ROUND #228:: Thalestris, Queen of the Amazons

DESCRIPTION

Thalestris, Queen of the Amazons

The Amazones were the toughest female warriors in classical mythology. It is said they cut off or burnt out one breast to be able to use the bow more freely. Also there are rumors that once a year they would visit a neighbouring tribe. The male children that were born after these visits were sent back to the neighbouring tribe, whereas the girls were raised to become even stronger amazones. Thalestris was the leader and Queen of the Amazone tribe and some say she visited Alexander the Great and stayed with him for 13 days and nights, hoping he would give her a daughter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalestris

Design Thalestris!

Keep in mind she is a fierce warrior, not “a hot chick with a sword”. Think of her weaponry and armour, and how she would wield it.
You are free to change the time period and setting, but the character has to be recognizable as the leader of the amazons.

Good luck!

I want in. Been meaning to join an activity for a while.
Be editing with my progess later.

First edit*
A punk/trash dominatrix is my basic idea. Taking some elements from the classic representation and adding a lot of anachronism is the main path i`m taking with the looks. very rough sketching. Catching ideas and sorting out my material.

Second edit
I start building the actual image in PS. Need some extra work for the right hand and the secondary submissive male character i`m including.

Third edit
I start shaping it up.

Hi there! I've been a member of the community for a quite long time, but never had the nerves to participate in anything. Just kept watching from shadows... you guys are monsters and I'm a big fan of a lot of you.
The fact is that if I never show my face I'll never improve, right? So I decided to participate in this round.
Thinking about a brazilian indian from amazonic forest version, maybe loosely based on the culture from a tribe named Carajá. It's ok to change settings, right?

Hope I can become part of the group and learn a lot from you guys. ^L^

Great start!

Decided to dip my toes into this one. I`m going for a more "Slavic" approach, with fur trimmings, medallions, the whole shabang...I`m all "rusty", and so much more work ahead...@_@

It's been a good long while since I participated in the Chows. I need to learn, so I'm going for it starting with this one. We'll see how it goes, and hopefully I'll be able to finish something in time :) If not, hey, you learn from everything you do so it's always worth it.

Can't resist this CHOW - Any excuse to paint regal women who kick ass. I think the basic pose and is down (unless everyone hates it) and now I'm going to work on the costume and weapons.

My thoughts for so far is to make the environment in which the Amazons live a little.... colder and something with more of a celtic/norse feel.

Attached is the initial concept sketch. I am extremely sorry about the quality. Waiting for the drivers for my new scanner to turn up.

HI! I've been around for a while, following previous CHOWs, but this is my first actual entry. So, any C&C-s are more than welcome :)
I imagine amazons, featuring they were women, as some sort of guerila type warband, that is more skilled in ambushes and hit&run tactics than in open warfare. So, I'll try to give this character a bit of guile and try to make here armour good for camouflage. Also, since this character is a leader, she will, as other leaders of that time, be a person of war, fighting in first lines. This is a quick sketch, just a bids-on-pose-and-all-that type of entry :)
PS pardon my poor English :)

January 11th, 2011, 09:21 AM
i had an idea about a minoan amazon, (the amazonian and the minoan culture apparently had a lot in common so some believe thats where they originated) jumping over the bull in the ancient tradition of "ταυροκαθάψια" (taurokathapsia). i am taking some artistic liberties with the positioning of the body as, in reality, the dancers charged the bull head on, and leaped over his length using his horns as a "handhold". i might play around with the composition see if another jumbing pose works better.

January 11th, 2011, 09:35 AM
here are some further doodles :) I'll try to work on the character first and then enter a background...probably a battlefield or maybe a forest of some sort, so it looks like the amazons are preparing an ambush...

Started work on my digital concept now. Took me ages to figure out the right pose then saw my Sylvanas figure on my desk and it was just perfect.

Not sure if I'm going to stick with by initial norse inspired design as she looks a little too much like Boadicea...

Trying to mix traditional amazon tribal with a bit of fantasy. Went with more of a female fitness/bodybuilder build, but not to the point of digust :P. Still trying to make her more queen/leader like.

I'll try the Scythian approach depicting the Amazon queen as a Scythian female warrior.

LOL Troglodyte - tough as in disgusting misandric harridans - i think the boys would be lucky to go with their dads having mothers like that!!

