ROUND #227 :: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

DESCRIPTION

Because the holidays are coming up, we are giving you three weeks for this next ChoW!

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

The Four Horsemen are described in the Book of Revelation and appeared when four of the seven seals of a scroll in God’s hand were broken… Four monstrous beings appeared, all riding a horse in different symbolic colors: red, white, black and pale. The beings represent aspects of the Apocalypse: Conquest (or Pestilence), War, Famine and Death.

The story of the Four Horsemen has inspired many artists, old and new. This round it’s your turn to show your interpretation of the Horsemen.

Design the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!

Design one or more of the Horsemen
Setting and time period is completely open to your interpretation, as long as the colors and themes remain the same as in the original story

Man there's some really great work here! I haven't done one of these in over a year so this was a lot of fun! Sadly I didn't have time to complete all four so I chose to focus on just War; I didn't even get to do the horse either :( Oh well, it started as a male and I finally decided to go with a female. Hope you enjoy and good luck to everyone!

Please look at the actual pieces pieces, as some are too small in the poll to give them justice!

Great work everyone, especially who did all four!!

Cuts for this round:

Reginanegra: your poses are copied from mucha's works :http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lc9a3vaZgG1qd1zczo1_500.jpg and http://www.fantastisch.nu/images/user/mucha.jpg . There is nothing wrong with being inspired by someone, but copying something this close does not fit in ChoW.

artfix and parsakoira got my votes. as i've stated before, parsakoira's is just pure design sex,i love it. and artfix gets big props for the different setting. hope you're gonna post an even bigger version some time, i'd love to delve into the details.
honorary mention to dranyer - good ideas and nice render, but dude why'd you have to switch the composition around? i find it not nearly as impactful as the original, mirrored one. from the more ferocious creatures storming the viewer first, to the fact that it would've fit more closely the biblical description, as in who appears first.
oh yeah, big props to everyone who finished all four!

Whew, I'm still sorry I decided to resurface here on the boards midway through this challenge. Would've loved to explore my own interpretations of the characters. Nevertheless, my votes go to Drayner, Parsakoira and DBed.

Drayner's Horsemen are menacing and rendered fantastically, with awesome nods to different cultures without feeling too costumey or specific. (Even though I do agree the initial order was more effective.) Much of the same applies to Parsakoira.

Dbed gets my other vote for putting a unique spin on them. I liked the "50s greaser gang from Hell" vibe.

Honorable mentions to Artfix (while I appreciated the composition and final result, I just don't feel like I got enough clarity in their individual designs) and Jager (I think it's a beautiful take on Death/Pestilence with the whole idea of the Plague Doctor spreading sickness instead of healing it, really would have loved to see your take on the others.)

my votes go to Artfix, Bhenart, Grunler, Jager, JanJager and Parsakoira. With Jager and Grunler beeing my favorites , Jagers attempt far ahead of all others for me, feeling reeeeeeally creepy to me. I ve chosen them because I think these are the ones with the best overall feeling and/or execution .

Well, let me say that your image too dull, concerning color, design of character and composition. Let me check it more so i can give you better critique, i will edit this post

M

edit:ok i have checked all entries, some cool works
Carnifex when i said your work is dull that was my first impression. Maybe it sounds harsh, but that will push you to reconsider better composition and usage of color. Take a look at Jager's work( he worked in b/w, so he didn't waste time on color, but range of his gray tones are so wast, great sense of foreground objects/background objects-legs). Then take a look of Parsakoira, cz64, Drayner and Jan Jager, they all played with some interesting shapes, color, detail, lights, some character definition etc.
Overal your work is ok, but you need to push limits to get your work more interesting

Ok my votes goes to Jager(excellent work, but to bad you didn't menage to finish all four of them), Drayner(well rendered, interesting design) and cz64(original, but i liked sketches even more, they look so fresh-any Francis Bacon inspiration?)

Your ideas aren't "that bad." Not at all. I think the skull/head/pus thing going on on your horseman is pretty fantastic. For me, personally, after such a cool piece like the head, the rest of the piece feels kind of bland. I wish there was something about the costume that reflected the coolness of the skull/head design - if this is pestilence (it is disease, right?) I want to see desolation, disease and decay in the clothes, the horse, everything. For a guy in a mask on a horse, it's pretty good, and your anatomy and rendering are improving all the time. But I don't get the epic concept of a horseman of the APOCALYPSE from this, you know?

