ROUND #222 :: Steampunk Superhero

DESCRIPTION

Steampunk Superhero

This week’s challenge will be all about designing an interesting character with both steampunk and superhero characteristics. Both influences must be recognizable in the final design, but you are completely free to think of what kind of superpowers your character will have. To give a few guidelines:

A superhero is a type of character possessing "extraordinary or superhuman powers" and dedicated to protecting the public and has some visual characteristic (typically an outfit) that makes him/her identifiable. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superhero)

Steampunk is a genre that involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century and often Victorian era Britain—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk)

Design a steampunk superhero!

Think of an appropriate name for your superhero!
Make it an iconic character, recognizable, it’s a superhero after all :)

Good luck!

Alright! Exciting theme this week! I'll start off by gathering some inspiration:

More difficult than I thought.
Giving him/ her a feeling of both, superhero AND steampunk isnt easy. My first sketches looked more like some kind of steam punk cyborg.

And the googles are THE element so far ^^ They are so unique for that time.

God start. Perhaps have some space in front of the superhero

Cool picture. I like the stem. Perhaps put some highlights in the brass and iron details.

I like the idea of a man made of steam called "the Ether" but then I just remind myself of the bprd Krauss character >_>

Then there's the idea of a dude with a coat patterned with pocket watches and an hourglass logo/mechanism on his chest.

someone made of fire powering his own steampunk exosuit?

it's hard not to be obvious here :P

Paolo13

This time i will try and keep it simple....I hope.

JaneMag
November 15th, 2010, 02:21 PM
xLouisax: My thoughts exactly when I first read the description. ;)
Paolo13: That's one manly design! :P

Personally I have a design in mind inspired by the Balance professor in Wizard101. I'll call my superhero Mr. Doggytail.

Urötskidoji
November 15th, 2010, 02:40 PM
I´ve stole a little idea from the Steamboy anime.

My character rides a big metal wheel or cog, which he guides with his supersensative balancingskills. The wheel/cog is both his means of transportation and his weapon, as he can launch it at his enemies with devastating results!

http://i55.tinypic.com/14m9hjm.jpg

No real idea about the look of the superhero himself, but perhaps something soldier-looking?

Paolo13
November 15th, 2010, 02:48 PM
Thanx Janemag, but I can not keep things simple, I must be sick inside LOL

HAHAHA I understan now why you say manly.

Fun topic! Great work so far too!
Here is my sketch I did this evening, nothing super original :) Any critique is much appreciated. I just realized it isn't much of a super hero about her, no superpowers to talk about. I might change that so there is something more super natural about her.

Took me ages, my second version.
I'm still not really into drawing with a tablet.

His name is "Dr. Ravenclaw" which is obviously because of his big mechanical Ravenclaw that he has attached instead of his right hand. The device on his back allows him to shoot his hand at his enemies or use it as a climbhook. The claw is link to his armstump with a chain so he can get the claw back.
This device works very fast, so he has no disadvantages when his claw is not on his hand.

His left hand is modified, too, but I didnt invent it's functions yet :)

xLouisax
November 15th, 2010, 06:56 PM
Janemag omg are you playing Fable at the moment? :o

Well I realllly like Steampunk so I'm going to squeeeze this chow in somehow, and I'm going for the chick with pretty clothes and a gun!

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u43/louisasasa/Steampunkbrainstorm.jpg
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u43/louisasasa/Firstcostumes2.jpg

I still need to put a little thought into making my character more obviously steampunk (chuck some metal in there!) and also, I need to make her look more superhero-ey.

This is a great topic. I feel like creating a whole damn team of steampunk superheroes. Here are two concepts I'm toying with, both relying heavily on the idea that Iron Man is actually a superhero, despite not having superpowers per se. :er: The Tin Soldier is on the left, The Robber Baron on the right.

Good work so far everyone.
Here's my take so far, my character is a scout type, those 6 flying orbs are his sight extensions, he can receive up to 6 extra visual informations at one time:
1102650
Still am not sure about the background. I may also still have to work his steampunk-ness more (in costume perhaps) before putting in colours. Need feedback on that and his anatomy too.

I was thinking about creating some kind of steam punk iron man.
And after 4h of work I'm not sure if I like the design.
Maybe I'll start again another time.
Don't have the name yet.
Anyway.

Koh - Very cool man!!! Looks badass. I really liked the composition.

Urötskidoji - Very good composition too man. I really liked the movement. Although I can't really talk about the design yet. But I liked the giant wheel vehicle.

reginanegra - Very rocketeer-like. I would change a little. Maybe you should try to create a new design for his flying machine. Maybe a huge device.

JaneMag - Thank you for the pictures!!! =D

Paolo13 - Damn!!! That last piece was excellent!!! Cant wait to see the final piece. I just love battle scenes.

alexson - Cool design so far. Very hot girl.

Tawnos - the design is good, but the pose is too simple. You should try to draw him in a more interesting pose.

xLouisax - the third girl (the first from the right side) is my favorite one. Looks like some kind of pirate femme fatale girl.

LA-Fairy - The outfit looks good. But what is her power? You should try to finish.

caanan02 - sorry man, I couldnt see your image.

Smolin - really cool designs man. I like the baron most. the hat is priceless.

Lianti - I like the girl! The guy is too exaggerated for me. The design of her armor is pretty cool.

witcrack - Great design. I liked the description. The character shows potential. I liked his facial expression too. hehe

snootchy - The running guy looks a little more cyberpunk than steampunk but looks awesome anyway. I would try this one.

Smolin - Nice armor man. Originally I tried to make a armor such as yours. Only later a changed for a bigger machine.

Lots of cool ideas so far. This should be an interesting week.

I'm playing around with a Batman inspired character but with steam powered mechanical wings (probably a little overambitious but what the heck).

Coming up with a name is proving to be quite difficult as all the really cool ones like Hawkman, Bird of Prey, Falcon etc have been done so I think I'll settle for the Winged Avenger, who er.. swoops down on crime :er:

(Smolin - love the idea of Tin Soldier and Captain Industry)

IDP: Great idea and sketch. I like the heaviness of the boots. How about Iron Angel?

Niva: I like her so far, but she looks more sci-fi than steampunk. I don't think the leotard is doing much for her. If you want to keep her legs bare, maybe look up some Victorian lingerie?

Shez: Great design! Very steampunk and heroic. The gear behind his head makes him look almost religious. His hips are a bit slim, though.

JanJager: I love it. The Flying Kaiser.

Witcrack: Anatomy looks good to me so far, and the concept & sketch is excellent. Do more!

Snootchy: Great sketches! I'm really feeling Sureshot.

Hellfire: That is dope! I love it.

xLouisax
November 16th, 2010, 10:56 AM
ShehZ Nice work, give him some awesome boots and he'll be complete!

Niva Yours is looking awesome. If I were to be a nit-picker, the only thing I would say is that it's a little on the futuristic side rather than steampunk. What I mean is alot of her gear looks very futuristic. But of course its up to you how closely you want to follow Steampunk :)

Ethankarnop That's amazing, why are you leaving it? :(

Parsakoira That's a really strong pose, can't wait to see it develop

Caanan02 That's so awesome so far! It screams steampunk!

Reginanegra Yeah I think his hand would be an open palm towards us, more comfortably than how you've drawn it. And you could have the little metal thing on his hand tied to his arm instead, so that it retracts secretly across his palm - like a stealth knife! (sorry that probably dosen't make any sense!)

my first quick scribble, gonna have to re-work him, as 1) he has too much costume going on, need to trim down, and 2) already several posts that look similar... also, thinkin of a duo or team... prolly wont get done it in time, but i have a day job so....

aaaand i just realized that there's no hands or feet visible, and big leather boots & gloves are kinda mandatory I think... plus comp, background, lighting... arg!

Started with cool colors and Darks. I'll Lighten it up when I've got all my forms. She's got a Frost engine. Was going for a Mrs. Freeze kinda thing. From looking at the other work I feel like I'm missing mark by a bit I will work on putting in some rivets and natural leather and get rid of some of the sharp edges. I think she's to much of a tomboy to where embrodery.. maybe she's a lesbian in 18th century europe.. that could explain a few things.

When i think about stampunk i first think crossing my mind are clocks so...
I feel like I was kind of inspired by Dexter tv series, especially the words: tick, tock, tick, tock, that's the sound of your life running out. Like superhero trying to save somebody before the time will run out sort of thing:)

Hello, here we go again :) Kinda got inspired by Rumble (the little casette robot) from Transformers with his big thumpers. So here is my take on this with some steampowered thumpers. I guess calling her Thumper would be a bit to obvious so I have to think of a name still. I'm kinda looking for the iconic two-coloured superhero suit with victorian laces and all as decorations. Especially made a brush for that, works like a charm :) The thumpers are simple 3d-shapes I actually made in Illustrator with the revolve-tool. Having loads of fun already.

This is the Blacksmith, the superhero's best asset. He creates all the weapons for the steampunk superheros.

He's not looking too steampunky at the moment, I think a lot comes though the colours. He will be holding a gun eventually.

Bear in mind this is my first attempt at a CHOW comp (:

Hey hey everyone! Couldn't resist on this idea and since I've always wanted to work on something Steampunky I thought this would be a good opportunity.

Trying to stay away from the usual here so I'm thinking a character that looks more like a Train Engineer. Cole Train would be a great name but I feel like that's been done recently (sarcasm).

To help sell the steampunk aspect, I have to think of some equipment for him and at the moment I think the idea of a kind of 'animal' companion could work. I was thinking Paul Bunyan but instead of lumber, he scoops coal, and instead of a big ox he has a giant mechanical steampunk bear (or gorilla).

Loving some of the ideas thrown down so far, everyone. keep it up!

Hellfire: thanks dood, yea i was thinking the exact same thing, not sure why but something about the mohawk and overcoats kinda reminds of ghost in the shell, maybe it was back in my mind, i really dig ur character, kind of reminds me of wild wild west, where the doods riding the giant mech spider, the rustic hues are looking nice too!

smolin: i was thinking the same thing and thanks decided to go with sureshot, not the greatist idea, kind of spawned off the idea of deadshot but figured that way could incorporate some kind of steam weapon with the sketch! haha me too i feel ya too bad this wasn't a team chow where we could create a whole universe! i like the idea of tin soldier moreso, cuz there is a bit more of humanoid aspect to it and would be cool to delve into humanoids in steampunk era!

