ROUND #226 :: Your Muse

DESCRIPTION

Your Muse

The muses are originally Greek goddesses who were the source of knowledge and inspiration for the creation of literature and art. In later times, the muse became the symbol of the person that inspires an artist. A lot of famous artists, singers and designer have muses. Yoko Ono inspired John Lennon, Catherine de Neuve inspired Yves Saint Laurent, Fernande Olivier was one of Picasso’s muses.

What would your muse look like?

Design your muse!

Can be male or female
It must be an original character since this is a design contest, but (s)he can be inspired by someone you know
What kind of style/era/personality inspires you? Put these elements in your character.

My muse is quite the elusive one. Sometimes she blasts inspiration in my ear, other times she hides and laughs at my futile efforts to grasp her. Or she flies off and leaves me alone for days. But she always leaves me wanting to see more of her. A small tease.

Oh dear, I forgot to mention what my Muse was supposed to be. My muse is a vibrant entertainer, the wings symbolize dreams and hopes, and the lucky chameleon is willingness to adapt to any situation. Oh, and she steals hearts, on many levels.:P
My first chow. C&C greatly appreciated.

Hi here's final version

My muse reflects my influences and inspiration. She is a goddess of beauty and ugliness of the world, a goddess of knowledge and perseverance, of faith and war.

sort of, no time to fix some colours or to finish the feets

hehe i saw so much bright pretty girls on the wips i couldn't resist going on the right oposite side:D

so only 3/4 of the character is necessary right?

Deadline! Few minutes grace as usual...

eronzki999 Its not allowed to post comments in this thread before the deadline. But because you posted a lot of useful crits Ive quoted them here, so people can still read it:

Forgive my lack of english but I'll try my best

Parsakoira- you'e captured the topic well. Your illustrative presentation made it easier to tell about the character and one can guess without naming the topic.
The anatomy and pose is great as well as the composition, my only concern are the colors I think there are many luminant colors in different directions and for me it feels confusing. I'm not sure but maybe it's the clouds that are too luminant.

ryanoir- interesting character. Sorry I'm not sure what he's wearing on his torso but I'm assuming it's a cloth, if I'm correct, I think you should have added shades or creases as hints to follow the shape of his body. His back looks a little big.

Breno- I like the pose of your character though the positioning is a little off. Her anatomy looks long. I think you should have measured the head count from the tip of her forehead to chin and not fro the tip of her hair. A little more contrast of her colors should help her pop out fro the background.

troyzart- I'm digging the character and I think the angle is really nice. Her right eye seems off. It shouldn't shrink in height, only in it's width. The specular should be facing the light source and not against it. Try to iprove shading work.
Keep it up!

jeremygordon89- She's leaning too much on the left side. Her pose and anatomy seems off. I advice you to try using reference for poses, it will help a lot.

Carnifex- I like your style and your character really is well done. The anatomy and pose are great though I woul like to see her in a more dynamic pose

lachist- I like the mood and the shades of colors. My concern is the anatomy and the pose
specifically of her bestial part. I think the horse portion is a little small in proportion.
Though it's really good that you used illustrative approach, it's regrettable that she's turning back and we cannot see ost of her character.

zepheenia- really nice concept, she's full of character. Advice I can give is to study more shading to bring out you character more.Right now she looks a little flat. But I can see you're going in a good direction.

Bluez30023- interesting character she's really sexy for me. I like the first and second step. The final outcome is lacking depth and values. Anatomy and pose looks great, the positioning is leaning a bit to te left. You could have added a ore interesting background to bring her out more

Phantaz- really nice character, and I like your composition. I think she doesn't look much like she's holding the guitar. I think it only needs refinement but I know you've joined late so it could hae been a lot better.

CreepySnake- I'm really liking your character and style and the pose is dynamic. My only concern is the color is a bit washed, I think more saturated color in contrast with the background could have bring her vibrant character even more.

AndreRuben- I like the color shading. The composition is really nice. interesting concept.

Xaya- I like how you've explored the creation of her character design, her face is beautiful and I think you're leaning towards a really nice style.I like the final and the first of the three. I'd like to see the fully complete.

first0- It's hard to gie critic on a work I know hae been done in rush. I think you should ae focused instead on the refinement of the first step. The shapes are a it edgy and that takes away her feinine feats.

