Looks like an intersting thread to watch. I guess I'd need to see the movie to figure out your Cabin Fever pic - looks like Vindaloo fallout to me right now. ;)

Here's a question - when you're working to a time limit, do you consider what you're likely to acheive within that time and approach your pic accordingly, spending time only on important elements, or just take a run at it without much forethought and keep things fast and loose?

young paddy1
March 17th, 2004, 06:22 AM
working to a time limit I try to go for blocking everything in first then detailing that's why the scopes not done and there's no netting on his helmet or workings of the rifle.

AndI just noticed I missed the background between his face and the stock, bugger.

edit: BTW cabin fever is about a disease that makes you vomit up your own liquified inards.

you do some cool stuff on the computer (african warrior[people have been saying masai, I guess?], the 'messing w/ tools' wave, and this last robot, to name a few). I must admit that I like your digital stuff more than the pencil sketches, but you've got good stuff going on, and the more we draw, the better we get, right?

hey, thats the one! Small world we got here with this interweb or whatever you call it. Thats nuts. Would she know you (did you talk to her?) It's actually not surprising since she has lectured all over the world. She's in Istanbul right now. I'll have to tell her about this. (I could'nt really ask her if she knows a youngpaddy1 by name...)

Keep making those paintings. The second to last one is really bizzare (which is a good thing). Only advice is to paint from ref a little, it may not apply to those images directly but it will enhance your ability. The July 12th is looking good but the hand is a little weak because it looks like one mass. The biceps are also modeled a little too spherical.

Looking good man, I hope that crit helps.

I didn't meet her but I believe my lecturer had , it was a kind of mixed lecture about all different parts of aircraft mapping and FOF recognition systems, her name came up, must have been about two years ago, can't even rememberthe guest speakers' names, but your Mum's is a little unusual so it kinda stuck.

Hey paddy1,

Try giving it some harsher lighting and use more angular features instead of the roundness you are giving it currnetly. Sharper, harsher lines are associated with more predatory creatures, usually.

Hope that helps some.

Cheers,
~Oreg.

You could exaggerate his jawline a little in the profile, and make it look like he isn't smiling from the front. Maybe make him walk a little more hunched over like he is stalking something.

Do you trace your portraits before painting them. If so how do you feel about this technique? I did it a few times and it just didn't seem to feel right.

young paddy1
June 5th, 2005, 08:51 AM
nah just use the rulers in painter to line all the major bits up then draw the rest in free hand, or I have the original as a blanked out underlayer and keep flicking back and forth between them. Tracing feels a bit too much like cheating.

short fur is easy as long as no one wants too close a look, start with big darkish blobs then select a brush set the squeeze all the way down and the jitter all the way up, make it angle to direction and away you go. I used a motion blur to smooth it and a quick warp to shape the fur around body parts. For the tail I just increased the size of the brush and used a palette knife to curl it round.

What I appreciate about your work is that you work on different subjects. I've seen creatures, characters, and a couple of environments, whereas some artists just work on one specialty. :confident As much as I love Mr. Mullins' work, I don't see enough creatures outta that guy!

Magic Man

YoungPaddy, some realy nice stuff here - but there are things which I see as paint overs. I implore you not to do them because I think that they really are a waste of time, the skill that is used to create an image: values, color, structure, composition and anatomical knowledge, are all nullified.

I think you have a wonderful imagination, and it would be a great thing for you to start training your databank right now to store visual and foundational information through studies of foundation work, such as anatomy, lighting, rendering and such.

With your imagination paint pics I see a lot of potential in them, but there are a few things I'll point out:

- large areas: large brush, small details, small brush.

- learning to blend properly is also a good thing to learn - looks like you are working in photoshop, there are a number of ways to blend in photoshop, using textures, using the heal tool, using the smudge tool. Pick up a book on the subject of digital imagineering, since traditional work ca be emulated in ps but only by full understanding of the software itself, I rcommend Don Seegmiller.

- color theory: drill this much more, understand what makes a picture pop, how to direct the viewer's eye more, what are complimentary colors, how to use dessaturation, etc, Don's digital painting books go through this.

With your traditional pencil renderings:

- do not feather the lines, always use long smooth flowing lines, feathering makes things look very amatuerish, long smooth lines always, use a few well placed strokes to harden a line.