Urötskidoji: thnx mate, actually i decided to go with the gunner, i think it was looking a bit too cyberpunkish! i freakin luv that idea of wheeler, i really like that idea of incorporating some type of machinery transport with the characters, looking forward to seeing how that fleshes out!

some quick updates the character i decided to go with and a possible backdrop shooting for a backlit explosion type thing, will get to crits after work tomorrow...

haha i found this funny quote when I was researching steampunk:

It depends more on what the character does as opposed to what he / she looks like. This is why it's important to try and have an element of storytelling in a painting, so people get a sense of how the character would fit into his world, besides the way they look. Looks can be deceiving, after all :)

MincX: She's got some proportion problems going on. Her head is way too big -- I count her as 6 heads tall. And I think her left shoulder comes out too far: think about where the arm inserts into the torso. It should be a bit further in toward the chest. Other than that, I think the concept is looking good so far!

Obviously still some work to do! Still finishing up the sketch even. I can't help but sometimes get carried away with other things! Will eventually add the brassy or gunmetal coloring.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments above that she's too sci-fi rather than steampunk. I've tried to give her some steam gears and chimey stacks but I'll definitely work on more details to make it a bit more steampunkish.

Here's the next WIP, I've not had much time to work on this at all, hopefully more tonight.

Still WIP!

I got the idea when I saw a steampunk wheelchair, but I decided to take it in a different direction. So our spunky heroine lost her legs in a tragic cart accident when she was young, but decides to build herself machine propulsion that lets her run faster and jump farther than any normal being. reginanegra: i like it so far, i think the pose is a bit static or symmetrical but overall like the design, will u be adding more gadgets? think it could use a bit more steampunk elements...

koh: looking good really like that focus of that arm piece, the arm armor kind of reminds me of scryed anime series

JanJager: like the expression on the doods face, if ur going with an aviator sort of character be cool to see some more aviator accessories along with the character...

Paolo13: the forms and mood set looks great, although i think ur character is looking a bit sci-fi'ish, reminds me of that opera singer in the 5th element...

alexson: great sketch, maybe instead of her using weapons maybe she has like geomancer powers where she can like control the land, i see a really cool illustration developing around that pose where rocks are levitating upwards of the ground...

Tawnos: really dig the claw hand weapon idea, keep pushing it, is that his super power the claw hand or is he a really smart inventor?

xLouisax: cool thumbs of designs, just wondering what her superhero power will?

LA-Fairy: cool sketch got a bit of supergirl with some steamy elements, hope u get a chance a to push it further

caanan02: nice backdrop, was actually doing the background also separately, look forward to seeing how your character is going to setup in that cool enviro!

Lianti: boomba kicks major bootay! dig the color scheme, i'm not sure what it is, might be the right side breast plate sticking out that's throwing the characters orientation off. keep at it, my fav so far!

Witcrack: cool concept, like the idea of the floating eyes, i think in terms of anatomy it looks to me like ur going for a 3 point perspective view looking up at the character or looks that way to me, if that's the case the bottom half should be bigger than the upper torso, definitely use a perspective grid to see where ur character is sitting in space it will help loads

Niva: like the update and definitely not looking as scifi'ish, maybe add some more victorian setting type gadgets/outfit, since it seems like that was the era it seems to be based in based on my research so far for steampunk

ShehZ: great first post! I like the overall sketch, the only thing that i find a bit odd/funny with the pose is the way his hands are pointing inward, maybe better rolled up like a fist...

ethan karnopp: i really liked that first stab, i really wanted to do something playful like what u've shown in that first sketch, hope u'll stick with that style for this chow!

Parsakoira: sup dood, looking great, first thought was watchmen for some reason when i saw ur sketch even though there was no shooter but i really like the action shot, only crit is that it's looking a bit too mech'ish or like a bit like boba fett type of character...

Apfelschecke: great start, keep building up that sketch i think the wings would be a really nice focal point for that sketch

Lucyohlucy: definitely cool idea to involve all those gears in the clock and such, think some work on the anatomy proportions will help, the upper torso seems a bit too small compared to the legs...

Pixeltuner: awesome sketch really dig the domino eyes, kind of looking a bit more villainous right now but like the overall composition! (think i saw u starting to post over at sijun sp forum, not sure if that was u but if so cool mang!

Supervlieg: nice sketch, the front rocket pack looks a bit confusing, based on physics seems a bit like the way the two rocket packs are positioned would contradict one another...

Tahrinya: like the design of the outfit, pose is a bit static keep on working it!

EBrown: really like that animal companion and compliments the main character well, just remember to push ur main character so that he is not overshadowed by the supporting one

Onnophris: really dig all them little gadgets and elements of the design, keep on pushing it lookin good!

artiphats: cool gadgets as well, favorite part is that fan like protector on the elbow!