I just thought that the outset of the brief made them sound a little more tame than most of what i've read about them...

Artfix , super nice! She looks really majestic. Great composition and pose

tempest-haze I like it a lot, her expression and eyes are awesome.
When rendering the animal please don’t let it steal to much attention from her face. I think her eyes are the stars of the show in this image, all the rest should just lead the viewer to them :)

Only thing i could say is that her legs looks a bit awkward. If you are using a photo ref for the pose don’t be afraid to deviate from it, photographs can fool you sometimes for various reasons. But am sure u know all this.

Made a super quick paint over for the legs. Just an ide hope u don’t mind!

Artfix - love the pose, great use of light.

Tempest-haze - love the face and intense look, really nice rendering - agree with Jager on the adjustments to that leg.

Parsakoira - as always, super awesome. Still adore your use of color and the painterliness of your work. I feel like there's something a little off on her left leg ( hers, not ours ) - It's possibly because her breechcloth looks like it is 'straight' and not tilted to match with the hip and it is throwing my eyes. Can't quite put my finger on it though.

dashinvaine - really enjoying watching that progress!

Jager - can't decide which I like best. I like the sort of regal repose thing on the right, letting us know she's a queen.

i was going for kind of a smug little smile not so much a walking throught the park kind of smile which apparently is what i got. :P the face obviously still needs a lot of work so i ll change that in the proccess. or i might even give her a fierce growling expresion. we ll see...

Sounds sensible I guess :P One thing though, I'd like her to have a bit more of a feminine pelvis. She has a bit of a masculine build at the moment? Probably a personal preference but it might make her look a bit more 'fertile'

This is turning out a little more like fashion photography than I intended, but I'm going with it, damn it. I figure that glamor is at the heart of the assignment, so why hide it.

It seems like the trick to depicting this androgynous female warrior is walking the fine line between a pin-up girl with an archery kit and a guy with a boob. I can only hope for her sake that I have time and talent enough not to fail her either way.

I feel exactly the same. She's got to be strong, muscular and manly enough to be the leader of some of the most hardcore fighters of their time, yet femanine and beautiful enough for Alexander to haver spend a full fortnight with her! I have a habbit of drawing pinup girls as it is and I'll think I'll finally have a good idea, show it too my husband and get the response; "Yeah, she's hot" :S

I have 100 trained monkeys with photoshops who do all my work :) just joking! In the beginning i use overlay layers, many of them with adjustments to get the color scheme i want, then i start applying more saturated colors with brushes pretty much. More adjusting and overlay/color layers when needed as i progress

Jager: Thanks for the paint-over! I know how deceptive photos can be; however, I am determined to make the original pose work (: I changed the angle of her leg ever so slightly, but if you still feel it doesn't look right, I'll take your suggestion. (: Also, regarding your sketches, I'd go with the middle one. It has a lot of attitude ;)

tbaldree: Thank you! I'm really loving how yours is turning out as well (:
I tweaked the leg, as I mentioned to Jager above. Does it still seem awkward to you?

Thanks, but it kinda seems like your muscle grade/face changes are more of an alternative preference than an improvement. I'm not trying to be resilient to your crit or anything, its just her hard features is intentional to what I had in mind for the design. :)

It's lovely, and well painted. It looks like you depicted your ginger sister in the cold and added a dish towel to her crotch to make it a bit strange.

So, your suspicions are correct if you think this doesn't look at all like an Amazonian queen. If that's your sister, though, give me her number.

Seriously.

Hey tempest-haze, was passing through and thought I could help a bit. Feel free to ignore me though

I like her a lot, the problem with the leg is that the pose is anatomically impossible. You have the shin bone going down the front of the leg, but the peak of the knee is to the side. They need to line up. If the leg is out to the side like that, then for the foot to be facing forward it needs to be pretty heavily twisted. The knee joint can't twist like that (only 5 degrees or so), so it mainly has to happen in the ankle, midfoot and forefoot

Actually, looking at it again, it may be that you do have the anatomy ok, but that highlight I was reading as the tibia is actually the ridge of the soleus muscle? If you soften that down a bit it may solve the problem by itself

Speaking more as an anatomist than an artist, but if you wanted I can try some paint overs tonight. Or just ignore me!

