Had to do a zodiac. I didn't know much about the zodiac, and chose capricorn because it was neat looking. After a little research I managed to trace the zodiac back to the first recorded civilizations.
Capricorn represented mans' rights over animals of the land and of the sea; the goat and the fish. It's holding it's own horns because it's purpose is to be sacrificed. It's hermaphroditic and multi limbed to add to the deity feel. It's backed by Mesopotamian cuneiform (probably someone's record of how many oxen he sold that year or some other mundane thing). The knife is Sumerian and I'm not sure if it's actually ceremonial and/or sacrificial (although since it has a fuller it's obviously intended for use in animals/people).
I used animator's colerase pencil (blue) on sketch paper. The rest is Photoshop.

speechless. man, this is really amazing. and the amount of thought you put into this image.... stunning!!
could just be my monitor, but i'd like to see more contrast between the body and 'sun' image in the background. maybe if the 'sun was a bit more red? still an awesome piece.

ps - i really enjoyed the 'meatgun' on your website. creative :chug:

@corky13: If i got it right youīre from Vienna so let me explain in german: Zodiac sind die Sternzeichen.
Capricorn bedeutet hier das Zeichen Steinbock.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
Thanks for handling the explanation, Nostromo.
Dresden, that's cool, that print actually came out ok despite coming from Grenville.

besides my work as an "explanator" :-)
i should have commented your work.
I will do that now:
I really like the picture you share with us here.
I like the harmony of itīs composition and
admire the professionality that shines through
the way you wheightet the lines.
I donīt agree with the one who mentioned to use more colors.
I see green, blue, brown, yellow and red in it, so there is not that much color left to use :-)
I do agree with the other guy that said something about the sun in the back that lacks some contrast. Maybe itīs because the colorvalues of the yellow inside the sun are like a bit different from the yellow-values in the rest of the picture. But i also do not have a solution to that. Simply changing to a higher contrast - maybe by outlining the sun - would influence the overall balance of the image as far as lines are concerned. Changing the color-values to a more brownish palette or, in oposite - to a more yellowish pallete would also change the ballance. That leads me to the idea that the momentary status of the picture is just the right balance between slightly disturbing sun-colorvalues and a understatement of contrast to make it clear to everyone where the center of interest lies.
Not to use any shadow at this place of the plot seems to be very politely, cause nowadays everyone seems to use shadows in every aspect of a picture to create interest. You donīt need that.
Hope that helps :D

I really like this. great execution of your concept. Now you know you have to do the rest of the zodiac :)

edit/add:
I just spent some time on your web site; you have some wonderful conceptualizations in your illustration section. I'm very impressed. Capricorn has all the great innovation of your earlier pieces but it's rendering is more refined. I'll keep my eyes open for your future posts.
