Spartan Camp #166 - 50 gestures + Optional "Film Sequence Study"
The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 16nd of January.
- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!
- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an "Film Sequence Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:
I will clarify this, as the title may seem a little vague. I could not come up with a more accurate header. Find yourself a suitable part of a video/film/animation. Make sure you have a person/figure acting and moving. Draw frames of the sequence in order to study the motion, movement, body language, or anything else that is of interest. A couple of shots will do, try to capture what's happening. You could take any movie, sports video, video clips are great reference too. Same goes for good animations/anime.
You'll need reference for this one! Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Have fun! And feel free to ask questions!
50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.
Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!
Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

This is my first time... I hope i'm doing it right ^_^"
I took a few short clips from the RHCP video "by the way", and tried to draw pose by pose. (it's really hard to stop a youtube video several times per second...)
If the file is too long, please say so. (i'll reduce it to a link)

This one sounds hard! I might make my 50 gestures the animation sequence. If I have the patience for it... Looking forward to see everyone's stuff!

Cool, Sounds like fun! I'll try to make it this time.. and thats a great idea J@n!t :)
@YUZworks : Hey, yep, keep going! and i guess you could cut nd layout your drawings side by side b4 uploading, if you think its too long a post.. You don't have to work on getting the details down first, even stick figures can be gesture drawings.. I thought how you used shadows to define the person was a good idea.. I'm no expert at critiques, but you'll get plenty by the end of each camp :D Keep drawing! the week is young..

Vertical Nice studies :)
I've not done any for a while, new years resolution is to try and do some every day, I'll see how long I can sustain that :D

Vertical: You are putting good "life" into your gestures. I checked out your sketchbook and see that this is something you have cultivated yourself. Nice work :)

Here's my first page: I chose an old Tom and Jerry clip, that was my favorite cartoon when I was a kid. I've never examined animation before and I'm getting a big kick out of how they did it. The clip is highly compressed and might be fuzzy for other reasons, but that reminds me to FORGET about the detail. It's still hard. Will keep on with this, it's a lot of fun.

Thanks Angel and J@n!t! Nice work yourselves. And Angel, have you tried using pixelovely's gesture tool instead of posemaniacs? it has the same function, but with real people. here it be. (http://pixelovely.com/tools/gesture.html) Good luck with your resolution!
I guess I'm done for now. A bunch of 1 min animals, then some imagination stuff, then some more rendered stuff, then some poses with Pitt pens. Not totally happy with the last one. I definitely want to do the film study, but it might have to wait until Sunday.

Vertical Thanks for much for that link, it's nice to draw some different poses and not have to imagine skin on the models :D - I like your studies very much, good diversity of subjects. The last poses in pen stand out, very nice!

Studies are looking good. I really like the motion captured in the horses.
Here are mine the film is two different ratatouille clips from you tube

The bulk of mine are really sloppy and quick but I'm trying to make as many mistakes as possible so I learn from them. (Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it) I do feel like I'm getting better at face planes even though I'm still winging it a bit despite doing some proper plane studies this week from the seriously helpful images Cory Hinman posted... I need to do more so that it really sticks in my brain.
My film sequence is from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I always loved her fight scenes with Glory
Yuzworks - I love how I can see the guitar from just a few describing lines. Good work
Vertical - Really graceful and expressive humans, especially the last few posts gorgeous gorgeous thick lines, head shape is the one thing that's sometimes seeming off but far better than I can do! Your horses are cool but often have a case of legs-too-long.
Angel_intheUK - Your angular ones are very lifelike, which is hard, well done
J@n!t - That reads just like a pro storyboard, v effective pencilling
Wingal - Your pencils are scanned a bit faint, but they look good, I love the expressions on the Ratatouille drawings.