Pixeltuner: I like that character design a lot already,
looking forward to see how it ends.

teapo Looks promising , keep pushing it and think about the edges of your forms. They should be either soft, hard or lost.
Also right now i think it is a little unclear what you have to the right in the picture. if it’s part of the storytelling try to make it more readable. Or consider removing it to keep the composition clear.

El_Khan looking good, maybe you should turn the girls head even more so she looks in the same direction she is aiming. also think about from which direction the light is coming, top left maybe? the surfaces should have a light side and a dark side.

tempest -

i guess the way I see it you could do 2 things. by turning the foot, you could address the 'weirdness' of the leg shape,

but i think there is a better change. on a deeper look (i was at work before) im not sure the lower leg is the problem, but rather the thigh

this picture probably explains it best - the 2 femora do not meet at the same pelvis. The right thigh is heavily foreshortened, leading to a tucked, distant pelvis (in white), while the left femur is pretty much horizontal, leading to a flat, and far closer pelvis (in red)

i think this is where the disconnect is, if the left femur did angle back towards the tucked (white) pelvis, then the angle of the lower leg might also look fine, or at least not need too much adjustment!

it is a great picture, i love the latest version. I think that pose is one of the hardest to get right, you are doing a great job.

edit: sent you a pm

Everyone is rockin' the goodness. I'm in progress on all this stuff.

Don't be frightened by the blue steel maniac in my ref pics. It was way more entertaining to use my own mug as facial ref and transgenderify into a woman than it is to search for a good stock shot... and it's free!

Wow thi sround is looking great!

Parsakoira: Looking awesome as always, love your flesh tones must pick your brain about those

Bnoch: Damn you're a talented fella, looked at your SB the other day and my eyes nearly fell out

Tempest-haze: looking good though that leg looks odd to me, almast looks like an arm with a foot at the end

Jager: love it! Wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of her. Though for me I prefer the composition before you flipped it

ReneOcho: The perspective looks too extreme to me almost fish eye lense. Makes her look dwark like

Teapo: I know it's not done yet but I feel you need to lift her from the background the door looks like it's on a plane infront of her

Artfix: Great light and pose but I think her facial featured are a little skew the eye closest looks a lot bigger and at a different level to the other

having a ridiculous week, feeling tired now, and I need to keep the momentum up if I'm going to finish, hopefully posting my attempt here helps :S Sorry my comments are probably a little late to be properly useful, but oh well:

ReneOchoNueve- Your ideas have taken you to a very original looking portrait. got a really lifelike texture too, I want to see colour =D

JanJager- I love your perspective handling.

Pxelslayer - Her attitude is Amazon even if the location/garb isn't necessarily there. I am seeing more celtic queen than anything though.

Vodus - her jaw is maybe excessively masculine, eyes and costume are great though

cz64- ouch! does that armour bend at the waist?

AndreRuben - great helmet idea in your first sketch, I guess you're literally setting her in the Amazon rainforest? keep going I like the gorillas.

Bonzulac - I don't think its necessarily a bad thing to have such an exaggerated bodyshape, gets the character over well to emphasise such things, she looks very tall and imposing. I like her superior expression

B.D.B - great hair, maybe have a specific palette in mind rather than mixing lots of bright colours in together, and use the colours you pick to create realistic skin tones.

Baxter - she is kickass and I like the tattoos. Hard to tell her gender, but then again, why shouldn't she be a little androgynous?

Cowboysurfer - Nice descriptive drawing there. Would be good to see more on it.

Volj - nope I assure you I'm right there with you but the main thing is to work to your own standard and keep learning =D My tips are quite late this week I know but her proportions are rather elongated, if you can think to measure them next time on a real figure or proportion drawing it will help. I like the boots and weapons a lot

Bnoch - The second one is fantastic but the first maybe a little scrawny for a warrior queen. Its still very well executed and an original idea though

Jager - Looove it, her forehead seems a bit peaky, but your execution is great.

Teapo - my anatomy expertise is short, but is her chest too high for that angle maybe? Its not clear what she's doing. Is she spreading her arms in welcome or doing Tai Chi? I really love the face, she looks full of personality.

Tempest-haze - Yeah I'd change the leg and the foot a little, maybe bringing the toes out more to the right but I do love the pose, the PS effect bg is a bit distracting but the composition will look awesome when further worked on!

