View Full Version : More head fixers
Dan Milligan
March 19th, 2004, 12:54 PM
Ok this is my plan. Who’s doing paintings of skinny guys who smoke a lot and fix robots?….NOBODY. Milligan corners that market.
Another study worked up from my sketchbook.

Alright, alright, maybe it's not a huge market now, but you'll see one day everybodies gonna want a skinny robot fixer guy who smokes painting, and then who will be laughing...

thats great Dan!
both of these guys upper thighs look a bit beefer than they should be,, in comparison to the rest of there body. one of the funniest looking things about us skinny people is our skinny legs..
i have a tendancy to exhaggerate this area in a lot of my characters aswell..
i think its one of those comic book "bag o tricks" things that i started doing long ago and am now having to conciously weed out.. it probably comes from copying Jim Lee back in junior high.. hah!

Awesome Dan.
I'm liking this more painterly stuff from the sketchbook. Your boards rock on the commercial side of things, but I'm sensing a little Rockwell in these.
Nice indeed.

One look at their faces and we know its hard work. Do they even feed these technicians enough??
Ultra cool stuff. I like the faces, their body language and the composition. Its almost like they're stuck in this daily grind and they're just numb to it. Totally reminds me of my workplace!! :D 'cept I don't smoke.

those faces and expressions are badass, mr. milli-pimpdaddy-gan. These dudes gots PERSONALITY!!
They remind me so much of dock workers taking a quick smoke or coffee break, watchin their fellow workers drone on and discussing their plans on "leaving dis joint the first chance i get"...
you, sir, bring out the fanboy in me :)

Ah yes, but you DRAW robots, whereas these dudes FIX robots. ;) Although, technically, you do fix robots onto some sort of medium...damn...owned. :(
Hehe, on a serious note, I'd like to say, along with everyone else here, how badass these guys are...with these two pictures alone a sort of world is developing around them. And I'm definately curious to learn more through these images. I hope you continue to be inspired enough to draw them. :D

Thank you ladies,
I think "i was ink" suggested I continue this theme.
Maybe I should explain the on going rivalry between Android and myself. Back in high school, yes we are childhood friends, we were constantly competing against each other. You know, the usual, sports, girls, grades, girls. In 9th grade I came down with a nasal infection. Turns out that antibiotics had no effect, so the doctor recommended having my adnoids removed. In the weeks leading up to the surgery, Android and myself were embroiled the a close battle for student president. The nasal infection gave my voice a very unique quality. So much so that the student body started referring to me as ADNOID.
My new nickname became so popular that I had no choice but to use it on the ballot.
Anyhow, to make a long story short, I won the election by three votes. Android claims to this day that he would of won if it were not for the obvious voter confusion.
So in closing this kind of statement Andrew has made is just another in a long string of false accusations.

"Milligan corners the market."
You, sir, make me at once humble in the presence of your talents, and proud to share a surname with you.
The funny thing is, I'm currently writing RPG material about skinny guys who smoke and fix robots...

dan! well i like it but for the sake of constructive criticism i will point out some major flaws in the piece.
first off the color is all wrong! too monochromatic and earthy in base. who paints with these colors!
secondly, the fixers are too skinny, the one guy can barely pick up his coffee, he has to use both hands. how is he supposed to work on heavy machinery.
thirdly, talking about coffee, it's cold and their cigarettes are not lit. frankly i don't know why everybody thinks this is sooooo amazing, especially with the cold coffee faux pas!
all said while downloading to my hard drive, soon to be added to the dan milligan shrine when printed out.

Here’s a warning to all you other artists out there:
I decide to do this painting of these robot repairmen so I
call my FRIEND Jon Foster. The conversation goes something like this …
DAN: “Hey Jon I’m doing a painting of these robot repair guys. I was thinking of making them all buff and really muscled up, cause they lift stuff all day. Plus I was gonna use real bright and saturated colours to give the piece a real fun and uplifting quality.”
JON: “Really eh… that’s not what I would do. I’d make it all monochromatic to set a real dismal atmosphere. And I’d make the guys thin and wiry, more like slaves than workmen. I would also avoid painting in steam from the coffee and smoke from the cigarette…..so cliché.
DAN: “Wow, thanks Jonny, you’re the best. I would never have thought of that.
Question, Why do I still love him.
Peace

I LOVE how they look like real factory workers. I'm tired of the buff super-man sci fi/fantasy stuff. I wanted real people in fantastic settings and Mr Milligan delivers.
That said, the image is really really good, better than the first one. Only crit is the guy in back looks his head is being squished by the pipe.

the run of the mill folks of the future are so neglected in concept art. This theme is great. Good choice on making them skinny, being from upstate ny (watertown) I've had the pleasure of working many low wage hard labor jobs and the idea that it will make you big and buff is a load. Most of these folks don't make enough to feed themselves adequately and forget about medical care. After awile you start to look like a mangled tree but you keep on going even though welfare pays better and you'd get more respect. These folks are the finest people I've ever known and the world would colapse without them . Look at me I'm on a tangent. If you want to know more about low wage america, read " Nickled and dimed" Ok I'll shut up now.
Love you stuff.