There are a couple niggly things to add to that - your colors still don't feel too unified to me (they're even a little muddy), and the crop around the head and tail make the horse feel squished in, like cramming it all into the canvas was an after thought.

1142232

I did a quick doodle to show you what I might do with it, if it were mine...you can push it WAAAAAY further than this. Think about ways to carry the concept through the whole thing. And I really do like that skull/pus thing. :)

Wow, the work put into these entries is magnificent!! I found that for the most part, the concept really showed through on the pieces. A couple fell flat, and there was at least one piece where I couldn't even make out the characters within. But I have my votes, and it was STILL hard because so many really gave me a sense of fear and worry and intrigue...

I voted for the following:

Parsakoira: I can relate to your explanation from working with them SO MUCH! Well, I think you did a lot of great work with them! I really like your details on the horses. Each shows its characteristics well...and the War horse's mouth scares me!! Very interesting too, how much more decayed Death is than even Famine, which has a little more life in its stance and its mane.

DBed: Very cool idea you got! The men look awesome, and I find myself so interested in their personalities, even beyond the brief! Love the style and their subtle expressions!

JanJager: Veeery neat, each one of them--the men and the horses (backgrounds, too!)--are so distinct, and really bring out which horseman is which. I mean, I love Conquest's jovial persona; the War horse's creepy wildness; Famine looks kinda sneaky, like he'll steal whatever his horse seems to be looking for; And Death...I didn't even notice till right now that he's missing a lower jawbone, among other things. >_< Anyway, these may sound like odd comparisons, but I really like how you brought them all out!

nram: Awesome idea for Famine with the mouth belly. And very interesting that the horse actually has a bigger belly! That's a neat contrast! Excellent work on the horse as well as Famine.

Dranyer: Great idea with having the four different animals...and Death is so creepy because the...ram? I don't want to assume, ignore my guess...anyway, that animal is gruesome. Your attention to detail is amazing! I find it also cool that the horsemen's faces are covered--adds some mystery to them.

Notable mention:

Jeremy Colwell: I think the style of this is so interesting! I think my favourite is War because I like his bulk, his stance and that "Grrrr" look on his face. XD

Grunler: I actually really like the colours here! They're vibrant when need be, and they give a really good contrast to all the horsemen. I had a little trouble making out some details because they have a bit of blur to them, but I see that you gave such a great, commendable effort that I wish I would put into more of my stuff. :P ;) Hee hee!

Sivonja: Very cool idea with the gears! It's unique in that they're so like crazy machines, but still having some relevant characteristics that come out well!

Jager: Oooh, so eerie in black 'n' white!! O_O I like the mood here!! I find it rather blurry/muddy, but it adds to the mood. Very strong movement, too! I can FEEL the horse pounding through the ground...or bones. XD

Just to mention, Shorinji_Knight, I notice the backgrounds and the characters are so saturated, but also have heavy shadow. I think you'll be able to bring out the characters more if you contrast them from the background more, and use less shadow/burn. The characters are more important, so "zoom" them closer too, if that might help! Great efforts!

Carnifex, I'm glad you keep working hard and making the efforts with CHOW. It's so much more than I try, so I'm inspired by how you keep going! I think the movement was becoming very lively, though the colours are so close together, I don't feel a creepy jump from the horseman or the horse, but more of a painting of a legend. I don't know how to work on that yet, still learning, too. But I know you can do it, you definitely can!

--

For everyone else who I didn't say anything about, just great work and I will always feel inspired to follow your leads in trying! I have yet to try a CHOW to the bitter end (well, I had more reasons before, but now I really must TRY). Congratulations!!

Hum, couldn't see the figures heh?.. That would be mine Sorry. This being my first chow I hadn't realized that they shrink the image so much for the poll. I've learned my lesson.

Shorinji_Knight, don't worry about it! Lessons learned, all the time. We're all dealing with different ones, but it's always good learning! ^_^ No need to apologize. Anyway, if you want to vote for more than one, just check the little grey box on the left of a picture. :D

Oh, once you vote, you can't vote anymore. Once the button is pressed...but I think sometimes if you make a plea you might get to have your votes reset. Don't quote me on that, I just saw it once! o_o
