ROUND #224 :: Harajuku Warrior
DESCRIPTION
Harajuku Warrior
"It's not my sword that cuts, but my style" - Ayane Matsumoto, first of the Harajuku Warriors
Style is everything in the world of Harajuku! During the day a group of young fashionable people gather in the streets of Tokyo (on the Jingu Bridge outside Harajuku station to be precise), showing off their new fashion accessories and posing for tourist cameras. But for this ChoW, these teens turn into deadly fighters… the Harajuku Warriors! Prepare for the Super Style Showdown!
More info on the fashionstyles at Harajuku station:

A pointy umbrella to... jab her enemies with a bit... so it hurts, a little. Well maybe her secret power is 'glaring'! Not sure about the 'ears'... If I had some more time I'd do more with the background, but for now this is a texture compilation as an overlay.

In the end I voted for ArtBtZak, Dranyer, IDP, and Aly Fell.

I gave my vote to Aly. Strong anatomy knowlage and a awesome design. The background could have been more thought through. I only gave one vote. :P Dont know why really now in retrospect. It wast the strongest entry I think. I like some other ideas but the poses was so terribly unnatural and strange.

artbyzak::I like your composition. the panda weapon i think is appropriate and I like how you handled the initial grey scale. I feel like the fish net stockings could use a little work. it feels like your piece flattened out after you added color. I voted for you because it was a solid concept.
B-man::great composition, and i like how you did two characters. your sketch was great. the bat behind the girl looks like its floating. the muscle on the guys right arm(our left) looks out of place and/or is connected to the bone in the wrong spot. you got my vote because this is a good concept and I understood yourinitial idea from the begining sketch.
dranyer::great anatomy, love the weapon and costume. the free hugs is very funny. I really liked your grey scale image, how did you do the color? did you use painter? or are you some genius with color filters in photo shop? the only crit i have is that she seems a bit more goth than anti fashion harajuku. great rendering, voted for you.
IDP::nice pose, great costume, love the bat with nails. the color of the blood being that pink seems to be distracting. if it were the blood red like on the ground it might pop the character more from the background. i think you nailed the character. vote!
JaneMag::i like your colors, but i have an issue with your pose. she doesnt look like she can weild her weapon. great idea for a weapon though. but it looks like shes dragging it. since it was a nicely rendered piece and the concept is there, i voted for yours. in the future try to think about how a warrior would be standing, how they would weild that massive weapon. maybe add some cracks or dings to it because its a weapon. i really do like your color theory, especially in the shoes. vote!
JanJager:: everything about this is wonderful except for one spot. the back neck-shoulder-jaw area is awkward. I think the anatomy is a bit off and I would ask a friend to pose and take some ref. other than that, this piece is balls awesome! the weapon, spring loaded? genius! and this warrior screams anti-fashion. VOTE!
Aly Fell::I really like the texture you established in the backgrounf, nice use of kanji as well. nailed the costuming and it was rendered very well. the one thing is, she doesnt look all that asian to me. i think its the nose.... either way its a very good concept. VOTE!
honorable mentions.
Videris::i love the idea, i wish you rendered it out further. one more layer of highlights would have made this character really pop.
Fallenangel::youre getting a lot better with your color and form. the bandaged leg is flat. i would pull ref. for that. If you boost the contrast of your image, turn your forms a bit more your image will go from looking colorful but flat to amazingly rendered. if you grey scale the image you'll probably see that a majority of it is in the same midtone value.
wish i could have competed in this round, I was sick as a dog all week. great work everyone.

Drayner: I really dig it. Your rendering, pose and lighting is great. I feel like you could have really pushed the costuming accessories and taken this to a whole-nother level.
JanJager: I would love some tips on the way you render. Your transparent areas a absolutely beautiful. I am partial to the crispness (while I do appreciate the more painterly feeling you put in the Barbarella version). I also love the differing hues in your skin....you have a follower now! (hope that didn't come off creepy!!!!!)

CrookedHorn: thanks, i painted it in Photoshop, most of the color was done with curves adjustment layers and then i painted opaquely over that to further refine and render.
ThreeNineteen: glad you like it, and thanks for the crit :)

Thanks for crit and pointing the jaw out. Very helpful when someone looks at ones stuff with fresh eyes.
ThreeNineteen
Thanks for the kind words. I wish I had some really great tips on rendering. I trying to learn. And I think this forum is a excellent way of improving and have fun.
To work in the computer gives a lot of tools for example in phoptoshop. To make a transparent object is quit easy since you can work on a layer on top of the drawing.
You can erase and add new colours, adjust the layer duplicate it and so on.
I have been doing some traditional drawing before. and I am very found of those things. Things that is very hard traditional but easy in computer graphics like adding patterns.
Sometimes I think this takes over and I forget about the overall composition.
I use work on several layer sometimes adding a new sometimes copying the current and work on. Then merging them when they get needless they tend to bee to many otherwise.
I think the different modes on the brush Is a very helpful to the multiply mode, colour dodge mode , colour mode, etc. You probably know all this but that's my experiences while working digitally.
When It comes to differing hues in skin. I feel like I'm on thin ice every time. There is some guys in here really good at it.
I get often confused there is some things to have in mind. The skin is very reflecting and takes up a lot of colour from its soundings.
I think it always had to bee painted in relation to the sounding colours. Even if its white paper.
The skin also differs in hue in different parts of the body, more red on the cheeks, more blue above the eyes, more white in the palms of the hands etc.
And there are also different hues in all individuals from very dark to almost white. I think studying ref pictures or if possible real people is a great way of learning.