Artfix - this is stunning, she is missing any Amazon references, but is kickass enough that it doesn't matter

El_Khan - I preferred #3 because there was more movement, and you could 'feel' the motion of going down the slope, it still looks good though, the colours are a bit muddy in places, but that can be fixed without too much effort with a few more strong midtones or something. look forward to seeing it done

Elixy - Brilliant costume design

Untouched24 - you have some great tones going on there, keep going

Parsakoira - Brilliant, she's very frightening.

Pixeltuner - Cool, but you cut off the wrong breast, maybe flip it? I doubt it really matters hehe.

Dashinvaine - I love this concept, for some reason it draws me in hehe and I feel like I am fighting. There's quite a lot of brown and grey in it, can you find any other exciting colours to use for midtones? I adore her helmet.

Verehin - nice but what is she gesturing at? What is she holding and who is the guy? Maybe I'm just too curious :P

tbaldree - Very Xena, beautiful face, somehow not quite sure of the random helmet spike, makes me think she's an elf with a pointy ear.

Mine's looking very piecemeal at the moment. She's supposed to be slipping in a pool of blood. Really I only like the upper body and arm section on its own, but this is a good challenge for me, bang goes the comfort zone, hehe :]

Nice fantasy feeling.
drunken_drinker
Great colours and character. Perhaps her forearms look a bit big and why not remove the black from the knife.
El_Khan
I like the idea with the lion.
larchist
Very storytelling with the persons in the background and the fire. I like the character and the colours. The shoulders works well.
Perhaps she seem to fall to the right. Maybe look at some ref pictures. To push the anatomy.
Bnoch
Great love her character.
Jager'
Very good. Great expression. Perhaps her right leg connects a bit low on the body.
ReneOchoNueve
Interesting take.
tempest-haze
Nice native feeling. I love the composition and the look on her face.Tricky pose to draw.Upper body works well. Perhaps look at some ref pictures.
Her knee seem to point directly to the left while her foot points directly forward without showing the twist of the leg.
Artfix
Beautiful forms and wonderful light.
Elixy
Very nice outfit details and expression in her face. Looking forward to see it finished.
PxelSlayer
Great. I think you hit the Slavic Amazon. Why not let her have a weapon, sceptre or something in her right hand
Parsakoira
Awesome Great light anatomy and details in her outfit. I like the version with less blood better. Why not just suggest the blood.
Pixeltuner
Nice appearance. The hairstyle and her look gives me a schoolgirl feeling. In combination with her hard-nosed attitude its great.
Shorinji_Knight
Nice take, outfit and composition. Perhaps push her face a bit more.
dashinvaine
I like the overall look and the armour very much. Her expression in the face also nice. Perhaps extend the canvas on the left.
Make her spear longer or change the angle of her hand. I think you can do a loot more with the shadows on the ground, her legs and from the shield.
Crowsrock
Very nice skytic appearance. The horse overall look feels genuine. But I think you can work more on the legs and neck of the horse.
Mitze
Good.Powerful warrior look.

My sister has posed for the leg position but she's a shrimpy 13 year old... so I've also looked up some muscle diagrams, hopefully I don't need to go searching for more refs, I'm not great at finding good ones

hope they are somehow useful:

Artfix: looking great, thats a really powerful pose !

tempest-haze: thats a really nice pose, really complicate to do. it looks weird is some places, the righ leg looks kinda short. anyway , one of my favorites i hope you can fix it.

Elixy: Thats a pitty, i really liked your design.

Drunken_drinker: I like it .. she looks like she looks stab someone ... it would be nice to see what she stabbed thou.

Vodus: I like the fist one more ...the pose is more dinamic and you can easily change some details and saturate it a little so it dont look soo WARCrafty,

JanJager: I like the atmosphere but i think she looks too civilized for an amazon.

gerezon: thats looking great already ! looking forward to see how it ends

Aly Fell: looking cool .. soo bad you wont finish it.ç

Pixeltuner: Thats looking great ! the funny thing with her ponytails is that make her look more girly, not something you would expect on an amazon .. but becouse of that it makes her more interesting :P

NoShot: I dont really thinks she looks like an amazon ... except for her weapons.

I was really struggling with the style of my original piece and it was taking ten times longer to do anything. So I went back and redid the character in a style I was much better versed in. The design is still the same, it's just a bit more stylized.
