In the past few years, we have seen the emergence of asian cultures in a big majority of artwork.

Before it was the mangakas, who used a lot of Western influences, like Lodoss, for example.

It's like movies, Oldwestern movies have influenced, Japanese and Hong-kong movies (John Ford inspired Kurosawa), and after it was the opposite stream kurosawa inspired Spielberg and Cameron which inspired Tsui Hark and John Woo which inspired Tarantino and Gans.

But their movies have less and less depth... And more and more artificial effects.

Is this for good ?
In a certain way, when we are inspired by something, we are more attached to the surface, the details, and not to the depth of the culture. We use only the superficial part, we don't learn all the history and all the culture.

I think we are approching a step, where we are all doing quite the same things, in all over the world.

Which part of the world will bring some fresh air ?

Brazilian people don't have the same histories, legend and myths, than Russians.
Perhaps it is time to read books from our own history and culture. It's time to bring, something close to ourselves, to the rest of the world, to enrich others culture...

Welcome to the present. Our technology is making the entire world more and more interconnected all the time. As a result there seems to be a merging of cultures, Japanese and American in paticular. New ideas don't arise from contact with other cultures only though. The real breath of fresh air comes from within, when an artist somewhere (anywhere!) gets so fed up with the same old same old that they snap and are driven make something completely unique, to break the mould (as far as that is possible at least).

I think many new ideas are probrably going to be coming from new discoveries that affect the scientific world view because that is where peoples minds are focused in this day and age. It used to be religion but science is the new religion (although many people don't believe this to be so as science is supposed to be "objective"...ha!).

I think it is easy to see all these superficial things because pop culture is ever present. Advertising is shoved in our face everywhere we go and usually it is designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Most popular blockbuster films are "uppers" without a lot of substance because most people go to movies to escape reality, not look at it more closely.

The good news is that now more than ever there are a number af less popular alternatives available that aren't shallow at all. Art is cheaper to reproduce now then it has ever been before in the course of history. The internet helps you to gain access to more obscure work and all it takes to see innovative ideas is a little bit of searching.

The things that seem shallow are just the most readily available. If you take time to explore different sub-cultues chances are you will find something that strikes a chord with you. I know I used to think that the current generations churned out nothing but crap, but when I began to search for things, rather than just looking at what appeared before me, I found a lot of interesting artists that are obscured because they can't be marketed to a mass audience.

I would be elated if Brazilian and Russian culture had more influence on mass media or even just on the international film scene. I personally believe the more variety the better, and every culture has something unique to offer.

The point is, you can sit around and ponder where the breath of fresh air will come from, but if you look closely that breath may have been sitting in front of your nose all along waiting for you to inhale.

This is a great subject, but I have to inform you that there is nothing new about Science being religion. Just look at Pythagoras and the rest of the Greek philosophers. The TRUE Greek religion was science. The world as we know it would be far more advanced if it weren't for world dominating religions putting a thumb down on human progression.

This world needs a NEW Renaissance. Rediscover science and art as the true human enrichment. This web site is a perfect example of art, science and multicultural people getting together and exchanging ideas. This would never have been possible, on this grand of a scale, in the old days. Awesome.

Personally, thanks to the internet, I have been able to search my roots and learn about different cultures which in turn has fueled my need to be creative.

Prost to humanity!!

as much as i love living in a Capitalistic nation,,, Capitalism by nature wants to strangle the quality out of the Arts. music,, cinema,, games,, illustration,, etc..

it drives me crazy.... being "origional" and a general "quality" artist, is no where near as stable and lucrative as the artist or art which imitates the flavor of the month.

to the men with the mony,, origionality is a risk and a gamble.

music is the best example... if and when i turn on mtv or the radio these days, i get the urge to light myself on fire.
it may be excruciating to me but the general public just wants someone to point them in a direction so they can walk somewhere..
which is fine by me,, but the problem is that this generation is only going to perpetuate that attitude.
this whole thing kinda perpetuates its self really.

I dont believe that there is presently a degridation in the arts in general. if anything, its stronger than ever,, you just gotta look beyond whats in your face. basically what SamusNeo said. :)

sorry Bone,, i strayed pretty far from your origional topic.
as far as art moving in new cultural directions,,, well,,, weve explored this planet pretty darn well, and broadcasted it to the world. we may have hit a wall in that dept. it is ultimately enevitable. but art is and has always been mooved in revolutions of culture,, religion, science, communication,, etc.
art will always be presented an obstical, and it will always overcome it through its nature of creativity. the present obstical is a worthy one,,, so the future should be interesting.

im tired now and i think i may be blabering pointlessly... ill stop.

fart,,,,,,,, sleep.....

If media continues to sample the same fruits things are going to get sour. Media picks fruits from around the world and trys to figure out what the general populus will consider to be ripe.

We can't have media boased on cowboys and yankees for the rest of our lives, that's way in the past for MOST of 'us'.

In fashion and in movies there has always been a strong cycle of using things retro. 50 movie's are being made alot lately and bellbottoms have made some what of a comeback. Picking from other cultures to add to our past 'flare' just seems like a natural thing to do things.

There is definately going to be a merge between cultures. and not just in art culture, not just western and Asian, but all cultures. Heres my hypothesis: The world economy is getting more and more computerized-especially western culture. now, most of the software is written in English. I beleive this will lead to eventual complete unification of one language, then the world will be more liberated from the "cultural barriers" than ever before. and aside from that, the internet will overcome racism. becuase screen names have no nationality and you are forced to be openminded to other people. forget the "digital age", this is the "Humanitarian age"!!:chug:
