Thought you guys might like to see it...
It's a poster design I created as part of an assignment to create designs for a nonexistent band. The name was given to us at random, and we worked from there.

http://studentpages.scad.edu/~opersa20/2D3903singlelayer.jpg

Band Summary:
It was March of 1991 when Talvin Stran thought of the idea for the group “Intellectual Overtones.” Desert Storm had just ended, and the Cold War aura was in full effect. He had always considered himself somewhat of a modern hippie, never really understanding war; always thinking on a different level. He felt like portraying how he felt to others. Not just about the idiotic nature of war, but the idiotic nature of everything that people just don’t care to know about on a daily basis. He became almost obsessed with this idea to open up people’s eyes to totally different truths. Expose people to opinions not sprouted by the politically driven media. It was hard enough being a techno artist during the early 90’s, but a politically influenced one? He had a job ahead of him, that’s for sure.
He brought together a bunch of artists he had known from previous encounters, including drummer Hans Gretzel from from the industrial band DZH, which had just broken up the last winter because of “ideal conflicts”, and Trip Static, the guitarist from the sacrilegious metal group JJDD (Jesus Just Doesn’t Die). Also on board were Intellegent DnB artists Chimichanga and DJ Angry Buick. What they had planned was an amalgam of musical styles. A Tour de’ Force of liberal political emotion. The majority of the music would be somewhat of a metal induced DnB, with some new age style to boot. The target audience was anyone willing to listen. Many were interested. They usually included more insanely liberal teenagers than anything. Most of them being faintly tired of the metal sound and looking for something new. Indeed, it was definitely something new. It was definitely something underground.
And underground they stayed for most of their history. They were happy that way, though. They made enough money to get by, and they didn’t have to edit their sound for anyone. But it was in March of 2000, when an executive from KilRoy records came to them looking to have them sign a contract. After discussing it some 5 painstaking (especially for fans) months, they agreed. It was very open-ended, though, as they were allowed total freedom on their tracks, only now they had the added bonus of extra marketing power. Since then, they have blossomed into even more of the Tour de’ Force that they had originally planned. The sound has only gotten better. With 8 excellent records behind them, they’ve left an indelible mark in underground music history. When asked if they would ever quit and when, Talvin calmly answered, “When we’re done.” Indeed.

-----

The eye was actually a 20*30 charcoal drawing I had done prior to the project. The pattern of colors was a pattern acrylic painting I had done before as well. It was all put together and filtered-around (extrude-feather-grid..etc) in photoshop.

Sorry for the long post, BTW.

If anyone cares some of my music is online:

OrganicJerk - That looks really slick. I love the way it feels chaotic & rigidly organized at the same time.

Very rushed ( about 40 mins ), so I didn't get the chance to add any of the psychedelic elements I was planning. Never mind.

( Supposed to be Jimi Hendrix, BTW )

Hey Matt,

Beautiful work for just 40 mins. Didn't need your note at the bottom to tell me who it was!

Hope you can add in the psychodelia later.

If anyone wants to do one for "The Psychedelic Suicide" he or she would be welcome...

Its a friends band and I'm sure they could use a band logo.

Asking that kind of thing never works, but why not ask?? :D

I made this band up. Hope that still counts...

Here's another one although it's a bit of a cheat since I'd already painted Mick Jagger's face a few months back. I just stuck him here as well and made a poster out of him.

Very nice stuff all around!

artistanbul, I love the first one you did, it's so minimal and really nice. Very pretty :)

Hello all... this is my first post on these forums. I've been lurking for a while and figured its time I joined in. I love today's DSG topic so that was a good catalyst.

My faves so far are the Hendrix and Ickanama (artistanbul's second entry).

My sketch is for a band called "My Dying Bride" who play doom metal. Not my absolute favorite but one of them. The image is a take on the age-old theme of "death and the maiden" - which i thought seemed appropriate for this band.

Hey ya'll, this topic was very well timed! I'm going to see one of my top three favorite bands tonight so I thought I'd do a poster for them.

If you haven't heard GRANDADDY, download some.

I just wanted to say that Vely's missle launcher pic yesterday was awesome.

Also, a big welcome to SpiralMagus. You've definitely got talent!

Saladbowl- Well, it is not as slick as Artistanbul's but more of a rough idea for a poster.... I had a lot more fun thinking about this topic with a band I knew nothing about than with a famous one.

OrganicJerk- I really like your design....admittedly probably not done in a day, but still hella cool. The barcode is a nice touch.

Artistanbul- the lettering sets a great dark/artsy tone, and I also love the sketchy black lines around the edges

matt: great one! we already knew that you got MÆD illustration sk1llz but when I saw your name I was in wonder what kind of a flyer or graphic design you did. I said a little oh well when I didn't see any, but the beauty made me forget all about it..

Spiral Magus: yep. thats my dying bride all right :) and a nice one at that..

mr. right: me likes..

I did a really cartoonish poster, to try and convey the silliness of Barenaked Ladies.

Not my favourite band. It's my cousin's band. They are quite good though.

Railboy - I like both of your graphics. Especially the one for yourself.

OrganicJerk - I've looked at yours a few times. It's a simple thing, but I really like what the grid pattern does to the overall piece. The vertical and horizontal lines contrasting against the jagged points - nice.

The band is called Equilibrium. They are local, but have a really good sound and vocal. Anyways... I would like to knoe what I can do to improve this. I know the shading is horrible.

Great topic! I guess I am older than most of the persons I have checked out on here, so this may be too old for some to remember, or care about... The Circle Jerks, a great punk band of the early 80's-90's, had some of the BEST punk flyers.

Time here, there, and everywhere today...

SpiralMagus - Really nice! Not my favorite band either, but still good, eerie music.

delta wolph : They are a rock band. They play stuff that could be described as a mix of The Smashing Pumpkins, The Mars Volta and some Led Zeppelin influences. It's hard to describe, but they have potential in my opinion.

artistanbul : Hey, that is really cool. I like it a lot! Would you mind if I showed it to the guys and maybe let them use it in case they'd be interested..?

OtterFrenzy : Thats cool, too. I like the concept. Same question as above...would you mind?

SpiralMagus - That's a beautiful pic. Great job.

Pretty durned late here... I expected this to go a lot quicker, because the x-ray image itself took about an hour, but all the text and general design - as simple as it is - took me friggin' hours. Anyhow, I've always wanted to do art for this group.
