ROUND #223 :: Barbarella

DESCRIPTION

Barbarella

Barbarella is the main character of a science fiction comic by Jean-Claude Forest, dating back to 1962. Barbarella was a sexy young woman who travelled through the galaxy to have many (sexy) adventures. In 1968 a campy movie was made starring Jane Fonda as Barbarella. The comic caused a bit of a scandal because of its slightly erotic content. However, the comic was also regarded as part of the sexual revolution, and Barbarella as an embodiment of the modern, free woman.

kept it very simple this time around. when i think campy,i think 80's. and when i think 80's i think big hair. so that's that.

This is it... my ultimate feedback!

Bluki: I loved everything this one: The idea, design, and style. It's a shame the manga style doesn't have many fans around here.

Niva: I liked your Barb more with the little devils, they gave a more campy feeling to your piece. Good colouring and design, I didn't like very much the face and hair, but that's imo.

Angel Itheuk: It's nice for a cartoony style, very Marilyn Monroe looking. Is she riding a giant dildo? Omg.

CrookedHorn: This one is just fantastic: the colouring, the composition, the anatomy, hair, the pierced penis, and the background with even more penis! Totally amazing.

Malakuko: The concept and composition are quite good, but I see lots of issues with their anatomy: the angel's head is much bigger than Barbarella's, and I don't see his right arm :/ Maybe you should try more references with human bodies.

LJS: Your giant Barbarella is a special one. Though I dind't like the concept at all, I must admit your final piece is really good. Specially the colouring and background.

Ostrander: Nice drawing, but the oversaturated yellows and reds kinda ruin it. I think it would have worked well without that high saturation.

Enbe: Another nice cartoony style, this was my favourite so far. The design of the costume is just excellent.

Kafka Dreams: You've got some nice drawing skills, but no offense, you've got to practice more with photoshop. Just a question, have you got a Wacom ( or something similar )? Cause your piece looks like it was coloured with the mouse :/

Rosco: Even for a cartoony style, your Barbarella is a little out of shape. You should have study more the proportions before the painting. Just my opinion : )

Gloomybunny: Imo the black of your Barbarella's suit ruined the piece. Blacks are not always black, specially if it's latex or something like that. Latex reflects almost everything. The hair is little flat too. But I liked the design.

Mincx: I don't know what to say about yours :/ you should study proportions and anatomy before painting a complicated piece : )

JessiBean: This one is really good too. Your Barbarella looks really sexy and proportioned, but she's got a very "Choni" looking ( here in Spain we call them like that... it's basicaly this type of woman: http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/2113/lydia1gd.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ITOZ28PZDFw/S-KtK6Tr4yI/AAAAAAAAAAM/vw1oQyWfees/s1600/pbn3d3oea0n5dfvyxb4b6892c91537f_inmaculada-contreras-gh7.jpg ._. )
It's because of that I don't finally liked it. Sorry, I'm a bad feedbacker : (

Liv: Nice painting and design. Imo your Barbarella looks too thick and rude.

L-A Fairy: I don't want to sound offensive, but you've got very much to learn, dear padawan. Specially with proportions and anatomy. Use references whenever you can. The colouring looks a little flat too. Don't give up, keep on working on it.

Reginanegra: This one's really good too. The pose is very dynamic and sexy. Maybe the design of the costume is a little simple.

PxlSlayer: Really nice piece! I loved the colours, the design, and specially the face. She's very pretty and realistic. Good work!

Brambor: Nice design, a little flat colouring imo.

Quinn Simmoes: I loved this one, but as I said, it was too dark for the Barbarella topic. Good work anyway.

Naaaq: I don't know what to say about this either : / the design is too flat for my taste.

SeaBlossom: Nice concept, and composition, you should work more on propotions and anatomy.

Emerging: Amazing colours and design. Her skin is stunning, and the angel is just perfect. Keep up the good work!

Richart: You did a nice design. I didn't liked really much her face, but that's just my opinion.

JanJager: As I said, absolutely lovely.

Lemming clone: I still see some issues with her legs and feet. Also the colouring looks a little flat.

Vineris: Nice style, you did a good work with that exotic Barbarella.

Lianti: Totally stunning piece. Your colouring skills are just amazing. Just a little criticism, your skin tones makes her look like she was made of plaster or something like that xD

Thélema: holy piece of crap! ahaha :P

Carnifex: A little simple for my taste. But you did a really good job with the design and hair : D

Gosh I'm so tired! I apologize If I offended someone, is not my intention, I just want to be as constructive as I can.

So many great entries this week. My votes went to..

