oh badass man. i remember the times i would draw people in the mall. your sketchbook is inspiring, i have to get back to drawing from life and get into it as much as you do - these sketches are awesome.

man i need some training with my art. it would make things easier - either way im going to learn it .. im going to go draw now :p

I love your way of drawing.I saw your sketchbook in amsterdam @the pub (remember sitting with Ra Havok, me and alot of others in there?) and you had so well done pieces in it.. wow - I even took a photo of your life drawing @the academy, cause I found it so nicely done. You have great skills, I'm always checking your sketchbook in here, but I think, I'm not in the postion as to criticise your work. Just keep 'em coming, mate.
Hope you enjoy your time in rome, will you be there for a long time yet?

Hyver - I might put a step by step technique sequence together in the future, but it would need to be something that hasn't already been demonstrated on this forum. I'll look around and think about it. The paper size is...between 8X10 and 11X13 or something.
Darkside - Thank you.
s.s.nails - Thanks.
razuel - I usually open a junk drawer and grab whatever I can find to draw with. My parents house has some good already sharpened pencils. "Hello kitty" is a pretty good brand. The bigger the paper the more you get to draw from your shoulder.

Hi Ted :) When I first saw your sketchbook I just wanted to do something to myself - physicaly, like :frustrated: or tear my eyeballs out or peel of my skin.

Now that I have almost got over this feelings - I have one thing to say - please DON'T EVER STOP POSTING !!!! You are soo good. This thread is incredible - every little sketch is mindblowing.

Please consider doing two things:

- Puting an inspiration overdose warning in thread's title :)

- Making any kind of tutorial, wip or something that will let us see your drawing techniques - sort of master at work thing :)

Seeing this today for the first time really made my day or even a week :)

obid619 - Thank you so much for your compliment. I'm trying to scan these pages better so the true contrast of the drawing is demonstrated.
Nixon - Thanks.
flex mathews - Thank you. I'm gonna be updating more often.
auden100 - Yeh, those library pencils are so damn good. If I didn't get caught stealing them I would have more drawings posted.
thirdeye - Your response is out of hand. I don't even know how to reply to that. This forum has to many dynomite artists to talk about me that way, but I'll take it anyhow. Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy my work. I still have to look around and see if there's something new I can present as a tutorial.
sinx - Hey man...just don't give a shit. Make drawing with a pencil exciting. Auden100 and I were just talking about how you can draw with stolen pencils. It's a blast. You still it...and then you try to use it up before you get caught with it. I draw because it's a risk.
Rowan - Thanks. The more recent drawing have been inspired by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). I was blessed with the opportunity to spend two days in the Louve studying his breathtaking portraits some time ago. I can easily say that seeing the linework and diligent rendering of a focal point by Ingres is some of the most incomparable art I have seen in my life. Kevin and I hung out a while ago, he's a great artist to give a sense of.
Red_Rook - Hey buddy. I saw a picture of you in the recent workshop pics thread. Your making it to every one of those events. I'm doing great. I just did some character design for a major title that is going to be released on the PSP. I am currently doing concepts for a next generation title. I gotta bunch more goin on, but I'll send you that on my next site update. Talk to you later.
Eyal - I'll try to get some more monsters goin. Thank you for your encouragment.

This is a "sleepy time drawing" page. I've gotten into doing self portraits to put me to bed. It helps me calm down. The center portrait is the long hair I had when I started this page. The top right image is skeewed, because of the way I had the book rested on my knee...it's kinda neat. Oh yeah, I'm the feature artist at http://lifeduringwartime.net/gallery.html.

Howdy, Ted!

Man, it's a shame you can't update often, these are fantastic sketches! You do an excellent job with your portraits, the anatomy and proportions are just perfect!

I was really enjoying your sketchbook until I got to your October 18th post... and then I decided that you, sir, are overly talented and skilled. After the 18th your sketches got way better, love the style! Reminds me a lot of Kevin Llewellyn's figure drawings and portraits.

IanE - Thank you so much for your compliment. Let's see...Oct. 18...On October 18, 1898, American troops fighting the Spanish-American War raised the United States flag in Puerto Rico formalizing U.S. control of the former Spanish colony. So I thought shit, if they can do it than I can do something.
dadamafia - Thanks.
vigostar - I'm glad you appreciate that design. Thank you.
Sinix - Thank you.
Rusty - I usually would prefer a darker lead. A B or 2B lead would give me a greater range of value than an H or HB. A softer lead is going to give you a better mark on the surface depending on how soft are hard you are pushing. I want the desired value as fast as I can get it. A set of pencils with a full range from HB to 6B or whatever would be ideal. Thanks.
Icey - Thanks. Please do get better at drawing from the figure. It's very satisfying to watch you own work grow. Get a stack of figure drawing books going and read/study them. I have a Vanderpoel book that I have carried around for a long time. I am enthralled by his technique and teaching so much that I would say he is one of my top artists of inspiration.

