E.O.W. Rnd #153: Guest host: matt kohr - The Captain's Private Quarters
Topic & briefing presented by the winner of EOW Round 151 matt kohr! :yayca:
The Captain's Private Quarters
Every ship has a captain - directing with unquestioned authority. One place provides them refuge from this dire role: their personal quarters.
You can tell a lot about someone by the way they decorate their bedroom. Do they collect art, records? Grow houseplants? What is the lighting like? Whether you depict a Sci-Fi battle-cruiser or a historical galleon, try to envision the human side of your stoic Captain, and decorate accordingly.

Like the topic, will try to set time aside for this one..
of to get pen and paper
December 4th, 2010, 08:32 PM
Haven't been here for a while. Homework is killing me so I have to miss out all the eow-fun :( Still I had to get away from my homework for a short time so I sketched this room.
I think I won't have time to finish it but creating ideas is also a lot of fun so here it goes:
' A napoleon-like war general with interest in art and culture' - i could add more stuff in his room and make it a bit more cozy but that would cost to much time.
So good luck everyone!
December 5th, 2010, 02:41 PM
Benza and artiphats looking forward to your contribution.
December 5th, 2010, 10:41 PM
I kind of-- went historical and fantasy with this
December 6th, 2010, 03:30 AM
Absorber Great composition, its great looking captains room. I can tell he likes what most seafarers like. Can't wait to see it in glorious colour. :D
JanJager Loving the underwater theme, i'm getting some bioshockness from the bottom right thumb, do you know which one you're going to work on? I think my favs are the top right and the middle bottom. I'm really getting a sense of what they think when they look at their surroundings.
twentyone I'm definitely getting some steampunk from this one. Maybe its just the tones that are influencing that, anyway looks great will be good to see the little details that make these quarters unique to the captain that resides there.
I'm thinking of doing some type of technospaceviking quarters. Not exactly sure yet...
Edit: Ohhh maaan i just noticed that the new CHOW is viking themed. Freaky coincidence. S: Now im not sure whether I should do vikings. Although that does mean more extensive research.
December 6th, 2010, 04:37 AM
i drew some studies / designs of a pirateship and a pirate. I really like the brief but still not making any decisions yet, except that i want to give it a pirate theme. check here the video of drawing the pirate
December 6th, 2010, 05:24 AM
Here's my attempt at a space viking in his spaceships quarters. Weapons, naked women sculptures, blood, skulls. He has everything a viking would ever want. He sits at his throne awaiting his next crusade. The techno part comes into the colour.
Silly i didn't notice that the current CHOW is viking themed, a creepy coincidence. Maybe they'll work in hand. :D
Also thanks for the video post JellevdVegt
And JanJager How do you get time to enter all these competitions? Madness!
December 6th, 2010, 06:57 AM
I´m going to try to tell the story of James Patapoulos, who lost his wife in a journey in the sea, since then lives in a abbandoned Factory, where he dreams that he is a great captain, he has made a ilusion world around him, gathering and collecting things that somehow combined, in his imagination, turn into things of his ship. All in a single draw!!!
Hard task, please give me some ideas.
This is my tribute to the film the King Fisher and Terry Gillian.
December 6th, 2010, 10:21 AM
If you render what u got allready I bet u will be allmost home.
Maby a testdummy with a costume that sort of fits his state of mind, and perhaps a chandalier.. ohh and fabricsand a hanging bed, and .. hmm well.. maby thats enough.. like I said I think your well on your way on your own.
December 6th, 2010, 01:00 PM
vitribius:cant wait to see it rendered
December 6th, 2010, 01:57 PM
December 6th, 2010, 01:59 PM
Jaunay- Thanks a bunch, Jaunay. I think that's a pretty cool topic you picked :)
JellevdVegt - very cool stuff man
Vitrubius- very good perspective, i agree I think i'm waiting for how it renders, haha.
Absorber- keep it up dude :)
JanJager- when did you win so many icons?? nice
I sharpened and fixed the perspective.
December 6th, 2010, 07:39 PM
That's great. You got it all there. The stars. Have participated in to many resiliently.
Beautiful sketch and good background story. What about a sextant, earth globe, lifebuoy
Nice take to have the Viking themed. You can have a plenty of cool stuff in there. Thanks for the crit. My entering in all these competitions. Its so fun but I spending to much time in here. I probably need some kind of help.
