View Full Version : Concepting challenge. 04/24 *new topic*

I like the whole vs. thread thing you got going on.. but I would like to make something that is more oriented on creative designing.. mainly character design, with some scenery design, mechanical design, really just anything conceptual... focusing more on making solid designs than anything. Anyway, I'm looking for 1-3 people who wanna go at this with me. I figure having a few people might work better, as even if one person is MIA, things could still chug along.. yet still keep it small enough so we could feel a good amount of motivation and everything. So, I'm hoping to get 3 more people. Once that happens we can get it going, I'll start with some theme for a concept, accompanied with my submission... the other 3 people will be expected to then get their concept in within 2 full days (don't bother with late entries, just for the sake of keeping things orderly and focused), at which time the next person will have another 2 days to make a new concept/drawing.. and so on. If they miss that deadline, the rotation will just skip to the next person. Anyway, I hope some people are interested. :chug:
You should at least have a good foundation in art, concepts can be done in whatever drawing style you wish.
Tell me if you have any questions or suggestions.

This sounds like a good idea. I' much more interested in developing concepts than drawing my own left hand! ;)
(For everybody who has included it in their vs thread, I'm just teasing, please don't take offence! :) )
I can start drawing right now if you want to start a topic, but otherwise, I wont be able to start until Tuesday because I'm visiting a friend over the weekend.
I'm definitely up for this though.

Good deal, yea, working on characters and whatnot is definitely what is sparking my interest more than just normal life studies.
Definitely glad to have you aboard also, empty. I look forward to seeing some neat stuff. I guess I'll just wait another day or so to see if one more person wants to get in, then I'll get our first topic going. The order for topic creation will follow as we joined, so me -> dave -> empty.. and then we'll see if there's one more. :chug:

Looking forward to it guys! See you all soon!

Well, I hate to see the topic drop.. so I went ahead and whipped up our quick first topic. Obviously I didn't put much thought into it. Anyway, the first topic is gonna be a character design, the guidelines are: an adult male modern/futuristic "ninja" character. Yea, that's overly cliche and simple but that'll do. I didn't spend too much time designing, so my character is overly simple, I might make another but at least we have the ball rolling.
http://img5.photobucket.com/albums/v14/Sinix/cc031404.jpg
This topic will go until Dave get's back, at which point he'll have acouple days to make the next topic (remember, it can be anything). Also, we could still use one more participant, if someone is reading this, join up now. A little extra art never hurt anyone.
EDIT: Since it was asked, the glove thing is a device for clinging to walls/objects.. some sort of gravity generating device I guess. I made a quick speedpaint to illustrate the character clinging to a wall.

i think its more like a group effort trying to design charaters, no winners or losers. i'll try to have a sketch of a nija tonight.

March 15th, 2004, 02:44 PM
i'm all for fun, no winners... just design and discussion. i think feedback on this would be great... what people like and/or dislike and how each design could be improved. i know i would appreciate critiques and ideas on how i could improve stuff.
maybe at the end, whoever's topic it is that week should take pieces of each design(the boots from on character with the weapons of another and face of another, you get the point), that they like and combine for the "final"design. i might do that on my own anyway, just to keep pushing things...

Yea, that's an interesting idea, we could definitely have stuff like that going on. It'd be fun to work off each others ideas and all, making more interesting concepts, plus it will fill time while the next person gets their topic done.

here's my adult male modern/futuristic "ninja" character. i did this during my lunch and afternoon break at work today. again, not satisfied with the mech arm. actually not really satisfied with the whole thing. i might try and rework this at sometime and really get that arm hashed out.
anyway, here it goes...

DTO~
nice work on the poses. i need to do that more... i find myself jumping right into a drawing without doing thumbnails. i think they would help out my poses. i think my ninja was a little off-balance. i was gonna say that i'd like to see something to make it more "futuristic" than i realized the topic was "modern/futuristic ninja", so this works. can't wait to see your final.
so how much time is left on this topic? I think two days might be a little quick. especially for those of us that have to scan at work, especially with the weekends. three would be perfect i think. DTO gets the next topic, correct?
Are skank, intern and MIKEC in on our little challenge for sure?

