a tip: for pencils or charcoal on paper use just ordinary cheep hairspray.
Yes, hairspray. Works like a charm, will protect and you would be surprised how many professionals are using it.

to lean on proably, stops your hand smudging it.
And yeah, fixative's a good idea. Most of my sketchbooks have the back of the opposite side and blurred images in them caause it's smudged as time went on. And yes, hairspray works fine

yep,, you gotta use the "workable" fixative.
just use it lightly because it can still smudge when used in excess..

i use it when i do things with charcoal..
i don't really mind the little msudginess i get in my sketchbook unless it is something i really like..
about workable fixative though. i bought a can that so didn't work at all and i was very anoyed.. then another can i had went berserk and started leaking.. and .. well, who minds adventure anyway.. ;D

Haha, for a moment I thought this said "how do u combat smuggling ? or do u just put up with it".
I don't use fixative. I like the smudges.

For pencils, I usually place a clean piece of paper under my hand over the rendered area to prevent smudging and use workable fixative lightly along the way.

i meant more along the lines of after u have finished a sketch and u dont want it smudging when u carry the book around.. i just never use more that 2b pencil. i have a syndrome where by i have be able to go back and change a sketch if i need to. i spose thats where workable fixiative comes into it
