Spartan Camp #161 - 50 gestures + Optional "Action Pose Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 12th of December.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Action Pose Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:
As opposed to a still or relaxed gesture (which you often see in figure drawing reference and poses!) this this weeks optional study will focus on the body in action. Think movement, tension, strength, balance (or lack thereof!), speed. Sports such as boxing can provide great reference. As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Critting each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

surus: oh I see what you does here and there, in others's SBs :D (to tell the truth, I saw it once but you were pretty determinated)
I like your idea, I plan to draw my version of a SC "join us" girl ;) With somewhat less clothes of course.
The heads have some issues, first of all, that naive concept of the form of the human eye. I've seen some better eyes in your SB but this knowledge doesn't last long it seems.

It's so strange many people in CA draw figures but neglect faces. Faces are wonderful, my favourite topic :D Expressive faces tell stories, working with the bodies wonderfully...

I'm unconsciously scared of figures again, it seems but I try to do something about it...
I did some crappy doodle though... Hey... is it possible that my knowledge about the human body and gestures matured while I wasn't looking? Whenever I tried to draw a figure by myself, it became extremely crappy. Now my tentative doodles are way better. Maybe those zillion copied figures (I tried to analyze them but still...) and my anatomy studies were useful, after all...

shiNIN:

The girl wasn't planned as a "join us figure" (like uncle Sam's "I want you" to join the army). I started drawing for fun and added the join us-bubble and the spartan camp letters later.

knowledge doesn't last long it seems
Which knowledge? I don't even have an understanding of these concepts. There's no library of accessable stuff in my mind. I just copy what I see. The reason for the bad eyes is, it was faster than in other drawings and you are definitely right, when you see that I am not transferring maybe allready learned details of a bodypart. It is piece for piece a new "montain range" of the individual face and angle. I also think that drawing has to do a lot with "the right mood". If I am not in the flow of drawing and the pencil is not a prolongation of a fluid moving sequence with my hand, the results are as if I had never been able to coordinate my eyes with my hands. ;-) If you need some reference for faces, try to catch some Screenshots from here:

Found that in the refernce threads a few days ago and found it very inspirational and helpful.

I'm new here  Spartan Camp looks like a great way to learn and get feedback-- Here are my 50 gestures, I made myself do them all in one day, from Posemaniacs and Pixelovely.

For my action pose, I chose a photo I took this spring which didn't work photographically, but had a difficult pose to draw. I really did a poor job with the pastel pencils :(

surus - interesting link! thanks. I like your sketches simply because they are sketches. They can be much more interesting to look at than refined and accurate figures. Even though there are always issues - Shinin pointed some out - there's a lot to like. You show some interesting techniques to display foreshortening in the 1st scan. It seems that in the second scan (correct me if I'm wrong) you focused more on individual lines and placement in the right face. The left face is much quicker, and sort of 'generalizes' the big forms and shapes. More stylization. But proportionally stronger. Perhaps I'm just spewing random thoughts.. nice sketches!

J@n!t - welcome! Yes I'd always encourage commenting and helping each other out. It's useful to analyse other's drawings. I like your gestures, and also how you mixed reference. CG reference like posemaniacs is a LOT different from photography. The pixelovely reference works well for you, those organic shapes are convincing. You don't seem to lose your nerve on the tough poses with a lot of overlapping and foreshortening - you just draw what you see. Careful with those necks! Try out some from imagination! Nice optional study, complex image with those two (individually good poses) together.

Anthis: Thank you! The only foreshortening I saw (first scan), was in the letters. :) There isn't much planning in my drawing. It's a fluid thing, but you're right: the left face took me a few minutes / shorter timeframe than the right face.
