View Full Version : Concept art sketchbook project 2

Well it seems that the first sketchbook has disappeared into oblivion. So if there is enough interest in this idea still, I'd like to start a new one, and handle it slightly differently. Here's what I propose:

1. Same general idea as the first time around, where a sketchbook will be mailed from one person to another.

2. I'll purchase the book, based on recommendations from you guys. I usually buy cheap crappy books since I tend to go through them quickly, but for this I'd like to get a good-quality, durable book. Any suggestions?

3. This book will only be sent to 12 people at most, and will remain in the U.S. I've decided on this for the sake of simplicity. If things go well and the book actually makes it all the way through the list, I'll gladly start another book that will go international. But after the way the first book has gone, I'd like to keep it simple and just see if we can get one book to go through a short list of participants.

4. If you want to participate, let me know QUICKLY. I'm only going to send this book to about 12 people, so it will hopefully get back here fairly quickly. As I mentioned about doing a second international book, I would also like to do a book that goes to a longer list of people... but again, let's keep it short and simple for this one and see how it goes.

5. I've already got a website built (the one that was supposed to be used for the first one) and a domain name (conceptsketchbook.com) and this time around I own the domain and will be able to make frequent updates to the site.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

If you want in, e-mail me NOW (mike@roboticblue.com). Once I get 12 people, that's it.

To be included, I must receive your name, mailing address, conceptart.org name, and (if you're willing to give it) a phone number. I'm requesting phone numbers so that if you have the book too long I can make threatening phone calls :) Seriously, I think having phone numbers would make it less likely that the book will disappear. But it's not required.. just requested.

So e-mail me if you want in, and post suggestions for the type/brand/style of book we should use here.

The first one never got sent on to the next person, and now it's basically gone. Maybe it will surface eventually, but rather than waiting I figured I'd just start a new book.

More info...

Since there will be a smaller number of people participating in this project, everyone will be invited to use a few pages in the book. I'm not sure exactly how many (will depend on the type of book we get and the total number of pages in the book), but I would guess that each person could use 3-5 pages if they wanted to.

The new website domain is now functional. The site is conceptsketchbook.com

If I write "I told you so", will it get me a pipebomb parcel ? :) Just teasing.. I hope this Sketchbook finds it way around the world without any problem and that you all make beautiful art.

Are... you... home.. alone..?[/BREATHING DEEPLY INTO PHONE]

:D

I only ask for the phone numbers to try and keep people from just getting the book and "forgetting" to send it on.

I think it's fair.. I'll put you on the list to get the book if you give me a number I can reach you at if the book goes missing after being sent to you.

But, if the phone number thing is the reason few people are signing up, then I'm willing to give in on it.

[B]Phone numbers are no longer required, but I'd still appreciate having them if you were willing to give one.

Now sign up dammit! :)

What's a good quality sketchbook to use for this? Can anyone suggest a brand or type? I usually get those fairly cheap black hard-cover ones or whatever cheap spiral-bound book is available, but for this we should get something decent that will stand up well to the handling and transit.

UPDATE

1. The book will be purchased on Wednesday or Thursday (depends on how long I get stuck at work on Wednesday) and will be sent out within a day of purchase. We don't have a complete list yet of people participating in the project, but we've got a good start, so I figured we might as well get things underway.

First stop is Virginia where the book will be drawn in by Metaphysics and most likely TheBlasianOne and Metalwinds (not yet confirmed). Second stop will likely be Washington where Jetpack42 will get a crack at it.

2. I will be purchasing a good-quality book that is suitable for a variety of media. However it will be up to you to protect/treat your work once it is finished, both to keep your work intact as well as to keep your medium from rubbing off onto other pages.

3. As mentioned above, we don't have a complete list yet. If you'd like to participate, e-mail me at mike@roboticblue.com.

Hadn't planned on drawing in it first... but I might.

And I'll let you guys know about the page count once I get the book and see what the total available is.

Bought the book today, and I'm already drawing in it. :D

It's a Cachet Classic Sketch Book, 75lb. drawing paper, 9x12, 75 page book. I looked at tons of books and decided on this one because it seems to work well with a variety of media. There was a 90lb all media book that looked tempting, but it had a watercolor-type of paper in it, and I didn't know if anyone would be bothered by that. So I went with this drawing paper book. Markers do bleed through, so if you're going to use any liquid media be sure to protect the page underneath the one you're working on.

The page count is 75 (as in 75 sheets of paper). The limit per-person is going to be 2 pages, front and back of each.

One more thing... When you get the book, please scan and send in your work so I can post it on the website. Also, feel free to send in photos like the one above showing the book in the various places it will be traveling to. Just be careful with it! :)

Here's what I added to the book:

This is a weird one. Not sure where I was going with this, but it ended up looking like a female Unibomber.

I've added some images to the website (http://www.conceptsketchbook.com), and I'm still working on the order people will be getting the book in. All I know at this point is that the book is off to Virginia on Tuesday.

List update...

I've updated the list of people getting the book. Scroll up towards the top of this page to see it or just check the list on the website (http://www.conceptsketchbook.com).

ATTENTION WASHINGTON PEOPLE

As you can see on the list, alot of you are pretty close to each other. I've arranged the order from south to north. If you want to arrange to pass the book on by meeting up in person, feel free to do so. It's totally up to you. I will continue to send the address of the next person in line to the person who currently has the book, and from there it is up to you how you go about getting the book to that person.

A NOTE ON SENDING THE BOOK

Please pack the book securely when shipping it to the next person. I sent it out in a box and the book was packed inside with bubble wrap. We can reuse the box and the wrap, but if you notice that this stuff is getting worn out, please replace them. Thanks..

EDIT: The list is now full.

The attention washington is getting in this thread makes me want to start a gang. All we need is a few people and some moderately used "turf" to fight over...

Whos with me?

Just got word from Metaphysiks that the book is still in Virginia. Final projects and exams have held up the Richmond guys, but the book should be back on track soon.

And they assure us that their work will be top notch. :)

i just noticed that helix is in clifton hah, i coulda gotten it second instead of last :(
no wrries this way i get to see the all the great art in the book
so it works out better this way

srry to throw out this idea now since the books going the rounds already, but what do u guys think of having one page where we all contribute, kinda like a melting pot of all our art
its only one page so it shouldnt be hard to incorporate.
what do u guys think?

Actually I did notice that you were close to where I am, but I had already planned to get the book to Metaphysiks first, so I figured you'd get it right before it comes back to me. Sorry about that.. it just seemed like the best way of handling things.

I love this idea, someone should start a Europe one as well. Or can you make the next world wide? That would be legendary.

helix7
June 13th, 2004, 04:54 PM
Well the idea for this one was to keep it in the US and keep it on a short list. This was done with the intention of keeping things really reallt simple and quick, to see if it really is possible to get a book to make a complete trip. Assuming this works, future books would be world-wide.

At the moment we are not taking any other names for the list. Really we're just hoping that the book turns up somewhere so we can continue the list we already have. Anyone seen the damn thing?

still waiting in seattle

helix7
July 8th, 2004, 09:30 PM
Well it looks like the book is gone. If somehow it does surface, I'll post here and let everyone know, but at this point it looks like the project is officially a failure.

(Chris: Check your e-mail.. let me know if there is still any chance of tracking it).

Since this is the second time this has been tried and its also the second time that a book hasn't gone far before disappearing, I think it's safe to say that this will probably never work. I have no plans on starting another book, but if anyone else wants to organize a third attempt, feel free. I'll even post stuff on the website if you're interested.

Thanks everyone for taking an interest in this.