Vaejoun: hehe glad u pointed out colossus cuz that's what came to mind first glance at the sketch, maybe a bit more of powerful pose like hulk smash might be a bit more dynamic...

kippemon: dig that dino steed, cool idea to incorporate a much older era element with this chow, actually can't remember which show but there seems to be quite a bit of this clashing the prehistoric era with steampunk sci-fi nowadays

k_z: like the pose, is that the color scheme ur going with? seems like steampunk tends to favor more of the brownish muddy hues, not to say that that's correct thing to do but just feel like it will help sell the steampunk idea moreso...

Burl: oversized monkey wrench is cool idea, plus like the animator type sketch that ur going with!

Mincx: like that poster theme idea! i think some work with proportions will help a lot, seems like ur using a ref to flesh out the anatomy, just remember not to be a slave to it...

Seablossom: looking great so far, i think the upper torso, particularly the breast looks a bit too big or large for the overall proportion and also the arms look a bit to long, definitely need some foreshortening on em...

fudoki: cool idea, keep developing some of the forms...

(hellfire, smolin, urotskidoji sorry just recycled what i wrote in previous post, looking forward to ur updates!)

Yeah... the arms are too long. Those corsets that they wore back in the day had such a stiff and sometimes a weird shape effect. Was trying to also capture that cinched waste effect as well; but that's not the most important thing. Thanks for the feedback Snootchy!

seablossom: no prob, yea i understand what ur going for and the reason it's looks off is because u have the planes in different perspectives from the shoulder line up to the head it's like a front view and then from the top torso down to the pelvic it's foreshortening away from the viewer, it might help to think in terms simple forms to get them in perspective and then start to push the forms with the corset, i like to think of the corset like a face lift pushing loose skin up hence getting that distortion but nailing the underlying anatomy still helps to move on to that distortion, hope this helps...

fdisk: thanks! dig the helm good start, be cool to see that angelic helm develop!

eyes a bit worn from work but here's a quick sketch for another idea on the gunner

PokketMowse: The Clockwork Cricket is fantastic!

Some more revisions on mine. Someone pointed out that I had placed the right arm and leg both forward, but people don't run like that: the limbs alternate. So I fixed that. I did some more rendering and added some roughed in FX.

I'm changing the hero's name to Workhouse. :D I decided he was a laborer who had a work accident while shoveling a load of strange and eerie coal  and ended up with the ability to spontaneously create fire from his skin. But he can't throw it or anything, so it's kind of pointless. His evil industrialist bosses decided that he could be useful as an enforcer to crush nascent labor unions, and so designed a special suit for him. It's rigged with steam-powered valves that pressurize his flames, and allow him to shoot them out in bursts. And they gave him the top hat and cane and a lot of money to make him feel cooler about cracking down on his former co-workers. But can he be trusted to cooperate with his evil industrialist masters? Find out in the next exciting issue.

reginanegra, interesting scheme, though it makes him look rather menacing. Still, more interesting than your first post.

Koh, I love how clean your lines are. Very nice style!

JanJager, he looks like he's enjoying the flight~ :D Neat concept so far, and I like his emblem.

alexson, She looks good as a Steampunk character, but hope you do find something to make her look more super. :)

Tawnos, nice name, cool design so far. :) Hope to see an update soon.

xLouisax, I like how you've come up with various elements in order to settle your hero. I like the middle one, definitely keep the dress. :D

LA-Fairy, nice colour palette. :) Her hands are a little small, will need some fixing- I do hope you finish it.

witcrack, I like the character concept so far, and he looks like a pretty fun character to hang around with. :)

Hellfire, can't believe you drew that so fast! Wonder what it looks like now...

ethan karnopp, I like your character :D He makes me smile.

ShehZ, nice details there so far.

Parsakoira, a very intimidating character- want to see how he turns out. :) Or how your other character will turn out if you're starting again.

IDP- Post updaaaate.

caanan02, woah, like the background. Just waiting now for the hero to show up. :)

Dacountno2, the initial sketch is as you said- but hope you do manage to do up something before the deadline. :)

Desero, looking good so far. I like how that frost contraption looks.

PxelSlayer, the initial sketch reminds me of Elektra... XD; I like how she turns out oafter you've put down the colours. :) She looks gorgeous.

Parsakoira, looks great so far!

Apfelschnecke, anatomy needs a bit more work but otherwise interesting design so far.

Lucyohlucy she's looking sexy! Nice work on the colours.

karantina, your heroine looks good, though I'm not quite sure what she's holding?

Urötskidoji, I was wondering why Wheeler's namesake was such until I saw the concept you had of him fighting against an evil steambot. Intriguing~ :)

Pixeltuner, that is looking kick-ass so far. :)

Supervlieg, hee, nice design. :) Maybe his ability is to withstand the heat from the rockets?

Tahrinya, seems like he could do with more steampunk elements I think? Or maybe it's 'cause he doesn't have colours yet. Good luck on working from that perspective, can't wait to see how he turns out. :)

EBrown, Oooh, those are really nice sketches. Can't wait to see your eventual hero.

