Spartan Camp #152 - 50 gestures + Optional "Style Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 3rd of October.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Style Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:
Choose and explore a certain style by doing a study. There is a myriad of options here, ranging from the stylistic footprint of your favourite artists (Leyendecker, Mucha, Frazetta, Schiele?), art periods or movements (realist, impressionist, classicism... cubism?), or that of a certain brand or company (disney), as well as anime/manga. These are fairly random examples and I may be breaking the boundaries of the term 'style' here, but I'm sure you get the idea. Remember- it's still a study, so try and capture the elements that define this particular style. You can study the original work or use it as reference material for a study of your own. You're not confined to gestures either. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Have fun!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Critting each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

Kicking off!

First scan is left-handed posemaniacs, noticed I had trouble with right-handed afterwards. Odd.
Scans 3-7 are without particular reference. Took a while to warm up. Used my own hands though.

This week was exceptionally bad, I looked at drawing tools like I never saw them before and did nothing.
Now I try again. My lines are wavering. I don't know if it even can be changed. Probably not, I very often miss buttons and keys too.
My self confidence is zero but I will draw something else too, of course.

Anthis: Watch out for proper eye alignment... Head tilting is problematic, I know. (I hope I'm understandable, I feel my English is worse than usual.)

I'm new to art... I'm a beginner in the truest sense of the word. I have no idea what I'm doing. But I'm learning. I'm planning on starting a sketchbook as soon as I get brave enough to display my lack of experience. For now, I thought I might join these gesture drawings as a way to learn and keep motivated. I also have no idea what I'm doing with my new scanner. So please forgive me these drawings.

These took 30-60 seconds using an online model.

Another bunch. I think I simply can't draw quickly at all. My new pen feels so strange, too quick and slick... I hope I will get used to it soon.

EDIT: I switched to Tegaki. I started with silhouettes because I can do them quickly, I needn't to be precise right away - and I can draw in lines and ribcases and whatnot to my heart's content.
Then I changed tip in my pen, it seems slower lines aren't wavy now. Yay.

Karshia: Welcome! :) Not a bad start I guess, your gestures are usually clear, proportions are okay too :) And you needn't to have anything but a few drawings to start a sketchbook here... Don't let the quality of the experienced ones scare you away ;)

shiNIN: Thank you. I checked out your sketchbook and you have already come a long way. It's very inspirational because of the progress and the fact that you have maintained it for over 2 years!

I tried to make a Disney-style drawing of my daughter. It looks nothing like her. But I think it does look a little Disney-ish. I have no idea how to color yet, so I will have to leave it as it is for the time being.

Karshia: thanks :)

My optional... I was tired and I CAN'T draw clear lines anyway... But I guess it's fun, I plan to do it in the future too and put my results here... I wanted to draw Silver in the style of Sarai-ya Goyou as well (I like that anime, it inspires me but the drawing style is something one needs to get used to =) Mouth is closer to the chin than to the nose).
Seires no Moribito has a similar character as Silver in it so I wasn't very creative here.

shiNIN: Noticed it when I scanned- what a mess. Decided to leave it at that though, better start new ones instead. Thanks for telling again, bad mistake :|.
The nice thing about the tegaki ones is that you've seemed to give yourself some breathing space to try things out. Nice stuff there, fun sketches. Artistically, posemaniacs is somewhat limited anyways, hehe. Seirei no moribito is a nice one, ood to hear that name, I've always felt it was underrated.

Karshia; Welcome! I support shiNIN. Take your time to look around these forums a bit. The place has grown pretty big and helpful topics can be somewhat scattered. Some people have them listed in their signatures though. I think this is a great place for learning, so be welcomed and have fun!
You've done a nice job on keeping the flow in those poses, using a line along the spine. It's also helped with the proportions and foreshortening, nice job. You can experiment some more, perhaps by adding some figures from imagination (to compare!). Or by trying different methods such as focusing on the light and dark areas in your figure (the values). Or trying a '3d' approach, using construction. Many people draw these in different ways, often serving a certain purpose. Nice going already!
Also, I am not sure whether you are using any literature on drawing. If you happen to be interested, Loomis' books are popular and now free to distribute. Link below.
