Round #199 Mischief Maker

Topic:
Round #199 Mischief Maker

Have you ever noticed that our dear Mascot COW actually breaks a few of the fundamental rules of COW? (lark and I did, and as a result we're going to have a new mascot after round 200. But let us celebrate our old mascot this round with a bit of a precursor and a chance to relax on those rules, the same way our mascot does now...

This round is about the troublemakers of the creature kingdom. Creatures that get off on annoying others and breaking the rules. In fact, this is a creature so intent on making mischief and mayhem, that it even breaks the rules of COW. This round, we will allow entries that break one (and only ONE!) of the following rules:
1a. No humanlike creatures
1b. No plants
1d. No accessories or clothing
or
1e. No blob-like masses with no shape

This round will be a 2-weeker as preparation for our month-long upcoming round. Make sure to really make your creature look actively mischievous, whether that is conveyed simply through the creature's visible personality or through illustrating it in the act of causing trouble is up to you. Bear in mind that Mischief Makers caught breaking more than one rule will be caught and dealt with appropriately (a swift kick in the poll), but have fun, let loose and break that one rule of COW you've always wanted to.

EDIT: To clarify, this round is NOT determining our new mascot, that will be next round. This round is simply paying homage to our current one.

Deadline:
Wednesday December 29th, 2010. 9:00 PST (-8 GMT )

Here is my starting concept rough. Going with a spidery critter as a nod to West African Anansi lore. It's creeping around the city late on a snowy night stealing street signs and traffic cones, knocking over snowmen, and just causing as much mischief as it can.

The rule I'm breaking is the "no accessories" one with his sled full of ill gotten spoils. I thought about putting him in a spidery Santa suit, but I figured that would be two rules broken even though they are both rule 1d. I chose the sled because I think I need it to sell the idea that he has already caused chaos and is now excited about stealing another sign. The Santa suit was just for creating an interesting dichotomy of the mischief maker dressed as a saint.

Bear in mind, this isn't the mascot round, it's just a precursor to the mascot round coming up in round 200. This round is purely paying tribute to our current mascot.

Ok here's my WIP, just a quicky sketch without much thought. Most mischievious animal known to me is my dog and a Hyena, but my dogs so friggin small...So basing the concept of a Hyena and ended with this. I dont know if I'm keeping the 4 legs. might get into it more later on. Anyway, he's a panty thief. :D

Freddzie - I dont know what to make of your character. A little description will help a bit :)

JanJager - Really nice colours you have. Praying Mantis-type creature?

Skullbeast - I like how your concept is looking. But will your character be able to use the slingshot with only tentacles? I think the fingers we're a lot better :) would certainly give him the "mischief" feel. Since you changed him he looked more creepy and quite scary!

And here's my update. Kind of started from scratch with sketching out a few thumbnails. I really dont know what I'm going for yet. I may sketch out some more later. But the ones I'm drawn to the most are numbers 3, 5 and 7. Like I said, I dont know what I'm going for!

I'm saying keep the four legs; it adds more personality and uniqueness to the piece in my opinion. I love the eyes and tongue of this creature especially... he seems mischievous yet somewhat malicious. Also great for ideas so much thanks for posting.

Yeah, we have a pretty slow-paced thing going on here. I'm not sure how GameArtisan's is, but we usually have between 10 and 20 entries per round. I've seen as few as 5 and as many as 52. The one thing I could use clarification on in your entry is what COW rule you are choosing to break in your piece. Accessories, I'm assuming at the moment.

In GA I dont think we ever had as low as 5 entries...heh but anyway, I'm still glad to have joined this round, it seems I have learnt a new style. Which I am greatful for.

About the rule-breaking, to be honest with you I'm not entirely sure. First I thought I could break the Human-like rule because of his torso and arm anatomy, but it doesnt show it's human so much. So I could give him some accessories (The orange beast).

Mohzart
December 21st, 2010, 09:23 AM
OK, I think I'm done with this concept. I gave the creature a collar, and hoping it classes as an accessory?

mohzart, really looking strong. very imaginative and the rendering fits very well.
the red and blue shell on the right side ülus the crabman on the right donīt blend so well into the scene/background yet.

iīd love to know how that guy looks under his clothes.
this creature definetely has character - i like it more every time i look at it.

the lion-like apple-munching beast is looking good as well but isnīt as special as the shell-thing. it just has a red amulet to make it breaking the rule. thatīs kinda flat.