Lianti, wow, Boomba looks great! :D

artiphats, that's some neat linework. :)

Kippemon, Miss Brawlesque looks cute. :D

k_z, I do like the second one better- she seems to have more attitude!

Burl, digging your style- hope you get out of your artist block. :(

Mincx, interesting idea, it looks neat so far. :)

Seablossom, I know how you feel. Here's to hoping you perservere! The wings are coming out pretty nicely. Your progression looks good.

Niva, funky concept. :)

fudoki, can't wait to see more. :)

Paolo13, intrigued by what I'm seeing. Am wondering what kind of hero that is.

BenQ, looking good!

PokketMowse, wow I really love the Clockwork Cricket! I was going to do something similar with that, though mine has no need for a wheelchair. Your character would be more engaging though. :)

Grumbleputty, AWESOME NAME. :D Looks exciting so far, and very justice-like.

fdisk - oooh, pretty neat- a hero of flight!

snootchy, nice gunner concept there in your latest post~ I'm more partial to the one you had in #61 though.

Smolin, I think your hero turned out rather well.I like how you added more interesting elements to his outfit, like the sparks/embers.

Tawnos, :( I guess, you can still work on a newer pose whether or not there's a deadline, just for yourself and us. :)

karatina, I quite like the colours. I'm thinking those flying cogs look too uniform? Maybe have some at different angles?

TSonline, hope you do finish it, I like what you have so far!

ActonArt, Cogs look great, hope you get new batteries soon so we can see more progress.

Reginanegra, liking how he's coming along. The rendering on his helmet is looking good.

Tahrinya, oh that looks more dynamic; that clockwork parrt looks nice! Your colour choices are coming along nicely.

naaaq, nice concept designs for your hero! I really like the dude at the bottom left, because the flapping scarf makes him stand out. Plus, he's got a huge-ass weapon.

IIKII, I remember watching Steamboy- those were fun times! I Nice hero- what exactly does he do?

Seablossom, oh that's no good, but I hope you get better quickly! Maybe bests not to overwork yourself so you can have 100% to work on the entry. XD proportions are looking much better and the rendering on her wings is beautiful.

Koh, your character is looking great too!

Mincx, she's looking really sexy with that hourglass figure- so yes the shoulders look good. I think her head is still a little big but doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

LJS, nice concepts! XD He does need more stuff on his feet~

buffichar, your hero is looking cool. Maybe give her a little more hips there? and actually tapering the middle of her raised arm slightly? It currently looks like she has no elbow. o.o

snootchy, :D uwooh wish I could paint like you. lunch doodle <3

artiphats, ah, very superhero-like. :)

MittyMandi, :( why not?

alexson, I think she needs a bit more hair volume on the right of her face. Everything else looks good.

Pixeltuner, :o gorgeousss. <3

Mat Kaminski, hope to see more when you go further. :)

Paolo13, omg, she's looking pretty awesome with the exposed parts (haha, that sounds dirty).

Urötskidoji, the one you're thinking of going with looks the best. The first looks like some hula-hooping action is going on. XD; Anyway, I'd probably suggest cropping the left and right to narrow onto Wheeler?

Supervlieg, looking sweet! Great to see a hero saving someone here. :)

Her superhero ability is to be able to emit light. She used to glow all over, but now with her channeling gloves she can work out trails of light from her fingertips. ilmenhin: thanks, but I think you paint much better than i do, i just put bs on the canvas haha, really like the goggles and the pose, the body is a bit twisted much but looks good overall, looking forward to seeing ur sketch pushed further!

JanJager: thnx, u have such a cool way of capturing a playful aspect to the chow's, i dig the way u captured the forms and expression flows well!

Lucyohlucy: thnx for the crit, i agree actually i haven't even started to think about all the little gadgets etc, but thanx will definitely work on pushing those elements further! cool update, I think there are still issues with the anatomy, i agree with what LJS had mentioned, woman tend to have longer necks than men cuz of the smaller trapezius muscles

pixeltuner: wicked update, luving the color scheme! yea sijun rocks! once in a while the greats like sparth and vyle will post, too bad haven't seen the great mullins (aka spooge demon) post anything lately or since i joined =( but of all the forums i've learned the most from that thread and now here to refine and push speedpaints to more finished sketches!

Most kooky first though....

Once Captain Ogilvy of the Royal Fusiliers until shattered by cannon fire
- he is now......
Monkey King!!!
protector of the British empire's opium trade in the orient

Utilising the great apes phenomenal strength, aided and enhanced by the latest technological developments.

Hes a detachable head!- so a touch of frankenstein.
A bit like all those mounted trophy heads too.
I gave him a sculptural helmet- to protect the human head in a fight/when he's crashing through walls etc.

Far left is the escape mechanism- a balloon with props (stowed in the back mounted power unit), carrying the head and its vital life support equipment..

The little clockwork monkey is there to attend to things out of reach.

Sort of wondered whether he should have antenna to recieve beamed energy to power him- like a Tesla thing- a twist on the whole frankenstein idea.

(I guess for an arctic assignment he might have a polar bears body...etc)

Gave the Captain Ogilvy big sideburns- (buggers handgrips as they say).