Jessibean: Top stuff, as usual. Would love to see you entering more often tho Jessi, makes me sad that you only do girly designs :( Either that or we need more girly chows.

Crookedhorn: The anatomy, the imagery (oo-err) and quality are all in there. great piece.

Quinn Simoes: Nice to see that there are still some character designs being entered for chow - and this one is great.

Thank you for the crit, Thelema. I seem to have trouble with my color saturation. On my cintiq it looks fine, but once I see it on the web it looks really garish. I've been trying to fix it but have been having difficulty trying to get it resolved. If anyone reads this and has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks again for your helpful critique. :)

Try viewing on another monitor and then adjust your curves etc in Photoshop after your piece is finished.
All monitors display colour differently - My macbook pro for example because of its LCD screen is really washed out.

Personally though - I like highly saturated drawings like yours ;) My style is also pretty bright hehe.

Great topic and I enjoyed working on it though I didn't have time to finish my initially planned piece. Anyways I have a couple things to say:

Crookedhorn: You NAILED it. Not just the topic but the drawing itself. When I first saw it I thought Frazetta both because of the shapes and the paining style. Your penis creature reminded me of the mount of the ninja assassins from the Wizards animation (classic stuff which was also Frazetta inspired btw.) Really your drawing is one of the best I've ever seen posted here. I know the voting's close but in my eyes you're awesomeness!

Pixslayer: Voted for you too because I liked your initial design. IMO the final was a bit flat but you did good by the topic. WHen I say flat I seriously thought you'd put more realistic work into the whole piece overall after the initial concept. More work on shading, coloring and especially the tentacles. Still good job overall.

Lianti: I liked her, very pretty girl got my vote.

Emerging: Really liked your work once again so I voted. In your case I also thought you'd press this more. Wanted to see more contrast, show more of the characters, and the gun didn't work for me. This work definitely had the not quite finished feeling to me and I know how awesome your creature designs are!

QuinnSimoes: Absolutely voted though your piece totally didn't fit the topic (sorry but imho it just doesn't.) What it lacked in terms of Barbarella it made up for originality, the character design is real with you and I can't help but vote for it because I like dark powerful looking characters like the one you've created. Please take part more often, really enjoyed it. Oh and the critter was awesome too.

not to diminish crookedhorn's entry, but i honestly don't see the big buzz around it. as an illustration it's nice, but as a character design,it's pretty much red sonja with a penis alien.

voted for jessi and pxlslayer, i thought all the entries were great but these 2 stood out for me. jessi's partly because i really felt that her illustration captured a campy feely type character and was really entertaining to look at as well as pxl's!

IMO the final was a bit flat but you did good by the topic. WHen I say flat I seriously thought you'd put more realistic work into the whole piece overall after the initial concept

i'm not sure i agree in the sense that it fell a bit flat, when i look back at most of the chow's that pxl's has done, his work in terms of anatomy and forms rendered are one of the best in those aspects relative to other entries as well as for this chow, and the tentacles, i think they were done exceptionally well, with a more stylistic simplified rendering to convey it but not distract from the main objective which in this case is a character design sketch

not to diminish crookedhorn's entry, but i honestly don't see the big buzz around it

i feel that crooked did a really excellent job on this and captured a really beautiful campy illustration, especially with the hues and rustic kind of moodiness caputred! only reason why i didn't vote for his was that it seems more emphasis placed on the creature portion than the character itself where some of the anatomy and proportions were a tad wonky, other than that i thought it was a really great composition

not trying to start a flame war here but just chiming in my 2 cents on the wonderful work done this round, great job all!

Thélema - Thank you for your kind comments, I do try to broaden my style, but for these kind of thing (since there are no restriction in style) I use my 'default' style which I'm comfortable most, cheers.

also I'll try to comment all of the entry later :)

You can tell which artists understand the essence of Barbarella and which ones don't. She was clumsy, not a very good fighter, "innocent", friendly and got herself into a lot of trouble. I voted for the characters who got closest to fulfilling that.

She's not a bad-ass fighter, so even though there were some great illustrations, I couldn't in good conscience vote for them because they weren't Barbarella. I personally don't like when Hollywood takes a charming character and "mondernizes" them (meaning turns them too cool and tough and loses who the character is). As an example, I absolutely LOVE canaan02's illustration, but she is waaaaaay too tough and capable to be Barbarella. Most of the fun of Barbarella was from the ridiculous situations she got into because she was so in over her head most of the time. This girl looks like she could handle any situation (by shooting it or kicking its ass) and that just doesn't scream Barbarella to me.
