October 9th, 2010, 12:52 AM

October 9th, 2010, 04:57 AM
Chaos glad to see you back.
I'm in! You know I draw everything if you just put "steampunk" before the topic title...
I'll put so much steam in this environment that you won't be able to see the train station.
October 9th, 2010, 05:25 AM
Welcome back crx, hope all is well.
This topic sounds like fun, think Ill try put something together.
October 9th, 2010, 02:43 PM
does it needs to be strictly victorian in the details? or we can borrow from styles alike
October 9th, 2010, 07:27 PM
Nice topic! I wish I had time to join in but I'll be away. I look forward to seeing everyone's entry!
October 10th, 2010, 09:03 AM
noche, look up steam punk..... the style is the definition. you can place it at any place or time.... but the aesthetic has to be steamppunk...
October 10th, 2010, 10:09 AM
I'm in. Can't wait to get started, actually.
October 10th, 2010, 01:31 PM
Here's my sketch -- I hope to get a bunch more done today... we'll see what happens.
Here's the (tentative) final:
October 10th, 2010, 08:11 PM
matt kohr: that looks awesome. Lovely stuff indeed!
I really hope I get time to join in, it has been so long and I have missed EOW's in my schedule!
October 10th, 2010, 09:34 PM
Cool idea, I'll see if I can give this a whirl
@matt kohr good stuff champ, thats looking great.
October 10th, 2010, 10:47 PM
hmmm, ive been meaning to join in the EOW for a few weeks, this is right up my alley, gonna give it a shot
October 11th, 2010, 06:37 AM
Okay, here is the very basic layout though I will try to embellish as I go along. I have not put people in yet but I will.
October 11th, 2010, 06:49 AM
i like cheese and this eow
October 11th, 2010, 09:35 AM
Here is my concept, this is the second time I have drawn with a wacom.
BTW - Background is at 50% opacity so you can see the train drawing.
October 11th, 2010, 04:14 PM
Next stage for me. Getting there slowly but surely.
October 11th, 2010, 08:50 PM
I did some re-modeling of the woman in the foreground and started laying in colour. Still a lot to do but I am having fun which is always good. :)
October 11th, 2010, 11:32 PM
O_O nice work guys
October 12th, 2010, 04:38 AM
I'll have to look up reference and do some studies cause swirly details aren't my strong suit.
This is all I've got so far :/ I'll do some more thumbs.
October 12th, 2010, 01:39 PM
OMG Matt, your contribution is awesome.
October 12th, 2010, 04:28 PM
I might make some changes toward the end, (after some time away from it) but I think for now, this is done.
October 14th, 2010, 10:16 AM
looking good every one!
having a hard time with this one... maybe I will finish it in time, maybe not.
zimfin: the stair is looking a little bit like a ramp (firstthing I noticed) the rest of the painting looks awesome!
October 14th, 2010, 04:15 PM
Ill have to agree. My biggest gripe with the stairs is that, in real life, there is randomness in things like this. Stairs are not perfectly kept, straight pattern and without any cracks or imperfections. Try adding some dirt or randomness to the stairs.
Also, I don't know how this would screw with your layers, but the architecture for the ceiling in the BG looks too plain. It looks like it's metal, so maybe if there were some reflective parts to it. It might also be cool if you made some of the sections of the ceiling stained glass.
October 15th, 2010, 08:04 AM
Thanks Mubanga and thescala! You are right about the stairs and bg.
I need to work on them. Originally you were supposed to be able to see through the steps and that dark diagonal area behind the robot was supposed to be the bottom of the landing. I then realized that this did not work in perspective with the people on it so I thought it could be used as a shadow instead. Unfortunately that is adding to the ramp effect. I will work on it and probably try the stained window idea. Nice one!
October 16th, 2010, 01:27 PM
steam punk station
October 16th, 2010, 06:27 PM
Awesome work here. I love this topic.
Only have time to make a sketch but IŽll try to work it out in photoshop... I hope iŽll finish on time.
Please comment me if you like the idea. Streching the scale.
Everybody thank you for the atmosphere, you can smell the steam and the coal burning.