In the land of Williard things are quiet and calm, the town are happy and recovering after the junkwars. Williard has taken role of the town superhero, he uses his powers of mechanical regeneration to help the towns people achieve their goals, and he finds it quiet pleasing.

Willard lost his legs during the junkwars, but fortunately for him his special ability has enabled him to control any metal that has had contact with his blood. Also being an avid engineer he has been able to create a range of prototype bodies for himself, and would interchange them depending on the situation.

If in dire circumstances he can choose to expel his blood onto objects around him to create new mechanical prosthetics. But in his current peaceful predicament his favourite pass time to to escort the children around to the town to school and play.

---

Williard is a name in the works. I want it to start with a W at least. S:

Hmmm... I made some minor updates, got rid of the energy glare since that probably added the most sci fi element. Added some gauges and cleaned it up a bit.

I might actually be done, don't know how much time I'll have before the deadline to work more. Wish I could've done better but I'm actually happy with this becuse I used a completely different workflow than usual and the result stands out from my other works.

Page 5 already? Wow, you guys work real fast here! I'm still reading about steampunk, 'cuz to be honest, I was a little vague about it and still am! :D

well anyway, here's my update: very minor :bashful:, gotta make my mind up ASAP. I have an idea on how he can step on the orbs and jump to help his mobility, because he's a scout type superhero, so I think it's only logical to have a super motoric ability as well... arh, I think I have to figure out how to say these right. Hope the picture can tell it better:

Colours are going to come on the weekend, if I find a timeslot for that, because I have to read through some colouring tuts first, I have no idea of digital painting :)

ianthegeek, that arm looks fantastic. If you're going to get killed, I hope you have someone to resurrect you after! D:

JanJager, that colour scheme is awesome! It makes him look more approachable. :)

Lucyohlucy, thanks, I dig your work so far. Nice colours, and that brush you're using really adds up to the steampunk atmosphere. :) I agree with LJS on giving her just a little more neck.

IIKII, haha, I like her backstory. :) Pretty cool looking gizmos too on her back.

snootchy, thanks, you're too kind, but it's not true. :P I like how your update has more flow and movement. What about pinstripe patterns for the pants and couple of brass buttons? I don't know.

dVargas, good start so far. Might want to fix up his right hand in the next update? His hand doesn't look right on his wrist.

lach-land, those sketches look cool! For a moment I actually thought the guy's head was Abraham Lincoln's. XD;; That clockwork monkey is neat. Very useful for a hero like the Monkey King.

LJS, nice sketches, hope you will find what you were looking for. :)

Jaunay, mechanical regeneration- that's a great idea. :) Mr W looks good so far, and very interesting.

lancer_idenoure, it could work with a brighter colour scheme so he doesn't look as menacing?

Niva., that makes me think of the Witchblade comic cover. :D Cool layout. She looks like she can take out a whole army of evil robots.

witcrack, you caught up pretty fast. :) Your character concept so far doesn't betray the fact you are still vague on the genre. Can't wait to see how your flying hero will look.

NetherVoid, looking funky so far. More, more!

LovelyMe, sharing is caring. :) Your hero looks cute.

Tawnos, perhaps making the apparatus bigger will show more if you don't intend to change his pose. Otherwise, an angled pose will be good.

ActonArt, nice colours there. I guess her right leg looks screwy at the moment because you haven't quit rendered it yet. Might turn out fine after you put in the shadows and highlights.

Mincx, that girl is looking fine. Lace will be sexy on her!

Mr. Doggytail so far:

1 - there's no superhero feel about this design
2 - The colorscheme bothers me

First, my progress on Big Ben so far:

1104965

I need to add some machinery, paint the villain, and maybe add some cowering laborers in the background. My idea is that Big Ben roams the industrial areas of London by night, punishing factory bosses who use child laborers (which, I found in my research, was a terrible and common reality in victorian mills and factories).

Ok, now some crits and reactions. I'm sorry I can't offer reactions to everyone's work- there's just too much, and it's all so fantastic!

Supervlieg: Fantastic, but I think you're missing an opportunity with your damsel- her hair and clothes look like she's stationary, while the guy carrying her is rocketing upwards. A long dress or long hair could really increase the sense of motion.

Pixeltuner: I'm so frickin' jealous of you right now!

ilmenhin: Nightglow looks great- very nice pattern choices in your materials.

ianthegeek: Fantastic- I always enjoy seeing your work. You might be able to sell the "steampunkiness" even more with some ornate and unnecessary brass trim on the arm plates.

janjager: Cool, clever design- looks more villainous than heroic, which might be something to play up even further. A very original take on steampunk.

Lucyohlucy: Gorgeous- my only criticism is that some of the steampunk elements look kind of stuck on, especially on her hat. Maybe you could find some ways to integrate them into her outfit a bit more. But again, beautiful!

IIkII: terrific, and a nice and suprising color choice for her outfit (it's not a color you usually associate with steampunk, which I think is refreshing. Watch her backpack- it gets a bit lost in the background mechanical stuff, so it's hard to say where she ends and the background begins.

lach-land: Holy crap that's great! I love the dirigible-harness!

