Here are a couple digital illustrations I did for a class with Fredflickstone at Watts Atelier. Both are from screen captures off of Fellowship of the Ring. C&C are welcome.

Could you shrink em down? I don't have an uber huge monitor and I'm too lazy to open PS.

What do you have, a 640x480 15 inch monitor?
They fit fine at 1024x768.

Pretty nice drawings, btw.

Cool, my two favourite characters from the movie. The lighting and mood is quite accurate to the scenes. If you did it with a little more detail I think it would be awesome. How long did you take to finish these anyway?

Thanks for the comments. Each painting took about 4-5 hours each. The Gandalf one was my first ever and was done over the course of several classes at the start of the semester. The balrog was done at the end of the semester and was started and completed in one afternoon.

I agree about the moods, very accurate. I also agree that more detail is needed to define the characters a little more. I do have one thing more to add, and this is just my opinion. These look like they were taken by duplicating a frame from the movie exactly. To me, thats pointless. Why not use the same mood and feel and give us a new perspective of the sceen? If not, why go through the trouble when you could just pause your DVD player. Its kind of like storyboarding in reverse the way it is now.

Scubasteve: Thanks for your comments. These were done to practice digital painting techniques more than anything else. Also, I used these studies to develop my color sense from reference since the original screen captures are more washed out and less vibrant. Haven't you ever done studies from photographs or from the old masters? As for detail, I was trying to stay loose and just capture the feel of the scene rather than render every single detail.
