quick P7 question

This is a basic question. However it's been driving me nuts.
What does preserve transparency do? And how do you use it effectively. THanks!!

IIRC it just means you can't change the transparency mask. So if you make a shape on a new layer and check 'preserve transparency' then you can paint only inside that shape.