Mohzart
December 22nd, 2010, 08:23 AM
ninety9 - Thanks. The background does need a bit more work. I'm guessing underneath all that cloth is just a small body befitting the image of the arms and legs. I'd like to keep things for the imagination to keep the piece alive, like there's more to it than what's already on there. I will fix the background soon :D

The apple-muncher beast was a bit hard regarding accessories. What else can I add to him? some suggestions would be helpful. :D

Thanks for your feedback! much so appreciated!

Great creature. I like the colours really make the creature pop out. I think you can shape up the shells in the background specially where they meet the sand.
Perhaps render out the hand holding its tool a bit. I also like your first creatures.
DarkRyuukin
I think the best way of getting the anatomy right is to look at refs. Also remember that if heīs holding one arm in the air. the rest of the body will follow and twist a bit.
FilRam
I like the pose like it sneaking around and get caught in action. Perhaps its left leg looks a bit longer.
Freddzie
Nice look in he's face. I think you can clean up the rendering lot more.
skullbeast
Cool creature. Perhaps render out the face really sharp. Maybe also have the back light all the way up to the edge of the paper, to not have it to follow it's contour to much.
I think some hard shadows could contribute to realism.

Hers my new take. I was going for this Praying Mantis but forgot totally about the mischief part.

I haven't post anything for a long time now...

and since i just brought me a new one, i decided to take on this week's challenge... here's my take on it! (still not sure about the face though)
hope i have time to finish it!

i'm breaking the first rule!
No humanlike creatures

It's been a few rounds since I've jumped in, so here's a quick sketch. A mischievous creature comprised of heavily pigmented goop revels in placing stop signs along the highway, causing incoming cars to come to a screeching halt, only to realize that the creature has made them stop for the pure purpose of witnessing his comedic genius.

DarkRyuukin
December 22nd, 2010, 07:49 PM
Mohzart: Perhaps for the apple eating creature you could have some sort of headdress made of jewels to match the necklace?
JanJager: Might I ask what rules both of those pieces are breaking? They look good, but confusing at the moment.
Nram: I love your creature, especially its face and facial expression
Hope I helped~

I want to break the rule 1b. No plants

when this creature in egg still a embryo, its parents will put a special seed into the egg, after it grows up it pretty much merge with the plant,

the plant on its back will create some smell to stimulate the sexual behaviour of other creatures include human, and this creature can use the plant to grow out the dummy so the victim will be lure to mate with the dummy, so it can steal the victims stuffs also do some tricks on the victim

so yeap this is rought will paint it later on if it goes well with the rule

My first COW!!!!!!!!!!

When thinking of mischievous, the first thing that came to my mind was my moms (late) dog. So I modeled a werewolf of sorts after a Papillon and gave it a dagger and Molotov of sorts. tell me what you think and how I could maybe make it better? :D
So I call it Volatile Pup.

Dunno which rule to break.. Thinking of either the plant rule or the tool rule.

My creature specializes in hunting its favored pray; mischievous dogs. Some thumbs. inspiration from my gf's dog who destroyed a small thing she had been working on for hours. Bad dog! :P

Hey COWers! Been way too long. Round 200 coming up, figured I'd get warmed up for what I'm sure will be a round of beyond epic proportions entries with this fine topic. Gotta love mischief and everything associated with it. Mostly, I think it's just a really good excuse to see what sort of expression you can inject into a creature.

mohzart: Dude, you are tearing it up in here. I'm not so sure you're "not in your element" because it certainly appears as if you've found your place here in the COW. Great inspiring work you've thrown down so far. Awesome color control and personality in all these guys. Looking forward to your final.

JanJager: Man, look at all that fancy schwag under your name there! You've been busy with all the competitions, and winning it looks like! Really like where you're going with this critter, especially with the color and that crazy head. Now the real challenge is to make it look less like a common bug, and more like your own design. I have the utmost faith that you'll turn it into something spectacular as always. ;)....Just saw your redos, (smacking forehead hard). Definitely the pig dude.

Skullbeast: Hey brother, missed your scary style. Hope everything's going well. So, any plans to take it further than a sand worm? Love ya man. ;) Your textures are really coming under control by the way.

nram: Excellent style. Brings me back to the movie "Cat's Eye", one of my all time favorites.

Si Swe: Cool topic! Your blob is looking a bit awkward, even for a blob. I like the addition of the eyes to add a little character, but you might want to play around with their position.

openanewworld: Goddam, I love your sketches. Always have. Last one's absolutely a keeper!

UmpaArt: Great proportions and mischievous pose. Front leg's not really working for me, other than that, pretty darn cool.

