Hey everyone,

Here are some more live demos for my Art Center entertainment class...

This time demonstrating painting from "scratch"....basically, start w/ a blank canvas and just paint, no pre-line drawing.

I didn't have too much time for this sunset one, so it's a bit sloppy. About 45~ min, painter 6. It's very John Berkey inspired.....he is one of my favorite painters...

Second underwater piece started as a quick demo to show my girlfriend how painter works, then i decided to finish it. Took about 2 hours.

These are fun to paint, so i plan to do a few more. Next time i want to spend more time and really get into it......but free time is a rarelity these days for me.......

Feng, these are as great as I expected them to be when I clicked on this thread...
Do you also work with traditional media and would you be as fast with real oils/acrylics as you are with Painter?

The way you colour is so impressive, the soft values and striking little details, very well done. i can see why you chose to finish the bottom one, there's a certain amount of awe when drawing those Big spaceships or any ultra huge machienery.

the top image reminds me alot of the craft from close encounters during the end credit sequence when it is floating away across the screen.

Left my seat to get a cup of coffee, but I clicked the link to this thread as I got up. When I came back I nearly dropped that cup of coffee - the images had loaded.

Amazing. 45 min? Jeezz. Any wip shots in existence?

All these demo pieces have been stunning - great work, Feng.

I notice there are some quite broad brushtrokes on these two - I wonder if you choose to work at a low-ish resolution when time is an issue ( class demos and so forth ), in order to keep Painter's speed up..?

I love the color palette on the first one! it's lively and loose but the shapes are sharp or soft right where they need to be.

the second is also good, but I don't like it as much as the first. too clean? maybe more grey-blues bubbles might help?

You wouldn't by any chance be making another Gnomon DVD covering a Painter tutorial would you?

Awesome feng these are fantastic...The fact that you can do these type of things in two hours is a testament to your years of hard work with perspective, etc... Really is a treat to see these...definitely post more of this type of thing!

Feng, I think you've always been a good designer, but you are really blossoming as an all around artist. I don't think you could've pulled off something like that first one even two years ago... certainly not in that amount of time. Cool stuff man!

got to love those shark submarines...really good paintings if you consider the speed when you're doin' them. But in the first one i can't figure out how big is the ship. There is a distance between the people and the ship in the foreground but it's not definite. Anyway...superb!

I would be interested to know how you go about such pieces. Does "no lineart" mean you went to class without knowing what you will paint or did you already had an idea of the final picture?

I think itīs very interesting to learn more about how clear your vision of the picture normally is when you start out- and whether it still happens to you that you you decide to change important aspects while you are working on it.

These are beautiful Feng.

I'm curious...When did you learn to paint? I haven't seen much color work from you until recently, so I was wondering if this is something you've been studying more in depth lately or is it something you've been able to do for a while and have simply kept out of sight?

Again these are beautiful...and so freakin fast.

Hey everyone,

sorry for the late reply, past two days have been really busy.

Just filmed an episode for Monster Garage.....that Jesse guy and his crew are pretty crazy.....cool stuff they do on that show.

Anyways, i'll try to answer some questions..

First off, yes, i owe pretty much all this painting stuff to my friend Ryan. He's taught me a lot about digital painting, and gave me the motiviation to try it myself. Erik also gave me some really good painting tips when i was still working up there. But it all comes down to practice....which i still need a lot more to catch up to those guys...=)

Matt Dixon : Yes, i start the paintings at lower res, then once the composition is set, i res it up super high...probably 3 - 4 times the original size. I like to leave some of the original brushes on there..espeically in the background areas...it automatically gives you that looseness you need....

Carlo: thanks man! I've been studying your techniques on my end as well. You are damn good....

Guage: No, i don't have any plans for a painting DVD right now.....but just get Ryan's. I learned a lot from those DVDs....really good.

Tedsuo: Thank you. NO, two years ago....i won't even know where to start. I used to paint in school, but after, i stuck w/ markers for many years. I'm just now getting back into painting again.....very challenging...a different way of thinking...

MrD: Yeah, no line-art means i just started w/ a blank canvas with no pre-thought out idea (kinda shows tho..haha). I usually don't have a pre-planned thing for class demos. I just go in and do it.

Skeezer: i've been trying to learn how to paint since August...done a lot of stuff for work and freelance....but i just can't post those here. So i've been slowly ramping up......a lot more to go to reach where i want to be.

k, gotta get to work...

best,

-feng

I just got the Ryan Church dvd3 today.. it's awsome to watch.. really inspired me to start more digital :D lots of techniques i would have never guessed :D

Love your work feng. Hope to see some of it up close @ 3dfestival this year. Hear you are having a workshop ?

What brushes you using to get this slick style out of your paintings? If you dont want to share a secret thats a ok with me. Just wondering as a beggining digital painter.

OF course i cant speak on behalf of Feng, but seeing as Church helped him alot on digital techniques and having just seen one of his gnomon dvds (ryan churchs) i think the thing is to start in small image and loose strokes. And then when something pops out you want to work on enlarge the whole thing.
Then start adding in detail. I think he does this by say lights. Make a new layer, and pain the lights there, and then on that layer erase the parts that should be hidden behind something in the foreground for instance and when done with that addition merge the 2 layers. Continue that way by painting new things on seperate layer, and merging them when done :D

Hope that helped a little.

I highly reccomend watching thoose ryan church dvds for painter tecchniques. It's awsome some of the tricks he teaches during that 2 hour session :D
