View Full Version : IDW # 141 : Arctic Rally Vehicle
October 5th, 2010, 11:57 PM
Topic: Arctic Rally Vehicle
The Tri-Mael Arctic Rally is fast becoming one of the most watched events in the world. Global cooling has started and more land than ever before is covered in ice and snow which enables the track this year to be the longest and most complex of all. Your task is to design a vehicle that will provide the winning ride for this rally. Remember this vehicle must be able to withstand the rigors of slick ice, deep snow, rocks, wind and cold.
Inspiration and Info:
Arctic Lapland Rally Homesite (http://www.arcticrally.fi/)

1. Design and draw an Arctic Rally Vehicle.
2. That's it... now draw! :lifedrawing:
Final entries must be posted in the final thread.
Deadline: Wednesday, October 13
Rounds usually close around midnight GMT.

this could be fun- might have a go!

I want to join in, so i'm going to try to make something. Cars make a good challenge!
This is what I've got so far:
A sheet of thumbs
Views of the car
And a really rough sketch to start the painting
Here's the final lines I'm going to try to make the painting with. Wish me luck!
Ok, I've blocked in the values for the painting. The next step is to tint my greys and try to render everything out. Unfortunately it's looking more like an arctic mini van right now....
And here's a color test for the color scheme I'm planning on using
I've decided to try out a different color scheme. I'm going to move forward with something similar to this.
This is the opaque color part of the process. The last step now is to glaze on the rest of the colors.
Yeah the new glazing medium didn't work. Sure I was a little aggressive with the color, but that was sorta the point of the experiment. Anyway, I'm going to try to wrap this up digitally.
Ok all done.

Sorry about my Epic Fail last week. To make up for it, I'm going to join this one, and hopefully future ones.

Awesome topic to be my first challenge! Already started working on it :)
October 6th, 2010, 05:24 PM
Nice topic, gonna try harder on this one. :)

Here's a sketch of what I'm planning to do. Inspired by Ken Block :D

I will finally stop lurking just for this challenge. This is too awesome to pass up.

diCharge: Looking good! Just double check that the width of both treads to make sure they're equal. I also think you'd be able to see a bit of the fourth tread on the far side. :)

Here's a sketch of what I'm planning to do. Inspired by Ken Block :D
Wow, this is EXACTLY what I was imagining.
October 8th, 2010, 04:05 PM
Yeah, Ken Block's STI on tracks is basically what I had in mind. Also taking inspiration from the Baja 1000, and Group B.
But when I think of "arctic rally", I think of lots of long flat stretches of snow and ice, rather than your usual twisty mountain roads. Hence longer wheelbase, since it's no longer about making tight turns at high speed.
Can't have slick treads, now.

Just a really quick sketch and colour block. Was thinking of something a little rounder than the traditional car model. woops left my brush in when i took the screen shot

Good to have much off a sport car in the design. A also like the combined skies and front wheels.
Seems like a fast Vehicle . Looking forward to see how it develops especial how you do the front.

Check this out guys- pretty epic in my opinion - LINK (http://www.ecofriend.org/entry/eco-cars-think-frost-electric-car-for-arctic-explorers/)
And on a more current day path with a description of the necessary modifications. It might give you and idea of the things that are vital in the design- LINK (http://www.pickuptrucks.com/html/stories/arctic/polar1.html)

wow that is very impressive, wouldnt mind having that in my garage......and living somewhere that actually has snow.
October 10th, 2010, 05:23 AM
good work guys
October 11th, 2010, 03:00 PM
Nice entries everyone!
Could you please help me decide whether should I add snow on top of my design or not? Whichj of these do you think look better:
October 11th, 2010, 03:25 PM
I cant upload my wip because ca is screwing with me. But just imagine a really cool image right here below this text. :)
I would go with the one without snow. Makes the design clerarer and easier to understand imo.
October 11th, 2010, 04:56 PM
I would go without snow.
Cool design a bit ww1 tank. Looks like it can take hard terrain without problem
Hope you can solve the problem with uploading.

This looks like something that I might have to join. Too bad that my ideas suck, though.
October 11th, 2010, 09:34 PM
Do it Fighting Seraph!!!!!!
October 12th, 2010, 04:44 AM
So wait, there's no time setting?
It could be a futuristic neopunk vehicle or a 10'000 year old stone carriage?
October 12th, 2010, 08:36 AM
There is no time setting stated, but as global cooling was mentioned as was wold wide watching, and even the term rally, I think its safe to say the future. :) It would be awesome to see a 10, 000 year old carriage but it just doesn't fit the specs, expecially the speed ones! :P Futuristic neopunk is a-ok though.
Finals is up!

I really like your Idea JanJager! You've figured it out well!
Any suggestions on how could I make this better? :)
October 12th, 2010, 02:06 PM
First post here. I see some really talented people here and was a little bit confused about my first WIP shown here. My own 3d-reference was used for the basic shape, I hope this is not against the rules.
October 12th, 2010, 07:38 PM
Welcome Elbi! 3D is fine as long as it is used as a guide and painted over afterwards. :)
October 13th, 2010, 09:43 AM
Here's my WIP... Hopefully I will find some time to get in some changes before submitting the final. :)
Everyone seemed to be doing things with tracks so I wanted to make something more akin to "rocket sled" lol
October 13th, 2010, 02:45 PM
Hopefully I will be able to upload my design in the finals thread. Spent so much time on it. So it would be a real shame if ca is messing with me today aswell.
October 14th, 2010, 04:09 AM
This is literally all i used, i leave it to you
October 14th, 2010, 11:20 PM
All good entries! Great challenge, I'll definitely do more.
October 16th, 2010, 03:40 PM
Thanks. Sorry for late answer had to go away for a couple of days. Like your design. I think looking at ref pictures of how shadows and reflections work is very helpful. Perhaps clean up flat surfaces.