DV: Hi there buddy, nice sketches as always. Have to go with the Dogslurper or the Tenticalishian Furrinator. Love to see em in a more actiony pose though. Give it some of your usual dynamic flare! :D

And mine:
The Circus Saboteur. Fun fun fun.

December 23rd, 2010, 10:47 PM
UmpaArt - Looks pretty damn nice. I think that tail could get a bit more dynamic than it is. I agree with scorge, that the front leg should be altered a bit.

mohzart - I've been really digging your style and bold colour use. Hope you can manage to stick with a design you're happy with. I liked your little shelled dude, but I think he could be a bit more mischievous.

JanJager - Man, I love both of those thumbs. I think I like the first one more, though, with the snowboarding rodent-creatures.

DefiledVisions - I'm totally with scorge here, the third or fourth designs are really nice. I lean towards the Dogslurper, though.

openanewworld - Man, I really love your style. Your COW entries have been really really impressive, I'm looking forward to seeing those thumbs develop.

scorge - Always nice to see ya' round here, glad you'll be participating and really hoping you'll participate next round. I realize my little blobule was not doin' so hot, I will be playing a lot around with the structure of my ooze-meister for a while (who knew designing a formless lump would be so damn hard!). Awesome sketch, love its grin. What does the harness it wears do, I wonder?

Here's a second blobule sketch I threw together... I hope it's looking a bit better. I still need to play around a bit.

Lancer - Thanks man! I appreciate the advice on the mouth, but I can't really figure out a way to make that work, and I kinda like the obscene grin he has at the moment. Particularly with the drips. I can understand you doing the ChOW this week, but you sure as hell better be around for round 200!

Liffey - Love it, keep on going!

Skullbeast - It's looking nice as rendering and design go, but let's see it doing acts of mild malintention! Heh...

FilRam - Really cool idea. Looking forward to some colour on there. Shadows are the weak point right now. They're a little too defined.

DarkRyuukin - Thanks! I hope I don't fuck it up to hard in the end... Ha. Let's see those updates!

Did a bit more work on mine. In the end, I think I'll alter the cell cuts so there's a bit of transition. Then I can throw some texture on there too. Here's where I'm at. I liked the idea that it might be formed out of used chewing gum...

MERRY CHRIMBUS! (yes im a tim and eric fan).

anyway... i finally got some time to jump in on this one. im going for the clothes accessories rule. the idea is that these guys are a species of hardcore hackers that hate all the other species that visit their planet. so they jack in to their technology and use it against them. in the background im gonna have a couple of spaceships blowing each other away because the hacker dude made them do so. might be hard to get that across. we'll see.

Mohzart - what can i say... great thumbs and a great use of color... in either of your pieces!
FilRam - nice one!... its looking great, although i have to agree with Si Swe, the shadows need a bit more work
Si Swe - i think you went the hard way when you chose to break the no blobs rule.. and to be honest i think you nailed it quite well...
your creature shows a lot of mischeveous personality for a blob :)
UmpaArt - looks nice...maybe a shadow would ground your char... it apears to be floating without it....
JanJager - shame to see the praying mantis gone... on other hand the first thumb you uploaded after, made me smile!
Liffey - keep it up! cant waint to see color on your piece!
openanewworld - nice start! keep updating im curious to see how your creature turns out! :)
DefiledVisions - nice thumbs! my prefered one isthe cactasian caninedevourer!

@Si_Swe
Good idea to have it jump out of trash cans.

Another great idea. Why not have him look at the space ship his going to blow.
@FilRam
I like it very much. Very graphical. Keep on render out the stripes. Its a lot of stripes but I think It will pay to do them really accurate.
@skullbeast
Last one is really creepy I like his head. Why not have some hard light from the side.
@Liffey
Lovely character in your creature. unique design. I miss the body of the irritated pig.

SiSwe: Just wanted to let you know that I do like the style of illustration you are going with this run. I like that hard edged vector kinda look. Something different instead of the usual strokey smeary painty paint ish.

Hey everyone...

I wasn't participating for too long. Here is my approach

Barking Bulb

These small and defiant creatures can be found on many planets, where they travel on pioneers' ships. They originate from plants, so their feeding needs are very tiny. All they need is a piece of the ground where they can put their legs-roots and sun light. They are small, but when they find their place they will defend it very fiercely. They are chasing away the intruders by making the noise which sounds almost like dog's barking. That's why people call them Barking Bulbs. Spiteful settlers like to drop them into neighbours gardens, just to observe how poor unexpecting miserables are barked at by those small bulbs. Also, chase after those small weeds is very entertaining. Because it's not so easy to catch those small bastards....

couldn't get around to finishing my piece so I'm sitting this one out guys.
