Manley told me that if I didn't start posting more work here that he would curse my favorite mechanical pencil.

I am not about to let that happen!

i like em all but im really impressed by the third one.. are these sketchbook pages?

I.was.ink
March 14th, 2004, 01:22 PM
These are great. The fourth one is my favorite because of its sketchy quality in some places.
Great lighting on the 3rd one.
The 2nd one is creepy!

Did you draw from actual models for these or did you take pics? How long did it take to draw these bad boys? One last question: What was your weapon of choice? Mechanical pencil?

I love these. The sketchbook stuff on kevart.com is similarly wonderful. They have a great luminescent quality that's horribly difficult to achieve with graphite.

Mechanical pencil, eh? I've always thought those things were the devil's tools - kind of suitable, I guess... :)

Interesting hatching techniques, especially on the girl lying on the chair.. as if the hatches follow the section lines of the volumes and the contours..
See you in Amsterdam indeed, very much looking forward to that.

Everything is drawn and painted from life, including the bird wings. There are portions of the body in the piece with the winged figure that were drawn from statues in museums and then pieced together with the hired model. That piece was a commissioned drawing for Madonna and measures 18 x 23".
Everything is drawn with a mechanical pencil, 0.5, HB lead. Sometimes 2B to punch the darks and the occasional 4H for lights, but that happens about once every other month--so very rarely. The only one on this page that is 2B is the 3rd drawing. The skull drawing is black ballpoint pen and the skull painting is oil.

Everything is from life because I can see more that way. It also feels like more of an accomplishment. The drawings take between one hour to five hours, but the Madonna piece took about 5 days after all the studies were complete--ans that took about 1-2 weeks with revisions every day.

Will post more and thanks for the wonderful comments. Sorry to post so rarely, but I'm EXTREMELY busy.

Thanks,

Kevin

Delicious. Especially at a nice, juicy resolution like this. Having my retinas melt in the white hot glare of this much talent is likely to be an inconvenience, however...

Thanks, Kevin!

Nice stuff! I especially like the 2nd study with the dramatic lighting. If you don't mind me asking, why do you use a mechanical pencil?

if i had to fill an 18"x23" piece of paper with a mechanical pencil, my wrists would breakdown!:D

again, nice stuff...and it's nice to see them at hi-res.

These are dripping with feeling. I love the hatchy sketchies, I could look at them all day.

Are you mainly a fine artist? Do you create work for commission/galleries? In other words, what do you do all day?

Great confident lines, give us more!!

Protect the pencil!

Seriously though, these are incredible. The thing thats got me impressed most is the 3rd one (like everyone else :p) where you've managed to include tan lines and have them fit rather than seem out of place.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you use a mechanical pencil?

Probably so he doesn't need to stop sketching and sharpen a pencil. Same with the pen I'd guess. (if you're drawing in a lecture/class this is especially importnat,no shavings mean less chance getting caught :p)

Course, it might just be he likes mech pencils >.>

LLewellyn,

Very inspirational drawings, yaknow, lucian freud is one of my favorite painters, and you have, in my opinion, something related in your drawings, maybe is the way to create volume thru line work, or the subjects...or the feeling...

love all these!

someone asked for that third word, form, content and ...., i´m spanish and have no clue what you talking about, maybe if you try to describe it i can get it...

pls kev keep posting more...

I like your work a lot. You are very talented. I still have a critique. Dare I venture it?

You tend to draw the faces too large. The eyes should be in the middle of the head.

I'm going to get my ass kicked for mentioning that here about your work, but I think it bears mentioning.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a67/thebohemian/DSC00052.jpg

He is doing a prelim. sketch for the 'deformed baby' painting he posted around here recently. Watching the guy sketch one on one was awesome... hes so focused, so intent, so fascinated by his subject.

That day has inspired me for the last 2 years... truly a master i aspire to. Thanks for the great time kevin (and the pizza).

heh - I see why the fav mechanical pencil was held ransom :)

My favourites are 4, 7 and the last piece - number 7 being my fav. Really nice work. I love the loose gestural stuff where you can see stages of the work from it's loosest beginings to the refined areas - and your line work is quite elegant. Can't wait to see more from you!