Actually Empty, it's funny you should mention that it needs to be futuristic, cuz that's what I'm trying to think of with my final piece.
I did the 'classic' ninja stuff so that I had a proper starting point. I didn't want to jump straight to drawing futuristic ninja without thinking about what came first. I've been trying to apply a bit more logic to my concept art recently.
As far as drawing lots of thumbs, that's new to me too! :)
3 days seems fine to me, as long as Sinix is happy, he started the thread. I'm not sure if Mike Corriero was interested, but if he is, the more the merrier as far as I'm concerned.
Sinix
March 16th, 2004, 07:11 PM
Yea, a good 3 days is definitely fine. Neat drawing empty, that guy looks downright villainous, the design of that metal arm and the shading on the torso are my favorite parts. Dave, I love that middle pose you did, really pops out of the sketchbook, very stylish, looking forward to your future design.

nice sketch. very interesting and different look on a ninja. i'd like to see more of a design sheet on this guy. it could be very cool. i'm not sure i like the claws or the "dreads" for a ninja, but that's what kind of makes it more interesting.

Sinix
March 19th, 2004, 04:30 PM
Alright good deal. Guess I'm gonna haveto really focus on environments for the time being. Dave, I like the drawing, looks aalmost military'ish.. my only criticism would be the waist area.. seems a bit too angled in for a male of that build. The upper torso and head are quite stylish. :D
DavidCousens
March 21st, 2004, 02:59 PM
You're probably right about the waist Sinix, I might play with that later. Glad you like the image though, thanks buddy. :chug:
I figured we should probably give some feedback for each others images to keep us all motivated, so here goes:
Sinix: I quite like the fact that you've put your ninja in a coat. At first I'd thought it was out of place because ninjas should be sleek and fast, but then I realised it makes it harder to make out the silhouette which works quite nicely now that I think about it.
I like the speedpainting too, I think it'd be cool to give it a background colour if you felt like it.
Empty: As I said in your own thread, I really like the values that you get with your pencilwork. I know that you said you weren't happy with the arm, I think it may be something to do with the elbow/forearm section.
Although it looks like it could still work, it doesn't look like a humans albow forearm does, that may be what's throwing you subconsciously.
Skank: I like your 'fear' based ninja design. I think it would look even cooler if you coloured the buildings in the background.
I hope I didn't sound negative in anything I've said because I think all of the entries have been really good, and think this thread is getting off to a good start.
One thing I am wondering about though...Intern? Are you still with us buddy?
Right, I'd better get looking for some castle reference to get started! Have fun guys!

sorry about being so late. didnt have time to scan til now. i used one of lungbugs sketches as a ref cus i could get a good pose down. also messed up by placing him to low on the page so he has no feet yet..
DTO awesome ninja. i really like the scabbord in the armor
Skank thats pretty tight. do you have other poses of him? i want to see more of him.
empty i really like the mask and mech arm. plus i really like the sais.
sinix i honestly love that jacket. i was confused about the glove thing at first but the speed painting cleared that up
empty
March 22nd, 2004, 02:34 AM
hey everyone...
just thought i'd through down the my quick critique for the ninja designs...
sinix~
i like your hand gravity glove... the desing is cool for the character, but i'm not too totally sold on the trench coat for a ninja. although, it does cloak him, no pun intended, i just think it's too much for maneuverability. nice design work on the quick sketch.
skank~
very interesting piece. i do feel intern is right... more poses for a hashed out character would be cool. the boots, mask and claws are definitely a completely different look than anyone else went, which is great, but they want me to really know what else he has going for him.
I do agree with DTO and wish the building would have a little bit more, especially since you have the lines of buildings, but the moon going right through them. it wouldn't even have to be a lot, just to suggest them a little more. i did a quick adjustment to your sketch to show what i mean with them... hope it helps.
http://home.san.rr.com/emptyart/images/cc_po/ninja_copy.jpg
DTO~
i like the whole thing, pretty interesting. the chestplate and shoulderpads are probably my favorite. obviously the issue with the waste was already brought up. i'm not too fond of the boots... i think they're too big and bulky for a ninja. i thought about giving my ninja boots, cuz i'm a huge fan of boots, but i didn't for that reason. i think they would be great for a different character though.
oh, i also like the fact that you worked on all those different thumbnails for the pose. i should do that more often.
INTeRN~
i like the fact you went for that style of hat... i've always like those, he's a sophisticated ninja...
i wouldn't have put the throwing stars where you have them, but that's just personal preference. as long as it works for you. i think his trap muscles(between the neck and shoulders) is too bulky, but my biggest issue is that your guy is missing his elbow. there should be a point signifying the olecranon of the elbow. i did a quick example of what i'm talking about...
http://home.san.rr.com/emptyart/images/cc_po/ninja1.jpg
other than that, good start. i think you should hash it out some more.
i hope this came off as all constructive criticism
i also hope i can get in my castle tomorrow... it might not be fully conceived though.
peace,

I whipped up a digital work to get the ball rolling on the whole castle theme... I went with a techno/fantasy castle. If I have the time, I'd like to do a detailed pencil sketch or something. Basically it's just your basic castle in the middle of town, except it's raised high up off the ground to make it impregnable and much more high tech.

