Spartan Camp #153- 50 gestures + Optional "Skin Study"
The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 10th of October.
- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!
- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Skin Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:
Whether it be a skin color study or a skin fold study, the wrinkles in your hand or of a laughing face, interesting animal skin textures or aged skin, or perhaps a master study to figure out how an other artist handles skin. Make sure this study focuses on skin, or put some extra focus on skin. Give it some thought! Convincing skin can be difficult to pull off, especially when in color. Black/white or Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Have fun!
50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.
Critting each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference and resources!! Let's help each other get better!
Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

Hi, it's my first time in Spartans and I humbly present my gestures (posemaniacs and character design). I tried to do 30 sec at first, but decided that they need more love ;) I'll definitely post skin study later this week.

New faces, hi :D
Well no life drawing for me last week, in fact, we have no life drawing classes at all for 4 weeks straight - baww. I'll head to the open workshop if I have the time, I guess...
And the Animation Workshop misplaced my portfolio >:[
anyway, did some 30 second gestures tonight using http://www.pixelovely.com/tools/gesture.html

I also drew a lot of strange and inappropriate stuff while livestreaming, huzzah

I have absolutely no idea what to do for the skin study. Everything is new to me and I don't know where to start!

Hmm well, get picture of skin, try to paint something with the same colours and texture.
That is my guess!

Exactly - though I would start with colors only... well I never ever did anything with texture so far, I guess I should...
The most basic thing I learned skin shouldn't be a simple gradient, it need some slight blush here and there.
Then came this famous link: http://www.furiae.com/index.php?view=gallery, tutorials/thoughts on skintones... It's limited to light skin.
I met way more difficult techniques but those are too much for me right now.
I'll try to draw a smiling young face, I never could do it properly, the folds made them older...
This week I was busy or lazy till now, I'll add pictures later today.
EDIT:
It was tiring... Maybe it would be better not to redraw every pic a few times... whatever. It took about one hour...?
I mostly used low resolution stock photos. Lines are still go wherever they want but it felt good to practice again.

I tried to do my foot in Photoshop because when I was trying to decide what skin to draw, my foot was right there in front of me. I think I got the colors close to accurate (or at least from my laptop). But I struggled with the wrinkles and lights and shadows. I may try to sketch a close-up of my skin on paper this weekend if I find the time. This is fun, though. I'm quite enjoying Spartan Camp. And advice is always welcome. I am a complete newbie that is here to learn.

brambor; wonderful! Nice variety. You also keep the organic feel even after you use construction on those figures. I'd always recommend some gestures of your own in between, to challenge the mind. The heads can be trouble sometimes. You can always do some separate anatomy studies there. Head/neck area can be tricky.
krisCrash; Misplaced? what does that mean? rejected? or some mistake? Shame to hear about the lifedrawing classes. That seemed like a particularly effective course. Don't let what's learned slip away! Those figures look nice. It's a nice reference source, although its a shame you cant browse trough the database quickly. There are some confusing poses too, although that may actually be good. Drawing while watching livestream or other things never works for me - always turns out strange.
BlackDelphin; I like how experimental these are, how you've tried different things and are not afraid to take risks. Thats commendable. You seem to do a lot of exploring while actually drawing, so you may want to lower brush opacity or size a little. So your own lines don't get in the way. Also, drawing without correcting (such as with pen) may be interesting, to practice some line economy and confidence. Just ideas ideas!
Karshia; welcome again! Nice going, I think you were successful at capturing some of the essence in those poses. Its interesting how the ones from imagination keep a lot of those organic lines and the fluid feel from your posemaniac studies. The poses are less daring though, feel free to experiment here and try things out! I like the detailed figure, especially because of those smaller studies in preparation. Think the result is nice, you've only lost a little sense of depth, perhaps because of the random line weight. Good going!
Eiki; Those are amazing! Those value studies - even if they may take a lot of time and effort - are great exercises. The three-dimentional feel in some of these is really strong. Sometimes it takes just a very very small shift in value to sell the illusion. Next step may be to include hard and soft transitions? Or perhaps I'm pushing it too much ;). Great to see these!
Bit uninspired this time...

I got rejected for admission this year, not good enough it seems. But yes, they also misplaced my portfolio - but the situation is resolved. Because I had written them to ask for critique, someone had decided to look it over again so it was in another office. They never sent me those crits though. Sooo I am a little dejected with their office order at the moment.
Well I was not watching a livestream, I was drawing and others watched my stream. I do that from time to time, people seem to like watching artists draw.