Sorry, that's where I ran out of steam (plus, I really should get to work before one of my bosses comes by!). I appreciate, and desperately need, any crits or suggestions you can offer.

Hey, everyone! So cool to see all the different ideas out there, and all the different ways that this aesthetic can be applied. God, I love art! :)

Here's my take on it. I haven't quite figured out what her superpower is, but that'll evolve in the next day or so, I'm sure. I drew this yesterday from memory during my company's Q3 financial review meeting...obviously I was taking copious notes on our annual revenue growth. :P I'm just stoked that I got the proportions somewhat right. Now she just needs some bionic legs or summat.

My girl's look is inspired by GreenTea13 (http://greentea13.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d1pu7cw) on DeviantArt.

These are all looking so amazing, I'm soooo behind!

My character Daisy 'one shot' something, has the amazing powers of being the perfect marks-woman. I heard that if someone pulls a gun on you, and you run away, theres a 4 in 100 chance of them actually hitting you, let alone hitting a vital organ. So being a perfect mark I rekon is her superpower, she never misses!!

Cozmo: How about her superpower being related to her gunning skill? Other than perfect aim cuz that would be much like xLouisax' Daisy. Just a suggestion :) Oh and, I want to see a full figure! :D
JaneMag: Nice development... I like it :) but could it be "giant's pocket watch"? it won't fit in his pocket anyway :D
MincX: Reward! Nice and iconic name, I love it! :) I'm not familiar with Adam Hughes, but the outline gives interesting effect. Her head is a bit huge, though.
Seablossom: Looks promising, keep at it :)
xLouisax: Nice, i like the concept. but i'm not sure about "4 in 100 chance", is that sounds like 0,04 percent? maybe you meant 25%? that's not quite super either. Just go mad and give her 100% chance of hitting, including ricochets! :D Only when she sees her target though.
Lucyohlucy: That is gorgeous i like the feel of it.
Burl: Hahaa. Maybe that's because it's looking very clean at the moment. Try to give his muscles pronounced and his arms lots of hair to avoid looking gay. Rust on his instruments and armor might work too. But on a second thought, a clean and gay super handyman sounds unique too, idk... Well, just keep at it, it's looking good :)
PokketMowse: Wow! Exciting character! I love love the concept! Cannot wait for the finished version.
bhanu: Looking energetic, both the character and your strokes (which i think is really good, you work with traditional ink a lot? just curious). Nice! Looking forward for more development :)
NetherVoid: Looking good. That's steamboy on steroid! :D Not sure about his cloak though, it made me doubt how tall he really is.. and that cloak isn't gonna spread down on the ground and tail him like a bride's gown, or is it?

Hey all. A preliminary/WIP of the character I'm thinkin' of doing. Critique and comments please! :D.

I was thinking along the lines of Gambit's ability to supercharge items with energy... Which is what she's able to do, with her super-awesome cogs of kick ass. She's also able to fly, by adding said energy to the cogs in her heels, propelling her upward; to descend she lessens the amount of energy being discharged.

I didn't wanna go with a lot of actual steampunk technology, so I made it simple and 'having powers'-based, since to me being a 'super'hero means having super abilities/powers, and using them to help others...

I would quickly look at some Victorian fashions and sketch a few of the occuring features of Victorian costume. You'd be suprised how quickly you could apply some of these things to your character, even if she's still wearing skin-tight stuff :p

I've been busy but I think I'll give this challenge a go. I have a character penciled, and it shouldn't take more than a few hours to color it up.

I thought of what super hero type I wanted to do. Obvious was an Iron Man themed character, or strongmen, or people otherwise enhanced by steampunk tech.

After a lot of thinking I decided to go with a Witchblade type character. I drew up the pencils a few days ago, but I don't think it looks steampunk enough for me, so I'm going to change things up for the color version.

Final Burning's up already?? Ouch! Gotta work faster and forget everything i've read :D

JaneMag: Oh wow! Nice colours especially.
Avisnocturna: That simplicity in your character could make a very distinct character. Perhaps you can add a little steampunkyness at the background? Idk, but finish it please, it looks good! :D
Snootchy: Liking what i see. Nice combination between steampunk and regular sci-fi :) The New sketch is also nice. I really like the idea (and the name, BLaze)
Grumbleputty: Crop it! move the little girl behind the Big Ben (at the left, our left) I really like the concept, imo it's one of the most iconic character in this round and it's too good not to put in the final :)
ArtByZak: The sharp shapes (witchblade-style blades) make it not steampunk enough, at least conventional steampunk. How about make them like big needles with cylinder joints?
Seablossom: Give the boots some colors (perhaps bronze). It looks pale down there, imo (prob'ly because it's of the same colours as her skin).

Here's my update, gotta think the most practical and fastest way to finish this up. AND I haven't thought the name! Focus focus focus.

Grumbleputty, Nice to see you enjoy the challenge- but it still is looking a little ominous; I would have suggested making the guy on the floor look evil, so by relativity, Big Ben would look out to be the hero? Maybe do away with the other details of the background, and submit what you have?

IDP, I like the Iron Hawk! I'm glad spent more time on him then going away to cry (after making post #149).