March 23rd, 2004, 01:52 AM
hey everyone...
first i want to say nice job to sinix. very simple yet clean design of the castle. i really like it a lot.
i actually did a couple castle designs that were up in the air. i did mine for the defensive reason that sinix mentioned, but also to solve their own particular problems... i'll explain when i get there. none of these are finished designs, just sketches(good thing this thread is in the sketchbook section), i didn't have enough time. been spending all my extra time on wedding invitations.
this first one i designed to hang from a cliff or something... again, not a finished design, just a thought...
http://home.san.rr.com/emptyart/images/cc_po/cas1.jpg
this next one is on a rock pillar in a desert environment. it's built so high to avoed attack by the travelling vagrants, scavengers and pirates. yes... desert pirates.
http://home.san.rr.com/emptyart/images/cc_po/cas2.jpg
this last one was built high to rise above the smog and polution of the surrounding "kingdom".

Oh, it didn't take very long at all.. it's hard to say exactly.. I just made a black silhoutte of the castle are which probably took 15 minutes (I'm guessing).. then just a random black silhoutte of a town below which took a minute or two.. with some lines connecting them. I tossed on lose highlights here and there, then made some red and yellowish dots for lights (with a glow on the red). So all that took no more than a few minutes... then the sky is just a simple gradient with simple clouds. Overall, I'd guess the whole thing took around 30 minutes? No real tools.. other than a hard round brush and and gradient/paintfillcan, done in photoshop. Thanks tho.
Empty, I'd say to wait another full day then post a new topic. :D

Recently, I was watching the History Channel and there was something about technology in the old west. then they made a statement about how back then talking about the western frontier was the equivalent to modern day talk about space and mars. so this is my topic....
It is sometime in the future and Mars is slowly being colonized and has become the New Frontier. But since supply ships don't get there to often the technology is not kept up well and has slowly deteriorated over time. some people have even made their own make shift designs. the society is like the old west though, in the thought that lawmen and criminals operate the same way. the other thing that is similar is the fashion and style of the time.
design two things from the New Old West or the New Frontier. first choice has to be either a lawman or an outlaw. the second can be anything else from that environment. you can do both the lawman and the outlaw, or you can design the lawman's trusty steed. remember, it's another planet, so you can make up your own beast of burden or even some type of technologocial steed.
think Hex of DC comics... here's a link to a couple pictures...

holy crap this was fun to do!
i reccomend this technique to everyone =) coro's got a couple tutorials up on how to do it..check em out!http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20273
materials i used: prisma HB pencil, Pilot Hi-Tec C's, .05, and .03 for the inks. tria ink for the washes, prisma colored pencils for the gradients, and Graham&Co. gouache. a little color tweaking in PS7 and its done...i left all the imperfections in there this time...looked better in color than the inks..=P

yeah, i believe it is your turn... it seems like everyone had a busy week and was unable to finish their cowboy/outlaw. i'm still working on mine and i'll post it up on my sketchbook page.
so let's move on...
what do you have for us, skank? hopefully we can get more this time...
as for your submission, i like your colored version a lot. i think you could have added a little more contrast to the face. as of now, the gloves and the gasmask are the focal points of the piece and the face isnt' as interesting.
i also feel the hat is a little small and sits on his head weird. remember, his whole head has to fit under that thing, and right now it looks like his forehead gets completely cut off.
last thing, his wrist looks too have to much curve in it, it looks kinda rubbery.
i like your design ideas and the feel of the character a lot. he looks kinda smug, which some outlaws probably were.
so what's next?

OK, my turn eh ? :chug:
Well, since it seems we're all pretty busy, i wanna make it simple, but fun: so you only hafta do one pic..unless of course you want to show us all up and do more!!! (by all means please do!)
Topic:
Robotic Gladiator
this is T-Dome style i know..but fun none the less!
i think the title is pretty self explanatory, so have at it!!
also, i think if youre able to finish a piece from a past topic, just edit one of your earlier posts and post it here so its still in the right oder...this way its all in one thread =) (not that you CANT post it in your sketchbook of course, but i think it would be cool if everyone can see it all in this thread)
ok, nice, generic topic, but alot of possibilities!
have fun guys =)

D'oh, I'm missing out...
Sorry guys, my computer died this past friday... so I can't scan or do anything without it.... It will probably still be at least a few days or more before I get new parts and everything. :(
I made a sketch of my space western thing.. but like I said, I won't be able to show you for awhile... wah, I feel crippled without my computer. Don't get too far ahead. ;)
Edit: Yay, I'll just add this here.
I guess it didn't come off as western looking as I planned.. maybe a western feel though.