YUZworks - Doing fine! You could place them side by side, but its not a problem. You took some tough reference though! Sometimes in the video (so also your figures) you can't see how the legs are bent/placed. So the reference is a bit unfortunately there. Torso area looks good in the 1st and 2nd pose! Clearly lit areas indicate good forms.
Vertical - Nice gestures! Lots of variation, tough poses. When drawing (especially some of the detailed areas you can get 'lost' in), it can be a good idea to 'take some distance' every now and then and review the overall proportions. To avoid getting carried away with one specific area, and then realizing it doesn't quite 'fit in' with the rest. Because I'm seeing some nice anatomy in the imagination studies! Great animals too.
Angel Intheuk - Heya Angel. Good resolution! Posemaniacs looking good, strong proportions, also in the poses with crazy viewpoints. I'd say you can 'get more out of the referenced poses though, you only seem to use them for the rough quick poses. If proportions are giving you trouble in the gestures from imagination, it can be good to memorize a few general measurements and guidelines. I always find it useful that a head has roughly the same length as a pelvis, with the chest being a bit longer. Pelvis as wide as chest, etc. Placing one heads length just below the chin puts you at nipple level. Those sort of things.
J@n!t - haha, these are great. Can only imagine what happens after the last shot. Nice job on their body language, especially Toms crouched position. Clearly up to something. Also interesting to see how that bomb has this rubber feel to it when it falls on the floor.
Wingal - Great animals! Don't be afraid to overlap some figures if you are running out of space. It can be tempting to just draw a part, like the head, and skip the rest. Sometimes you really need to finish a gesture to realize mistakes in a specific area, so it can be a good idea to complete gestures. The round construction circles in those heads are really effective. Couple of those last ones are really effective (bird, standing mouse, dog)
Iarchist - Great faces. Almost like sculpting! Still, its a good approach. Say you'd have to put a light source on it, you'll know exactly where to put your shadows. Understanding those forms is the key. I like your approach on the figures. Some are very organic and focused on those muscles while others have more construction. Feet may be a weakness (or you are skipping them!). I like the fight scene!
Bridgman arms, then some practice arms and poses. Lost concentration at the poses.

YUZworks - Nice choice of reference. Maybe you could have filled in the shadows so the figures are easier to decipher.
Vertical - Good action. The animals come across nicely.
Angel Intheuk - Hard to crit such short poses, but they're nice.
J@n!t - How fun! Well done.
Wingal - I haven't seen the movie but i can tell what is going on from your drawings.
larchist - The shapes of the heads in the first panel are strange. The horse study is great.
Anthis - Clean, solid, beautiful. Definitely not sloppy. Seems like you're always conscious about line weight.
Graphite, charcoal, digital. Video clip courtesy of MJRANUM on deviantart. A bit sloppy; i kind of have an aversion towards erasing.

What a nice round, I feel ashamed to post here, I mostly drew shiny objects (and criticized other people's work, my critic skills are improving, why do I do this to myself) this week anyway so not much to show.
No optional either.
And I still can't criticize the gestures here, I'm no good it there are many pictures to tell my opinion about.
I tried to draw heads, use pencils again (I badly need a new sketchbook, this one has too dark paper :( but I can't buy one here), I tried to draw figures after I avoided them for long and I tried use a loose messy aproach. I did sketches but they aren't good yet.

I tried to draw a cute girl from a very stylized anime. I changed the style of course, I'm too bad with lines anyway ;) Wip, it's still hard :(

I'm so ashamed I wrote less than usual.
Nice job, everyone, SC topics are more and more pleasant to visit :D
Anthis: beautiful, beautiful arms... The human body is wonderful. You reminded me I planned to draw arms... I finally know the muscles, what is keeping me... I'm an idiot. A lazy one at that.

ShiNIN: Nothing wrong with your stuff from my end. I'm glad you did it! You are getting more genuine expression in your work.
Zy.: Nice eye candy! I had to go watch that video ;) Just as I suspected ;)
anthis: Clean, consistent, and the forms work. I like how the Bridgman arms are your arms and not copies.
Larchist: I can see you doing exciting things with the faceted heads. It fits right in with what you do and takes it a step further. Love the head of the horse with his head stretched up in the air. Definitely got the anger and power out of the Buffy sequence.
Wingal: I want to hug your reptiles. They look all squishy and soft and fun.
Angel Intheuk: I have to force myself to do gestures as well. It hasn't been long since I started, but there are so many uses for them!
Here are the rest of mine. Decided not to continue with Tom and Jerry. Starting to really let 'er go with the gestures. I think it's funny that other people work on cleaning theirs up while I work on being loose. These are from a horse race we went to last year.