ShehZ, Commander looks stoic! :)

Cozmo, goggles are alright, but for this theme, yes, they could do with a more exaggerated size. ;) Good luck.

NetherVoid, noooo, funky is a good thing! Sorry for the confusion, hope you didn't go cross-eyed trying to figure out what I meant on your hero. In my vocab, funky is another word for cool. :) Looking forward to seeing the coloured version.

Mincx, fab work! The colouring is quite Adam Hughes to me~ :)

Seablossom, great plug over at the finals thread. :)

xLouisax, I am liking your concept for Daisy "One Shot". :) The colours look good.

Lucyohlucy, wow, that's beautiful! You're awesome. I like how her hair is fluttering in the wind like fire.

PokketMowse, you could actually away with the gun, but not necessary. I mean, she is after all, a hero. ;) Tragic accident, but I like how she didn't lose her optimism there. Those propulsion feet things are brilliant. :)

bhana, looking good.

witcrack, no crits, it's all good! Mmm, those look like pokeballs. XDDDD I mean, just because they're round. Hmmm I can't think of any names which aren't silly... hope you find him a name!

Cherubiel, neat hero! I might watch her left feet (our right)- she loosk like she might topple over. A suggestion would be to draw a line straight down from her centre of gravity and you'll see what I mean.

Onnophris, keep going, interested in the final.

Zohra, finishing her might give you a good feeling even if you missed the deadline. :) Hope to see more actually. xLouisax has good advice there in the post after yours.

Lianti, I love the rendering on your heroine actually! She's got a great pose. Though- I don't know who I like more. It's hard to choose.

ianthegeek, fantastic details there. :)

AvisNocturna, eeee he looks awesome. Does he sing while he works? :DD I'm loving how he looks. If you ever finish, please post in your SB.

snootchy, Ah, Blace does look more interesting. ^^

ArtByZak. very cool, very witchblade-esque. Looking forward to the colours. :)

Grumbleputty - you have the most important element done, which is the character. Forget the background! Just crop in on the character and the old man, throw in a generic BG, and submit it!

Okay, about 80% done with the colors. Still have a lot of work to do, though. And I'm still debating what to do with her spikey stuff... have a few ideas I'm going to try tomorrow morning. Denver is GMT -7 hours, so I'm guessing that means it has to be in by 1pm my time? Eek.

I think the copper and brass/gold coloring kind of gives it something of a Steampunk flavor. Right? I hope so, at least!

ShehZ, good work. Nothing to critique... assuming you are going to render that last cog behind his head. :)

ArtByZak, haha yes, it gives off the "steampunk aura".

/sigh, I was really hoping I could get this done by the deadline but I don't think that's going to happen seeing how I'm about 20% done *cries*. I wish I had more time to work on it this week; darn job of mine taking up too much away from my free time -___-

This is what I have so far, any crits would be appreciated. I'm going to try and see how far I can get before the deadline!

LovelyMe, don't fret. Lay down all the flat colours, then add shadows and highlights methodically. It might give the finish look faster than if you rendered each bit as you go along? She's looking good so far, hope you finish in time!

SheZ: You know what would look really good with that? A clear azure blue detail of some kind. Perhaps in that circle on his chest?

deadline is not until tonight right? I'm in PST (California) so what time do I have until?

Seablossom: Give the boots some colors (perhaps bronze). It looks pale down there, imo (prob'ly because it's of the same colours as her skin).
.

That's exactly what I wanted to do, just simply ran out of time! I was so proud of myself to even get something submitted on time :D

LovelyMe I agree with ilmenhin! You could bash out some shadows and highlights over the flat colours and submit that, you look like you've done alot already! Go for it! :) xx

Any chance for an extension? Personal commitments mean I wont finish another one in time:( How about an extra day? Go on, you know you want too :)

I cannot put up the poll tomorrow so I'm afraid no extension...

Didn't make it into the voting poll by mere minutes. Sucked so many types of butt, that did.

PokketMowse: Haha. :P I can imagine it did. But a very cool design nonetheless, and nicely painted! I love the golden metal's textures.

PokketMowse, such a shame. :( I really like her backstory and design. Nevertheless, you should congratulate yourself on a job well done.

Oh man, I'm having so much trouble voting.

I didn't make it in time, I knocked out about 30 minutes after posting what I had done because I had a photo shoot to do in the morning :( Haha, but I'll keep this in mind for the next one though, thanks for the tips :)

Haha thanks for the encouragement but I'm still not finished :( I need to learn to work a little faster, I spend so much time on the most pointless details lol

I thought this was extremely creative and loved the gear work on this broad. I was jealous I didn't think of it myself! haha :) Great work!

OK, wait...9:00 deadline...GMT +1....hang on, I'm GMT -6...

(does some math...)

Oh rat farts! Missed another one!

Thanks to everyone for the great encouragement and advice- I can't believe it never occurred to me to crop it! Thanks especially to Witcrack- I moved the girl like you suggested, and the composition immediately became ten times better!

For posterity, here's where I got to before I checked the site and discovered I missed the deadline... it's ironic that my superhero is a giant clock, and I missed the contest because I can't keep track of time!