Here is a drawing from a drawing workshop held by Michael Hussar that is now held in a Sushi Resteraunt in Los Feliz. I had a mean headache during this session, but here it is.

brkofdon - Hey, thanks. You can still crit my work. Grandma can look at a design and say "This is wonderful!, but what the hell is that?" I want my artwork to be readable to everyone. Sometimes a part of the illustration can be unreadable and it takes someone besides the pride filled artist to point out the obvious.
jetpack42 - Here's another for you folder...or not. Thanks.
bwkeough - Thank you.
Morbid - You kind of look like that portrait of Mozart on the one with long hair. Best comment on this thread so far...your really looking arn't you.
killing.people - Thank you. I'll try to do some more.
Abra - Thanks.

Here's a rejected concept. Sometimes I know that I am risking an art director's typical acceptance, but I still have to try because I want to grow. If your down with Hesh Metal, here's a url: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/listen/default.htm. Just click on Full Metal Racket. Just think Judd Nelson from Breakfast Club.

IanE - Thanks for being a fan. That previous finished pieces have been solitary figures. The rejected concept obviously isn't. Some art directors take chances, some don't. The replacement piece is coming along just fine.
Icey - Thank you.
steak-tron - Thanks so much. I had a chance to look at some of your work. You have this awsome creature with spider legs and...I can't describe it. I'll try to find it later and comment on it. It's cool though.
cburt - Thanks.

Here's a quick figure study. I started it and then my buddy needed me to help him look for his wallet and then I raced back to try and finish. Sometimes you lose stuff and we gotta band together to fight losing stuff. Cause losing stuff never gives up.

These are beautiful, Ted, holy crap! I have no idea how you have the patience to render the detail that you do, but its great when contrasted with stuff that is mostly white space. It's great to see your develpoment pages and I really admire and appreciate your "but I still have to try because I want to grow" philosophy, particularaly coming from a professional. In the short time that I have been doing illustration, I know that there are sometimes where you either have to compromise yourself or do what you feel was right, and its awesome that you went with the latter.

Ted
March 24th, 2005, 03:33 PM
Here's another figure drawing from the Hussar group.

Tigermilk - Yeh, holy crap. I have been blessed with some great opportunities. I actually live pretty close to underneath the Hollywood sign. What's funny is most of my recent work has been in Burbank or remote, freelance stuff done for companies somewherez in the midwest.

Jeff Jaws - Things are going great. Glad you enjoy the little nuances in my work. I'm gonna respond to your sketchbook as soon as I'm finish posting here. Stay cool.

obid619 - Thank you.

stormeffex - Thanks.

Barts - I think we all want to draw like someone who may be more advanced in their skill, but don't forget that your expressionism is something that you can only offer to the rest of us. Thank you for the compliment.

Etherial79 - Shit...I don't think so. Unless a teacher can draw and write like Andrew Loomis or John H. Vanderpoel they have no business putting together an instuctional book. Glad you enjoy my technique.

Keepiru - Thanks so much. I find the labor of detail to be very relaxing. It's a joy. I'm glad you like that contrast. I have been so inspired by the drawings of Ingres to Grosz. The contrast of line work with values is great fun. Yeh, I usually do what I want to do and art directors are excited about it. It's good to remember that your working for somebody and you can also do what you want to do at home. I did do another piece as a replacement, so don't think I'm that daring.

I can't think to say anything more that hasn't been said already, but I really admire the thoughtfulness of your line and your values. It reminds me of some older 50's-60's style ad illustrations in a way. Do you layer your values or use a blending stump at all?

Nice work.

mentler
April 4th, 2005, 10:31 AM
I have noticed that you often have the corners of your eyes alined on a horizontal plane : this is something I see very often even among professionals : remember that the front plane of the face is not flat : it is cylindrical : otherwise you would not see the eyes at all in profile : the corners of the eyes should almost never be in a line in front or three quarter views unless you are trying to do something specific with them.