My excuse is that it is so instructive to see what artists all over the world comes up with.
Nice sketch. Are you going for a overview?
December 7th, 2010, 11:16 AM
great start everyone, here is my take on this, hope I got some time for details and colors...
December 7th, 2010, 04:11 PM
JanJager: I really love the mood of the middle bottom thumb and the composition really conveys the weight of the ocean on the captain
Vitrubius: Perhaps if you rendered the ship elements more softly it would give them an ethereal quality, giving the sense that its an illusion. Otherwise its a fantastic sketch.
hopefully I can start on something in a few days...
December 7th, 2010, 06:05 PM
Has a question, cause i think my colouring skills stink..
can one leave it at just a ink-drawing. I like it myself, but not sure about what other think.
How do u work out shadows in colour.. argghhhhh..
December 7th, 2010, 06:29 PM
Awesome. Must make time and finish this one on time!
December 7th, 2010, 06:58 PM
So after reading the CHow brief I've modified my design a little, he's a bit more brutal, have to admit i was listening to Amon Amarth at the time so maybe that helped.
I haven't done a piece like this ever so please where there are mistakes or things that look odd please give me a hoi.
I was without the internet for a a day and it;s surprising how much work i get done without distractions. Hah.
One of my real life critiquers said that it looks a little boring and im afraid ive chosen a bad composition so making it unboring may be hard considering how far i've progressed. What do you guys think?
December 7th, 2010, 07:42 PM
Thanks all, very valuabe comments, I have included many of them, still try to work all the scene in a more general way, when I realized I was painting the candles..
I don´t know if I´m going to make the windows more transparent or in colors.
Perhaps it´s difficult to point the message between so many things, perhaps I should have take a narrower poit of view. Any way I´m having a good time working on it. This is right now...
December 7th, 2010, 08:31 PM
Benza Great linework, I'm not sure about the rules for submitting non coloured works, but im sure you submit full ink works if you hatch the colouring in with your pens. But if you do want to colour yours in digitally i recommend putting your lines at the top and multiplying the line art layer so the lines are ontop of the colours but the colours still come through, this way you wont loose your great line details.
Vitrubius It's looking great so far, I'm loving the colours you've chosen very moody. What are you fighting about with it? There's isnt really too much to critique, except that its a little busy and remember to lead people's eyes to where you want them to look, at the moment my eyes are all over the place. Also I think you lost a bit of the magic that the lines had, but maybe that's just me.
android411 This is looking great i love the reflected floors and the maps on the table. Not sure about critique but the room looks a little hexagonal, i think the angle of the walls, bed and the gallows windows do that. But it may be intentional, oh well it' s just something i picked up.
Great work everyone so far. <3
December 8th, 2010, 04:31 AM
vitribius, i would advise to use a multiply layer and keep your lines. Now you loose all the effort and magic you had in your initial sketch
December 9th, 2010, 11:45 AM
here is an update of my image, did some quick coloring and added some textures,
thanks for your kind words Jaunay, I did not really think about the geometry of the quarter, just tried to create a large space with correct human proportions
December 9th, 2010, 04:08 PM
Traying to point out the main things with the light and the lines. The amount of colours intencionally low. Very happy with the result, for me this was unthinkable two years ago!!!
December 9th, 2010, 04:22 PM
JellevdVegt: I doubled the layer of the draw, so it gained intenstiy, perhaps too much.
Benza I hope you like!!!, I want to think that i´m a drawer who is learning to paint, but still my colors are all inside of the lines!!! Your colors are still very bright, give sense of depth, the air is as transparent as you want it to be, paint it.
Jaynuay, Give more sense of depth with the colors, desaturate the background.
Android411Beautiful light and texture, you have really got it!!
December 10th, 2010, 12:45 AM
@vitrubius, what´s not to like, you use the colours well and the lines are where they should be.
as for my own painting I´m not so sure. I´ll for sure try and render it out but not sure how it will look.. but hey! it´s the learning thats most fun.. or?
December 11th, 2010, 03:06 AM
Sick stuff from everyone so far. Seems like this will have some fun results.Love the tribute Vitrubius!
My first thoughts. Want to do this treasure horde, something that shows the travels and plunders of a great sea captain.
December 11th, 2010, 06:23 AM
@ mbetteker: Great lightning. I like them both, the second one is more interesting I think but the first one has a lot of potential to fill it with awesome stuff.
