ROUND #218 :: The Lady of the Lake

DESCRIPTION

The Lady of the Lake

The Lady of the Lake is a mysterious character in the Arthurian Legends. She goes by many name and many stories. Some tell of her motherly side as she takes care of and raises Sir Lancelot, yet other stories emphasize her independent and powerful personality as she learns mystical magic from Merlin and eventually tricks him. It has also been said she offered Excalibur to King Arthur.

Design the Lady of the Lake!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_of_the_Lake
http://www.britannia.com/history/biographies/nimue.html

- Think of her personality: which side are you going to portray? How will you portray it?
- Beware that this is a character design challenge, not an illustration contest. Of course you are free to paint a beautiful setting, but the main focus should be on the character!

Good luck!

I went with the branch of the story where the Lady of the Lake uses Merlin to gain his magical knowledge, then traps him under a boulder.

Full of new magic skills, visions come to her.
Or maybe she just inhaled too much lake sludge...

Here is my entry. I created a character with the title "Lady of the Lake". She is a high priestess and honoring Arthurian myth, she gives Excalibur to Arthur. It was a bit of a struggle for me this week. I tried a few new things out and realized that they didn't work for me. Though that in itself is valuable.

Couldn't Pass this up:) Went with the traditional, I guess popular version. She handing the sword to King Author as he awaits his destiny.

Be blessed and enjoy

Mine also says it's violated...I updated an edited version and might have cut it close, is that the reason?

It seems the photobucket.com banning police have been busy again :(. Sometimes (quite randomly) photobucket thinks images are unappropriate because of nudity or gore. This is photobuckets policy, not CA's. Unfortunately, we HAVE to use photobucket for the poll. But this time they seem to be really picky, I don't really understand it either, especially Angel Intheuk's image. We cant do anything about this. I wish there was another way for us too upload the images, so we could avoid this censorship... Next time keep in mind, if you want to get to poll not to show to much nudity. (As if photobucket should decide whether or not something is "too nude"... blegh I hate censorship)

Mincx
October 18th, 2010, 07:31 AM
Ahh I see! That's a shame. At least I'll get some more practice drawing clothing. Well let's hope they don't get too picky with the gore or else next weeks Chow won't go down too well!

Damn photobucket, I thought I was being quite discreet with the nudity there, but the ass-crack obviously was too much :( nevermind though, it was a fun topic and I learnt alot :D good luck everyone

My favourites are:

PxelSlayer, Openanewworld, Jouste, arisun, Janjager, Lodin and Monotony - all were unique and captured the legend well :D

UAngelblade: I like the idea of her being giant, and the colours are striking, but I think you need to work on perspective and anatomy.

Art4All: Nice composition and effects. The design of the lady herself could be a bit more creative.

corni: I really like the way you painted her, but she just looks like a woman with a sword. I don't really see anything that suggests The Lady of the Lake.

tbaldree: Awesome style, awesome colours, awesome composition, awesome everything really! :asspat: And the blood from the sword is badass.

Mincx: Really creepy, but I don't think it fits the character. It's a good creepy killer witch, not a good Lady of the Lake.

jouste: Love it! Very original interpretation that still stays true to the character, and I love the energetic composition and clean line style.

Krisjoe: I really like your design of the Lady, and the backgrounds nicely done, but the way her cloak's floating dosen't look right.

rgeorge: I love the atmosphere you created in your image. The design on the sword handle in really off putting though, it seems too short and wide.

Lodin: Awesome. 'Nuff said.

poteTOES: I love your character design and composition. But it looks somehow unfinished to me, maybe the quality of the lines is too rough? And just to nitpick, the crown's a wee bit squint.

FilRam: Cool composition, and creative character design. The sword and face look like sketches to me, maybe that was the style you were going for.

Ruri: Crappy Mike Mignola ripoff.

Onique: The sky, trees and water are great, but there's just something too modern about her face and pose.

Arisun: Just awesome. I love your style, the muted colours, and the way you incorporated the Celtic maze.

jrbarker: I'm no expert, but I think there might be anatomy issues here, and the sword seems too short. Background also looks kind of rushed. I like the face and composition.

Prince G: I like the splash effect and the background. Her expression is a little odd though, she almost looks cross eyed.

Gavin.Gray: Nice costume design. I think the background looks a little lumpy.

caanan02: Pretty epic looking! And it really has that underwater feel. I think you needed to put more emphasis on the lady herself, however, and the composition is comes across a bit flat looking.

Migsta: I like the glowing bits and the glowing Excalibur. Her pose feels a bit generic, though.

PxelSlayer: Great colours and textures, her hair is especially cool.

Thélema: Reminds me of Harley Quinn from Batman Arkham Asylum. Interesting take on the character, but I don't think it really fits.

monotony: Great composition and style, and a really interesting atmosphere. It almost looks like she's drowning.

JanJager: There seems to be something off about the way she's standing to me. Cool mysterious atmosphere.

SunRoamer: I got to say, I liked the sketch where she was a silhouette with eyes better than the final version, it had a really great atmosphere. I like her pose a lot, she looks like she's just chillin' and like "'sup?".

echoless: I love the bizarre contrast between between the amphibious fishy face and the medieval lady dress. The big floating head really hurts the image as whole to be honest, it just dosen't seem necessary.

Lianti: You got the skills to pay the bills painting-wise, but to be brutally honest, I find the character design pretty boring.

Angel Intheuk: Interesting pose, and the water's really nicely rendered. The sword looks a little lumpy in places.

Sean McClain: Nice expressionistic style. There's something weird about the knight's arm, though.

AlotAbitAlittle: I really like the dark and light in your image, her expression and the water floating around the sword. Is there any thematic reason for her to be pregnant though?

Obstfelder: Wow, VERY original design! I love the seaweed skirt, the crazy geometric shapes, the ring she's holding, and her statue-like face. All round cool.

CrookedHorn: Maybe looks a bit too young and girly. Like the glowy look.

openanewworld: Looks like Princess Zelda! The ice is a great idea.

Lewis: Really nice colours, and I like the way the hair merges with the background. I think you needed to include something like the sword though, to make it The Lady of the Lake, and not just an underwater woman.

Windsrock: There's something really weird about the way her head connects to her neck, and the angle of her dress in the water seems wrong. Nice bright colours, though.

Annnd that's it. Don't think I missed anyone.:yayca:

RuriThank you for the crit! I was thinking of the motherly side. A bit astray from the history and perhaps too abstract.

Anyone else?!? I would really like to get better and it is tough for me to get on to the thread during the week to get 'in progress' crits. I would really really appreciate some advice, critique..etc.

I worked really hard as have many others yet have gotten so few votes. I understand votes are not the measure of success, but that is the fun of Chow and it is a decent measure of popularity and skill. Is there something I could work on? I spent many hours rendering her, and I truly want to get better.

A lot of nice pictures.

Jouste: Fresh idea, I like it.
Monotony: Great scenery
Openanewworld: I envy you for bringing a picture down with so many strokes. How long did it take to complete the picture ? Did you start a bw version and used a color layer obove ? the ice is a nice idea, but I would like to see arthur on the picture, like in the other sketch. Very inspiring, it rmembers me that I need to train to be more simple.

Pixelslayer:
Sweeeeeeet job on this one. You have the ability to hold back on colors and saturation, something I still struggle with. ^^ *COLORFLASH*

Fianti: Very realistic and great skin, you are very skilled.

Lodin: Nice, nice, very good rendering and WIP process. To be honest, I liked the sketch better, where you can see her legs. At first glance I thought: "What that thing coming out of the water ?"