If you take a look at your drawings you should see what I am talking about.
A minor change should make a major difference!

flaptraps - Your sketchbook is great. Had a time taking a look at it. Thanks.
dadamafia - Glad you dig it.
obid619 - No I'm not. Thank you for that strong encouragement though.
Odds - Thanks.
Samburger - I'm in love with the drawings and writings of the American golden age artists (I think that's what you meant). Vanderpoel, Leyendecker...love em. If my work reminds you of the artists of that time and school (in any way) then that is an enormous compliment. Thanks. I do use washes of graphite and pick the midtones out. I use a tissue to blend the entire drawing to develop a receding atmosphere. This is done once or twice, depending on time. Then I just continue to work on the darker midtones and darks to bring the subject foward from the hazy blend of graphite. Hope that makes since. Maybe I do need to do a demo, if there's an interest.
mentler - Your absolutely right. I've been lazy on the other side of the center line. I need to apply what is apparent in my observational drawings to my figure invention. In my future drawings I'll hide the corners of the receding eye with the bone of the nose and the orb of the orbital plane when appropriate. Thanks for the conviction.
johndonahue - Screw you.

Hey Ted, that last page is amazing. I'm really impressed at how you are able to utilize the full spectrum that a piece of paper and pencil alone provide. KR33P - Thanks.
Dwizard2k - Thanks pal. I do like how a composition of different sessions will come together on one page of a sketchbook. Yeh, see you later.
dakoscwash - That makes me really happy to think that my drawings might inspire another artist. I have tried to use the full value range in my drawings, if time allows for it, for some time now. I think my earliest (bad) scans don't demonstrate that, but it's more clear now.

Very good TEd, Very good. Just one minor complaint. While your pencil skills are really good, I notice some slight shading problems with the women on the last 2 pics. Art_Addict - Thank you. Is it that you haven't seen my work before or is there something specific you haven't seen in this thread. I just want to know if something different is jumping out at you.
obid619 - Yeh, I just wanted to concentrate on the portraits and still include as much of the figure as time would allow. So, that lack of attention to turning forms is left to suggestion ans atmosphere. Just consider the "lack of shading" as your periphial vision and your viewing experience of those pieces will be much better. In fact go ahead and do that to all of my work...there's bound to be something nice to focus on...hopefully.
ZebzFree - I am getting paid! It's fun. I need to remember that. I will keep posting. These comments are very encouraging. Thanks.

obid619 - I'm really glad you enjoy my work. Thanks so much for your continued response and encouragement.
Red_Rook - Thanks pal. Happy eighteenth birthday.
flaptraps - Thanks.
T-lapia - The best advice I can give is to study a particular technique of an artist or school you admire. Make sure you make it your own by allowing your personal expressionism to come through. Study the progression from David to Ingres to Chasseriau. The strongest skills come from attempting the desired effect you want in your work until you can do it in an instant without any reference or guidance from an instructor. You can't get discouraged. Make it work. The successful artists are extremely determined at the particular moment and for life. Hope those words help...I'm going to try to listen to that advice as well. Thanks for the compliment.
Art_Addict - Thanks so much.

Alisa - I find it a very irritating labor to work from photos. I can do it if I'm commissioned, but I try to stengthen the forms of the drawing by adding information and pushing it far beyond just a copy. Working from life or out of my head is a far more pleasing experience...that's all you'll find in this thread. Thanks.

I like you're hand writing, like on the siamese triplets at the top of the page. Where'd you learn that?, looks very constitution. Tip: pay more attention to the contours of the bones and muscles around the wrist, the straight lines are hurting otherswise great drawings.
Looked some more: Pay closer attention to the entire contours of the body, particularly in the arms.

brkofdon - Thanks. I don't know if it's a good thing, but I'm glad others might dig it.

Orozc0 - Thanks so much for the props. I'll put them in my purse and save them for a rainy day.

Here's an exploding high-five done with no reference.

I love your head drawings from life, especially of the numerous sleeping people (where do you find them anyway? :P)

Mort - Hi Mort. I think your referring to the post from 1.19.06 or maybe the pages at the beginning of this thread that arn't scanned very well (values arn't as dark as they should be). Either way, thanks for the comment. I will keep it up.

archipelago - Thanks. There are a couple ways to find the sleeping model. I have always had a hard time going to sleep, so I am usually the last to pass-out. I use the advantage of insomnia to either talk without end, spewing diarea, until they send a message to their body to let the muscles that hold the eyelids up to call it a night or I just dress in black pajamas and carry a black sketchbook with a black painted stealth mission pencil (which includes a black eraser and black stained wood) to sneak and draw them in the still of the night.

I learned the later from my study at the Shaolin School of the Fine Arts.

...here's a drawing. Can someone let me know how to change the name of my sketchbook. I used to just edit the title of the first post, but that doesn't care anymore. Please drop some gritty hood-ridden knowledge.