ValkyriesBard- I really like your colors, they're vibrant and pleasing in the eyes. Really nice framing. The pose and anatomy is really good. It's also fun to see the progress. Your pencil work is gorgeous.
My only concern is her nose I think it's a little off. I think it happened in step 3. The light should be touching the botto of the nose and above is shading. The specular is curving in wrong direction. If you can't see, try flipping the picture.

JanJager- I really like your character, it shows your influence and inspiration. The shading, pose, anatomy are perfect, I tink I hae noting really to critic on.

Supervlieg- I really like te style of coloring you did, and she looks really sexy and voloptous, simple but has a lot of character. I think it could have given her more impact if she's looking toward the viewer like giving eye contact.

Muscari - I think she could have had a more dynamic pose, right now I can't really tell her character. But I know you've joined late it's really hard to do something in limited time.

It's 4:28 am here now, gotta get some sleep.

eronzki and phantaz got my vote.
phantaz actually hit the topic most for me. the things that inspire him are clearly visible,and while the execution could have been abit better, it comes closest to the brief.
eronzki's just pure eye candy. i actually try to go for concept over execution most of the time,but this is just irresistible. :bashful: appeals to my inner child/geek.

I voted for Dranyers for the simple fact the poll states "who's the most inspiring?" & his flesh work gives me goose bumps - it really makes me want to work harder & become better at rendering propper flesh tones! I believe that's inspiration, no?

Phantaz

I will have to agree that the rendering on Dranyers is absolutely amazing. Seeing the work produced on here is very much inspiring do to the level of technicality as well as everyone's approach to solving the problem. I will be more than happy to participate in more of these. Thank you very much Carnifex for enjoying my piece, it is much appreciated and I agree I could tweak it and do so much more with it.

D'oh, I failed so hard!! With the timezones, I usually have a little time on our monday after work.. yeeeah... not so much! :( Anyways, this was a difficult topic, very vague and very subjective, I know I had alot of trouble with it, so kudos to those that jumped in and got the job done!!

Parsakoira: I really like your work, this hit 'muse' for me, the bright scene she's inspiring, pushing back the stormy clouds of the dreaded creative block! Rich colours, interesting composition built on a solid skillbase, you got my vote!!

Eronzki999: Really interesting character, wielding infuences both creative and destructive! Meticulously rendered, just gorgeous (I'm also a sucker for a nice monochrome image!) +1 vote!!

@parsakoira:
somehow a classic, with the almighty brushstrokes :>
but I am kinda disappointed, because the character itself is not so outstanding
still, well executed mate

@ryanoir:
funny impression, but without background infos it looks way too simplified and imo there are missing some more details.

@breno:
some mistakes with the anatomy here. overall not soo obvious, but if I am not wrong the head is too small. remember: the shoulders are wide as 3 heads.

@troyzar:
can't tell much about this. pretty cool shading for that style

@jeremygordon:
I don't understand how this is inspirational :D
everything needs some more texture and the face is is kinda wrong.. I think the nose is lighted wrong.. just look at references with side light

@carnifex:
really awesome clothing, reminds me of the star wars concepts..
and your colours are seizure :D

@larchist:
funny idea. the background is way too linear :/ it's always better to take another perspective on walls. :)

@zepheenia:
love this cute design, especially this cool mermaid body
what I don't like is the blurry face and the shadeless hair

@bluez:
I think your shading needs more work.. lack of plasticity
and your wacom stuff would look more realistic if you add bright minimalistic highlights on them.

@phantaz:
oldsql metropolis? :D I suggest to you, to reduce your highlighting so everything looks more like metal ;)

@creepysnake:
more contrast and try colour contrast

@andre:
I like the idea but I prefer the version with the visible pencil lines..

@eronzki:
this is how my muse would look like if I had painted one, overloaded with equipment, accessoires and mulitple limbs :D
imho the wing-limb is not connected enough and overall sharper metal parts would make it even more awesome, because you painted the skin so smooth.

@xaya:
nice design, but it's sooo blurry :/

@first:
anatomy anatomy

@valkyriesbard:
she's kinda looking like she's melting.. the face is well executed.. but in the end I don't get why she's your muse.. she's just a naked woman :P

@jan:
outstanding design, reminds me also of star wars
sharpen up her shape and she's gonna look twice that awesome

@supervlieg:
tough colours dude

@muscari:
how much opacity are you using?.. I think it turned out too blurry, try 100% opacity ;D

@holymane:
pretty well executed, but his forearms are too small!

@andralexis:
actually a really cool design. her hands look like cut off of an old lady :P
the shading of the left leg is not fully correct, which makes the leg flat..

@formic acid:
nice lineart dude, but in the execution of her face is missing some contrast imo

@dranyer:
cool shape and anatomy :3 , but I think this fast added magic is not worthy of her..

MasterStryke: I'll take you commenting on everyone's entry except mine to mean that mine is perfect. :P

Parsakoira: It's been said before, but I'll say it again: your colours are awesome! Your composition also feels very alive and natural, and the soft rendering really suits it. Can't really see anything to criticize here. :asspat:

ryanoir : I love the hair and beard, the colour scheme is cool, and there's a really interesting atmosphere. His poncho seems to have the texture of clay instead of fabric though, and I think the magic in his hands is a little too understated.

Breno: Very striking. Seems like her legs are to long and her head's too small, but that could be a stylistic choice? I like the colours and the background.

troyzart: Nice metallic textures. I'm not sure you really pulled off the angle though, it looks like the background is tilting more than she is? And the clouds touching the ground and crossing the line of the horizon like that dosen't look quite right to me.

jeremygordon89: I think you needed to make it a lot more obvious that that thing she's holding is a pencil, and her left leg looks more two-dimensional than her right. Maybe you should try concentrating more on linework than painting?

Carnifex: Cool expressive character. Maybe it's just me, but I think the solid black background kind of kills the colours. Feels like they should be more vibrant.

larchist: Great idea! I really like the earthy muted colours and lighting. Maybe you could have had more contrast between the mythical and urban elements?

zepheenia: I think you fused the different elements of the character together really well. She does blur into the background a little bit though, it's too dark.

bluez3023: I really like the idea here, the composition, and the inclusion of the wacom. It looks kind of unfinished to me though. Might have worked better with strong vector-like lines?

Phantaz: Awesome character! Love the retro-futuristic design. I think her guitar and the background look too soft and squishy, they could have used some more definite rendering.

CreepySnake: Kind of reminds me of Delirium from Neil Gaiman's Sandman. There's a lot of personality in the character design, but I think the colours needed to be stronger, and the edges more defined.

AndreRuben: Lovely composition and atmosphere. It might have been cool if you'd left some of the pencil lines in? Maybe the image as a whole is a little too muted, but I got to say I really like your style.

eronzki999: Like a Hindu goddess! I can't fault your skillz!

Xaya: Awesome colours, but the brushstrokes on her body are so rough, it makes it look like a WIP to me. It might be a style choice, but I really don't think it works here, to be honest.

first0: Looks like a boss in a JRPG. That umbilical thing is an interesting idea, but the whole thing looks a bit underdeveloped to me, and I think the sharper lines in your WIPs are more fitting for the character.

ValkyriesBard: I like the soft glow-y colours, but the character design is kind of bland to me, to be honest. And this is just me, but naked women without nipples are weird. :P

JanJager: Very unique character. Looks fantastical and real at the same time. Is her leg supposed to be bending backwards? It looks like it is.

Supervlieg: Great colours, great composition, cool atmosphere.

Muscari: I really like her face and clothes. One nitpick, the hair below her shoulders seems to have a different quality from the hair above, makes it look a bit disconnected.

HolyMane: Very different indeed, awesome! I like the linework on his boots and armor. I think his arms look too stubby and his shotgun(?) looks like it's bending forwards.

Andralexis: Very cool use of colour, I kind of miss the missplaced eyes from your WIP, though. Eye's where they shouldn't be is always cool.

Formic Acid: She'd look at home in a European sci fi comic, and that's awesome. I'm not sure greyscale is right for it though, some nice flat colour would have really brought out your linework, which is very good.

Dranyer: Beautifully painted, but that fire is so... preset looking? It's a little distracting.

sceau: Awesome idea! I really like the harsh graphic skyline and the strong lines on the muse. But the whole image looks kind of streched sideways which is a bit offputting.