October 16th, 2010, 08:46 PM
Good to see you on track. I hope you are fine.
Awesome. Wonderful mood and rendering.
I like your picture. Very fine details. The light is coming fine. Feels harmonic. Only crit is the ellipses on the train and headlight.
Wonderful sketch. I like the stem technology mixed with the futuristic big scale tech. Its not only railway station with stem trains, Its a steampunk train station
You got the light playing in the stem very good. Perhaps dampen the bridge over the track. To get it more in the distance.
Good start. Be careful to have the ellipsis right on the wheels.
I like the forms. Looking forward to see more.
October 16th, 2010, 10:44 PM
i think i am having problems attaching imgs, is there a standard way of doing it?
October 17th, 2010, 01:33 PM
Thanks for the advice JanJager.
October 17th, 2010, 04:47 PM
glad that EOW is back, to bad i only realised it today, i've been doing lot of enviro sketches from sight so next round i'm probably in. and all the topics are usually awesome here.
nice paintings going on, matt khors beeing my fav so far. awesome man.
vitrubius, your sketch has a lot of potential, looking forward to see the progress.
zimfin, i like yours, maybe the train seems a little bit compressed, but is ok spit of that. i would also leave the robot and the lady upstairs more visible, as they are in the b/w version of the painting. because they have a strong pose and therefore they add dynamic to the image.
JenJager, looking good so far, like the crazy guy on the left side and the whole "in a rush" feeling
October 17th, 2010, 06:53 PM
This turned out pretty sloppy, and not very steampunk-y, and not very focused on the station. :\
October 18th, 2010, 08:40 AM
Great topic and great entries. Too bad I noticed this one too late. Still wanted to give it a try so here's a dirty sketch of something I might not be able to finish in time. Don't mind the terrible perspective errors, especially on the windows. :)
October 18th, 2010, 11:26 AM
vitrubius your "sketch" is amazing. i will vote for that one
October 18th, 2010, 11:41 AM
I worked on mine after some helpful crits, trying to address various issues. Hopefully it looks better to you guys. I still would not call it finished yet but I might not have time for more. Here is what I have so far.
Oops, that is the flipped version. I prefer it the other way and I have seen something which needs sorting!
October 18th, 2010, 02:30 PM
Well, until the finals thread is up and running, here is my final image. I am open to changes though if something is off and worth fixing so feel free to comment if you like. Thanks for the help already received!

Zimfin, I can't help but think that the front ellipse on the train is too tall. it doesn't look circular. Everything else looks great.
michaelloves, Lots of great atmosphere but light on details. Mood and feel of a scene are important, but IMHO if it's to be concept art you need a little more information on how that environment is built, what materials are used, what the individual areas look like when not obscured by steam. Keep in mind that if you were designing and environment on a professional basis, some poor modeler would have to try to make a level out of that image :)

Thanks! It does not have to be completely circular, does it? It looked really elliptical at one point and I altered it but now I am pretty happy with it. It will just have to be a slightly elliptical steam train for now. :)

I still think that my sketch is still better than the painting but iŽm still learning. The next time IŽll rock... or the next.
Matt. I love the way you use the light and the characters are great. When I grow old I want to be like you.
Zimfin.. you work very hard... the paint goes better and better each time.
Reedux... Go ahead that thumb is wanting to grow, has al lot of movement.
Michaelloves... I like a lot the light of your work and i still can smell the coal o that train.
Janjager You really know how to use the light... your work is very suggestive.
Mr pink My favorite... so quick.. so powerful.
Andre rubenThanks for the support I hope you like the final one.
Nicktrip ThatŽs a train... I canŽt get all those details... mines are more simple.
Ismo Loose style but has a good sense of depth.
Hope you like mine... please comment.
Thankyou to you all.
October 18th, 2010, 05:43 PM
thanks for the advice karyl. with this one i definately got too caught up with the atmosphere within the piece. the brief said steam and victorian details not just steam.
October 19th, 2010, 03:14 AM
Not real happy with it.. and interiors are definitely not my strong suit.
I'd appreciate comments and crits :)
October 19th, 2010, 12:33 PM
@cegan: I think it's too soft. Some hard edges and areas in clear focus will help the environment feel more "real" and less "ethereal". Also, watch your scale. The guy on the platform looks like he's 10ft tall and there's a toy train coming into the station. Make sure the pieces fit together.
October 19th, 2010, 10:20 PM
So many awesome ideas in here. I cant wait to see all the finished works, I don't think I'll finish this one, but I'm liking the feel.
Matt Kohr: Great work, I absolutely love that piece.
Cegan: I like the lighting a lot, just seems the perspectives are a bit off. It might be from all the soft edges. I find myself fleshing things out with a soft brush a lot, I get an ear full from everyone lol. Its always a good Idea to straighten and make sure everything is in place before adding extreme detail. Its easy to get lost in all the soft edges otherwise. HARD BRUSHES FTW!
October 20th, 2010, 06:23 AM
Thanks for the critiques guys, it definitely looks a lot better now.
There's still perspective errors, but at this point I don't think they're fixable unless I start over. Perspective is definitely my weakness.. should have known better, haha.
October 20th, 2010, 11:58 AM
cegan, it does look better, but there are still issues as you've mentioned. Next time, plan out your perspective and take the time to draw vanishing points and guidelines, all that stuff. Once you do that enough times you can start to fake it for speed, but doing it the long way will really help at first.

Great entries so far!!
Sadly I must take back what I said... I'm working day and night and I don't think I'll be able to submit something.
October 27th, 2010, 05:52 AM
I'm new here so I don't know well how everything works here.
I want to participate aswell. I started making already the drawing. here is already a wip
edit; the drawing is finished. I really enjoyed drawing this. I never did something like this before.
October 28th, 2010, 07:41 AM
Nawww! I'm so gutted I missed this, didn't even know it was running!
Wonderful entries everyone!
Ismo I really like your train. Super-mass transport! :D It's caught the essence of the Victorian notion of travel and adventure!
October 28th, 2010, 06:04 PM