Icey - Thanks. I'll try.
liam.c -Thanks. I tried your suggestion and the first post gets renamed, but it doesn't change the name of the entire thread. If there are any more suggestions, I'd be glad to hear em. I'll try again right now.

Here's some sketches for the Sony PSP Game "The Con." Figured I post em here since they're sketches...old as shit, but still sketches in a sketchbook. I posted them in "It's Finally Finished" with some production work, but apparently nobody cared that I finally finished these. It's a sad story.

Your drawings are simply amazing. The shading awesome and so is the anatomy. Would maybe like to see you push your faces to more a realistic style. Sometimes the eyes seem a bit off (too far from the nose) to me but I'm usually an idiot so I could be wrong there. Great job.

Placeboast - Thanks for the response. Glad you like the pictures. I feel the same way about this stuff. I've always preferred the wide-set eyes on certain fashion models and seem to exaggerate that in my work. One of the things most figure drawing books agree on is the fact that eyes need to be one eye width apart...but once you start studying the portraits in the world around you (the public person, figure models and the measurments in realist paintings) that is a very general rule. I still need to get more picky with feature placement in my figure invention.

This is a study from a model session that was celebrating Fat Tuesday.

Unbreakable - Thanks.
Jarri - That's quite a compliment. I do want to inspire like others inspire me, but please do focus your attention on the masters.
Recursive_End - The sketchbook section is quite a market of threads...makes me wish someone would make a "best of" for this section alone. Who knows how many great sketchbooks we're missing out on. Thanks.
Summer Pudding - Thanks for the compliment. I'm used to seeing your posts on this forum...you've got some great work.
cakeypigdog - Glad to spread some cheer. Don't let things get you down...fight sadness...take a bite out of the ass of life.
Setherial - Thanks. I do have more spooky monster designs, but I'm hesitant to post them. We'll see.
Jeff Jaws - Hey pal! I'll check out your book and reply...your improvement was outstanding the last time I looked. Thanks for being a familiar character in this thread.

Ted

FuT - Thanks. Hope to get another response from you.
Tigermilk - Thanks for all of your encouragement and compliments. I've been freelancing (painting on a computer all day) and persuing my personal expression through fine-art (drawing and painting traditionally whenever life lets me...which has been more and more often, nights, weekends). It's all I do. I got an X-Box 360 for Christmas and have only played it once or twice. I'm sure most of you know how you need to focus and let the labor take over. I just love to paint, but I'm not going to show any of it until I feels right. If you want to see more of my commercial work, I've been doing stuff for Wizards of the Coast. I did work on the Dungeons and Dragons Complete Psionic book. One of my paintings is the splash when you roll your cursor over the D&D icon on the Wizards web page. It's the female warrior with the crossbow. Here's a link to a wallpaper: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20060410a. All of my other freelance is a blurr, except that I have been working full-time for a filmographer based in San Diego (he's done work for Tony Hawk). It's lots of storyboards and cut-away work. I'll have a better recount of what I've been up to when my new website is up. Hope that's a good enough answer. Glad to inspire.
Benga - Welcome. Thanks.
foggle - Thanks. Just keep pushing.
sleeperservice - I attended the Shaolin School of Fine Arts.

Here's a spooky monster (old drawing) to start page #5.

Hey Ted Great work, you are an awesome renderer, but one suggestion, with your skill you know what would be awesome. Drawing some individuals with crazy expressions. For example a warrior who is bloodlusting or a girl crying that would push you in an even higher category.

All these portraits are truely great bro...I'm definatly going to keep an eye on this thread from now on. You have some mad skills with a pencil, I'll look at your images and try to decipher your secrets!

Ashrumm - Thanks. I know your just saying that I need to put more emotion into these figures, but the examples you gave are not the sort of general description people should have in their head when they are trying to convey an expression. I don't think that would help me, or anyone else who is reading for advice, rise to some sort of higher catagory. It's a mistake that peeps make when they are acting for the first time. I've found that I get my best results when I think far more complex than that. Your suggestion does make me take more time to consider the gap between my understanding of character complexity in a story and how much that comes through in my characters face, but a simple change of content isn't going to help anyone get better.

Brall - Thanks. No secrets here...study away. Hope it helps.

ArcoNL - Thanks so much.

Here's a less than 2 hr. study.

Beautiful study man! Looking at this, I start to realise a misstake I apparently make. You spent 2 hours making this; if I try to make a study like this, I tend to spend something like 30 minutes on it. Conclusion: I work too fast..
Something to work on for me...

Cheers,
