Inspired by Peter Jackson's LOTR as well as the Ralph Bakshi's 70's animation. Made a pass at an Orc. All crits welcome. Trying like mad to improve. Thanks!

All I can say is "wow," although I'd really like to see a better scan. There's a lot of detail it looks like we're missing here.

And I'm not entirely sure of this but it almost looks like his weight is a little off...I get this impression from the leg closest to us...like his hip is not quite right or something. But maybe it's just me.

Cool...I would like to see it a bit bigger with the levels adjusted to have more contrast. Looks good though.

this is great. the texture of the skin is really convincing, as is the shading. my only crit is the hair ontop of the head. when i first looked at it, it looked a little like some unerased sketch lines. but the problem is, darkening it might throw it into odds with the rest of the work. sorry.

About time you got in here!!!

Folks, listen up. Malachi is a very talented concept artist. I use to work with him and he taught me many things.

Malachi... great to see the piece posted. Just make that axe a little more dimentional. Everything else is looking great!

You've got a lot of great detail going on with this character. Adding some darks on the torso to pop out that arm and axe would be great. Nice drawing!

To make your forms stand out work on lines weights. Leave the thin light lines in the insade and put darker lines around the outside to help defines its form. Right now the axe does not stand out with all the detail you have crammed on this piece - put a nice dark outline in it (axe) and it will pop. Also I recommend using more intinse shading, your character seems to be pretty flat.

Weewww! THat all that being said, your line style is really nice!!! Welcome aboard. and keep posting great stuff.

I worked up a new sketch based on the feedback I received earlier. Sorry for the bad scan. By the way, any tips tips on how to get a good scan from a pencil sketch. I basically use the default settings. Thanks!

Your rendering skills are awesome, there's so much detail in your work. Don't get me wrong, but imho you could make the piece more interesting (than it is now) if you were more concentrated on 1 or 2 real focal points. (like some guys said the axe, or I'd suggest the face.)
At the moment both pieces appear pretty busy to me, because of the high level of detail all over the creature. I'm not in the position to really crit your stuff, cause my skill-level is far inferior to yours, but I'd love to see you trying to apply my tip.
Perhaps my perception is just because of the bad scans, my fault then.
Try scanning your pics with photoshop and then pic/properties/ auto-levels. That helps me scanning my pencil sketches. Perhaps try gradationcurves alternatively.