Little late with these, but hopefully nobody will mind! :D
First, the local law enforcer:
http://img27.photobucket.com/albums/v82/DaveTheOriginal/the_good_cowboy.jpg
I've tried to mix the cowboy look with a futuristic police enforcer by borrowing a bit from present day police forces. And of course, I gave him a robot arm, because who doesn't love robot arms? ;)
Second, the bandit, who admittedly doesn't look too futuristic, but he does have some body armour instead of a shirt!
http://img27.photobucket.com/albums/v82/DaveTheOriginal/the_bad_cowboy_sketch.jpg
It's funny, I hadn't drawn for a few days and when I tried to draw on Tuesday couldn't get anything good done at all, I tried today and got *both* done. I'm just learning painter (these are actually my second and third ever images) but I'm really starting to like the program.
I might post some of the sketches too later, if nobody objects?
Empty: I'd say it's still fine to put your cowboy up here, it's where it belongs. ;) A little leeway won't hurt the thread any IMO. Same goes for Sinix's entry when he gets his comp fixed.
Skank: I'm impressed! The difference from linework to colours is just nuts. You really nailed the method on your first attempt! :chug:
Have fun guys!

Don't worry Skank, my robot is well on the way and will be posted tomorrow (I've got work so it can't be today). I've really enjoyed doing this topic.
Your robot certainly does look intimidating there. I went for a similar line of thought, but from a different perspective...you'll see what I mean tonight! :evilbat:
I agree about something being better than nothing too. I'll put up my WIP when I get back tonight.
I think people should feel happy putting up sketches and prep work as opposed to just a final image, as it will help keep the thread going.

Holy crap.. has it really been 10 days since we had this challenge? Time certainly seems to fly.
Here's my entry, I never really draw any mechanical stuff, I should more.

So, what do you guys wanna do? Seems to be less entries lately. Maybe we need another person or so... I'm not sure who's turn it is to make a new topic.. Intern's I think, if you wanna throw one out.
Let's see more effort.

Well, when things go wrong, they do it in style.
After over two years without anything more than a minor fault, my PC has suddenly become SEVERELY unstable. Outlook has fudged altogether and kills the system as soon as you try to check for e-mail.
Anyway, I'm not just venting for the hell of it (honest!), basically I'm going to have to gut my system and start again from scratch, which means I may not be posting much in the next day or two. :(
It's not completely bad news though, I have managed to recover *some* stuff , one of the things being the work in progress that I was going to post the other day:
http://img27.photobucket.com/albums/v82/DaveTheOriginal/robotic_gladiator_work_in_progress.jpg
Sic8sic & Cartoonfox, welcome on board. :)
You guys can feel free to start right away, I think we're just waiting on Intern to name the next topic. Feel free to post any work in progress you want to share, as I'm sure we can all learn something from wips too.
Most importantly, have fun.

Dave, that's completely awesome, now my robot looks like even more of a complete wuss, damn you. :D
So, since there is more people.. let's just try to get a topic each week then fill up on concepts all week long. I guess the current topic creation order is:
Sinix - Davetheoriginal - Empty - Skank - lNTeRN - sic8sic - cartoonfox - insane visions(hopefully he's joining, that'd be awesome)
So, we'll give lNTeRN a day or two to make the next topic, if he doesn't get a chance to come around, we'll move to have sic8 make it. New people feel free to jumpin and make robot designs in the meantime if you can.

i'll also be right on top of this next one.
i really like the gladiators, so far. it's cool to see them colored to such an extent. someday i'll get better at coloring my stuff.

Wah, I still have a big case of the lazies... I'll edit this post with new stuff later today hopefully. I just realized that the more people there are, the less obligated I feel to get stuff up, not that people isn't a good thing, I just need to work on how often I draw.
Edit: Alright, I whipped something up... actually I just wanted to play around in photoshop, kinda messing with "prostate sunrise"'s style... or trying to somewhat. I'll add something or other, later.

Hey guys, I should be back now, hopefully my PC is back to normal (touchwood) so I'll be posting more again. :D
Sinix: Thanks for the comment, I don't know why, but as soon as I read that topic I just thought that my droid had to be damned scary for its opponent. Must get around to actually finishing that pic now...
I like your delta force guy, can definitely see the influence from prostate sunrise. I was thinking a adding a slightly more rich brown would look cool on the background to contrast the green.
I really like the colouring on the neck of the jacket. I know that sounds bizarre, but that bit just appeals to me!
Empty: It's cool seeing the thumbnails. Your bot looks like it could give my bot some trouble! :) The only thing bothering me is the legs. There doesn't look enough to them to support such a large frame.
Other than that, good job guys!