- try holding your rendering tool - pencil, whatever - like a pallette knife, and build up, never try to hit the value you want immediately, always layer it on so that if you make a mistake, its not a problem.

- composite the location + reference grids always before starting on the details, throw in the lines for the eyes, nose, mouth, centreline, ear line, etc, before actually roughing them out, will help you out immensely.

- increase your value range, it will make a figure pop, behind something you want to pop, throw down darker values, want something to meld, make sure th values are similar to whatever you want it to blend with.

Have fun and work hard.

Magic Man: That's one hell of a post, read through it a couple of times now, thanx for the advice, I'll keep it in mind and try to put it to use, BTW I'm using Painter, and you haven't seen any paint overs, unless I've marked it on there. I use the painter grid quite a bit though, and it still seems like cheating. Thanx again for coming by I really love your thread.

HI,,,

Thanks for the stop-by in my SB...

Just finished looking through your pages,,,whew,,, Really looks like you are working on a bunch of different interests....that is a great thing,,, I really think there is a lo to be said of folks who do that.

A couple different crits on a couple different things..

1.. The painter studies from life where you are toggling back and forth between the refference and the painting.....This is a good excercise,,I really think so,,,,,,,here is the thing though,,,,the finished piece will always look better than what you could do on your own,,so remember that it is a kind of assisted artmaking process......One really beneficial part of it is that you are internalizing a lot of info by "copying" as it were..... A really good thing to do after you are done with one of those is to take and do the whole thing over again, from memory,, with out the assistance of the original reff as a guide,,,,,Otherwise you have only learned so much,,,If you remember everything,, it is a good indicator of just how much you really have learned and not just translated into a different medium....just some advice,,,But it really worked for me in college when I would go to figure drawing,,,,,I would draw the model as they sat,,and then during the break, I would try to draw it again, from memory,,,,,,to really set it in my brain so I could use it for imaginative drawings as well....

2.. The drawings you are executing with the prismacolor and then embelishing with pen....... You could use the first step with the marker to lay down more of a ground and not just a rough of what you will later be outlining with pen,,,,,A good way to do it is to make a very light pencil drawing before the marker phase so when you do the marker it can be more of a blocking in kind of feeling than a construction feeling.......

3..The leads done from refference and from imagnation,,,,,,You could really stand to take your time more and lay things like construction shapes and that kind of shit down with a lot lighter hand,,,,,more shading and tone around the figures helps to establish more grounded feelings and mass with a higher degree of beleivability,,,,,The main thing though,,is to really take your time and not rush parts of the drawing that are just really detailed,,,,,A really good graphite is going to take a lot of time to lay out, work up the masses and hatching ( all before you even get into details ) and then work on the more finicky bits until you are completely satisfied with it...That is just the way it is hoo hummmm

Well I blabbed my little mouth off and typed my fingers down to nubs,,so I will cut it out now,,hehe...

Great work ethic and work,,,keep it up!!

Long time, no post. One good thing about going away from here for a bit is being able to see the advancements folks are making right away.

Just keep going.

The last one...if you want a crit. The painting lacks cohesiveness in the broad spectrum of things. Your skills are improving, but you need to look more into color theory.

Yp...keep rocking.

August 28th, 2005, 07:01 AM
Wow, you've come some way since I saw this SB, amazing, keep it up. You painter skills are clearly developing fast!

Your latest TD, Very cool pose, very cool demon.

Maybe some ANGRIER eyes. Not sure about the sword though. If the rings are decoration you need to show that more, the green colouring looks a little soft for metal.

As someone said ealier, more time in the drawing stage would smooth these things out. Redrawing particularly. I'm often suprised at how many imporvments seem to just happen by themselves when I redraw/ rethink my designs. It REALLY REALLY works!!

Also while there are lots of good points, all the black space is a glaring gap. With all this Lighting around, like the blue mage girl. some of the enviroment is going to show up. It really would bring the painting to life.
It could be really simple stuff, enviroments easy because it can never anatomically incorrect really.

Oh and this rules!

The room and the enviro on the top of this page rocks, man! More of those, please!

The figures you've got seem to have some anatomical issues.. like the relationship between their thighs and their shins...

Good lookin out!