@Vitrubius: I really like your concept. I think the concept could even compensate the painting if this part fails a bit. But the painting is going in the good direction. I think you should create a experimenting layer where you use bigger (maybe textured) brushes and try to catch a mood for the painting. Details could be drawn in later on. But you should watch out that you don't lose all your lovely details and stuff in the room because that's what makes this picture even better. Hmm I contradict myself again.. Keep it up!
@Android411: Your mood is great, I think the colors are a bit odd. Maybe it's because I love black&white but as for the mood I think your previous at post 16 is better. And maybe you could hang some things around the railing in front to get more detail and story in your image. I think the front feels a bit empty and to be honest the hanging cables in your prev post are better imo. Good luck!
@Jaunay: Your composition is indeed a bit boring, but I have the same straight on compo haha. But instead of changing the composition (which will result in a total startover) you could add a more suggestive element. Maybe the 'in-a-weird-pose-zombie-like-creature' :P could come out of a smoke screen. Everything is quite in your face so this makes it a little less dramatic and exciting.
Still a great job so keep it up!
@Benza: Great linedrawing. I know how you feel about the coloring ;) But at least you tried. I think that first start with drawing under your lines (set the lines-layer in Multiply mode) can be a lot easier. And you should watch out with the fussiness of your lines. Start using a sharper edge. So just start coloring under your lines, it will help to understand the coloring process a bit more I think.
@twentyone: A great mood and setting! Great composition. Can't wait to see more of this one!
@Jelle: Great drawing of a pirate, nice highlights and details on the outfit. Are you going to create an environment with this man or are you going for the back of the ship design as a final? Oh and I'm not so fond of the corner-decoration, it kills the illustration a bit. But that's more something personal. Keep it up!
@JanJager: Very nice thumbs. I like the design in your first but the composition is a bit dull. I also like the second story but the mood in the third is the best I think.
Can't wait to see more!
- Seeing all these entries makes me wanna paint in my sketch. Hopefully I can find some time today to start off. Good luck everyone!
December 12th, 2010, 04:34 PM
Details are a pain, but here's what I have right now.. keep up the sick stuff.1120456
December 12th, 2010, 10:42 PM
Great work everybody
December 12th, 2010, 11:15 PM
December 13th, 2010, 02:32 AM
xinranliu, have you used open canvas before?
December 13th, 2010, 06:35 PM
I think your details are coming along fine. Your highlights in the roof and the details are awesome. Are you using photo's to overpaint or just as a texture as overlay? It feels painterly and photorealistic at the same time, and more important, it feels balanced. My images tend to look to photocollage-like very fast when I use photo's.
Don't focus to much on the design of the bed. I know designing complex stuff could be very cool but once your composition isn't convincing your design do no good. So change the composition/angle a bit and I think the image will become a lot more interesting. Your colors are realistic though, good job!
@Jan. Nice one! I do think that your texture on the glass is a bit to heavy. I think seeing more of those animals would be cool.
Oh and try to balance the focal point, I think because the roof structure is very sharp my first focus goes to the structure. Not the animals and also not to the room. Maybe you could make those lines a bit more sketchy or the overall a bit more sharp. Hope you know what I mean :)
Your mood is getting down fine and I like it!
- Don't know if I have the time to paint. I'm finally done with school and from today I got some sort of a holiday but still my days are fully planned haha. Maybe wednesday night and otherwise up to the next eow!
December 13th, 2010, 09:27 PM
Great work evrybody.
Great harmonic feeling in the colour. Perhaps add some more captain stuff.
Its grate. Cant give any crit.
Very nice thumbs. I like the second a little bit more. Think it is a bit more interesting in design. Even thou I like the valve feeling in the first.
I love the feeling. Why not have a slight glow around the moon.
Nice take on the subject. I like the statues. I think you can clean up the rendering a bit more.
Great ink-drawing. I think at this point some got lost in the colouring. Why not have the ink-drawing as a overly so you keep the lines and have the colours under.
Perhaps focus the intensity in the colours to the middle of the picture and let them loosen up in the edges of the picture to have a more clear focus.
I struggle with shadows in colour to. My shadows tend to be black Gray and boring. I think one way of give more life to them is to think in warm and could colours to find the colour of the shadow. And of course look at reefs.
Nice sunset feeling. I am little surprised you didn't let the planks in the floor go more away from the viewer. But it works. The handrail in the foreground looks a bit week .why not give it some decorations.
You showing the thickness of the walls very nice in the door opening, but in the windows to the left the wall seems much thinner.
I know this is a detail. And overall I like it.
Thanks for the crit. I understand exactly what you mean. I am to found of patterns.
Hope I got time to take away the roof pattern and go over the structure in the roof. I does not work at all.
December 14th, 2010, 10:25 AM
Great works! Here's my take, it's my first here.
December 14th, 2010, 11:04 AM

I'm working on this right now:
December 14th, 2010, 02:34 PM
"The proud captain and founder of holy crap tours, only employed mad mad people, since all the tours took place deep within hostile alien territory."
I might join in :D
December 14th, 2010, 07:55 PM
thanks everyone for the comments, so here is my designated final, I changed the color scheme and added some details
JanJager - great mood, I´d loved to have such a view
eronzki999 - very nice mood, maybe I would try to reinforce the light sources more
everyone else great work too
December 14th, 2010, 09:53 PM
twentyone: yes, I don't think I see the relevance but why?
December 15th, 2010, 03:25 PM
This is my final :):
December 15th, 2010, 06:54 PM

Don't know if I will have time to finish this or not. I want to start doing EOWs again anyways.
December 16th, 2010, 09:15 AM
Got a sci fi concept Ill try get done in time. A question tho, will there be a finals thread or like last time were Vulgar collected the pieces into the thread?
December 16th, 2010, 09:23 AM
lyno's my favorite, nice atmosphere. i wonder, till when do i still have time to submit something? i have a sketch and an idea but still no time to work on it until now. so i could potentially work on it still but dont know when the poll/final thread goes up. can anyone clear this out for me?
December 16th, 2010, 09:57 AM
WHY DO I READ these things so late :'( ive done thumbnails fffffffffffff
December 16th, 2010, 09:58 AM
Thanks! I think the final thread will be made on Friday. I think I red somewhere (FAQ?) that the thread with the finals are made on a Friday. So I guess you have till 23u59 today.
December 16th, 2010, 10:00 AM
hurry! to the exceptionally slow drawing board! ffffff thanks lyno.
I love a lot of the pieces so far..but theyre all a tad predictable for my personal preference D:
December 16th, 2010, 11:25 AM
Started waaay too late, not sure if I will have the time to finish it. :painting:
Design&comp are crap, was focusing more on colors.

It looks really nice. If you're short on time, just tighten up some of the edges and sketchy bits on the right side, and call it done. Good work!
December 16th, 2010, 12:26 PM
damn, so that means i have only tonight/? (i live in the netherlands) im not nearly finished. i really feel this piece and it would suck if i miss the deadline.. ooh well
December 16th, 2010, 12:38 PM
i like your avatar,JellevdVegt, and holy hell i rarely see so many perspective lines in a base sketch o_o maybe thats where im going wrong ^^
December 16th, 2010, 03:11 PM
Heres my contribution. Posting a smaller version for overview and a bigger for details.
Explanation; the captains private quarter are located in the midst of the ship (see the biggest window) but is also enlarged in the rocket fire.
December 16th, 2010, 05:12 PM
My entry, as you can see I didn´t have the time to finish it the way the draw and all of you deserve.:davi: Anyway hope you like it, I enjoyed myself a lot at the beginning, and desperate at the end, (damn work!!!).:lounge:
The place is a mix betwen sadness, magic, guiltyness and crazyness.
Janjager: Beautiful scene, very sugestive, if I make a house for me i would like to built a room like that ,thanks for the idea of the ball.
Xinranliu: Looked a little bit poor in the concept at the beginning, but what a good painter you are!!! Really i like the light of the room.
Lyno: That´s more my way of seen the concept, beautiful lighthing.
Erzonki: Very well painted, check the perspective, the lines help a lot, take care of them, the painting is so good that deserves some more work in the draw, ( The opposite happens to me!!)
JellevdVegt: I´m beggining to experimentate with the perspective in the way you are doing it, I´m very interested in your draw, please finish it!!!
Formic Acid: I love the space sci fi point of view, very original!!!
Ragnj:This draw is so original and has a lot of power... I don´t have nothing to say but good things of your work.

Sometimes metal and grime and the noise of machinery can be just as inspiring as soft wood inlay. Hope you like.
