ROUND #216:: Day and Night

DESCRIPTION

Day and Night

They are twins but never see eachother. When he comes out, she disappears. His presence means darkness, but her appearance brings back the warmth and light. He is Night and she is Day.

Design Day and Night.

- You can choose to do only one character (Night or Day), but ofcourse it’s more impressive if you design both!
- As personifications their appearance should be inspired by day or night, so use colors, symbolism, shapes, personalities etc. to show what these characters represent.
- Setting can be anything!
- You are free to switch the gender of Day and Night

Good luck!

Here's a quick little thing I threw together to get my juices flowing, whether I'll pursue it or not, I don't know. But I like how open the topic is. I hope it will produce some inspired results.

Im thinkin a dual identity/split personality/cross dressing theme.

Ian Barker

BAMeyer: Nice, but it seems as though Day is dominating the composition at this point. Night is just crouching in the corner.

Si_Swe: Keep track of the shapes of the composition, right now its kind of swampy. Also the colors are washed out. Looks like you have some interesting ideas going though! :)

His majesty the Bishop-King still lives, but his mind has been failing for years. As such, his twin children control the country, the son with the force of arms, the daughter with the force of coin.

Not sure if it's wandering too far off the brief to have them attached, but they are still facing opposite directions so er... this is both characters but focused on night who is elegant but obnoxious, casually ignoring the fact she'd be invisible if the day wasn't kept in some close proximity to her. As such, the pair wear each other as clothes. This sounded better in my head.

was curious. since they are twins I was sorta thinking of a mirror type image(you know you stand half your body on one side and the mirror reflects that and you look whole from just the right perspective). Would that be allowed or will I need to show more of the bodies for the 3/4ths rule? Figured since they were twins and the body will look for the most part whole that maybe it would be allowed? idk lawl

I adore Klimt, so i'm using him as inspiration for the posing on this. I'm switching the sexes because the moon represents the feminine and the sun the masculine in pretty much any symbolism... Man dominant, woman submissive... etc etc. Yin Yang...

Well, you can also say, that the sun is the source of life on earth and that it would fit better to be female, but I guess it doesnt matter. ^^

Yeah, I hear ya - although the night has that sense of mystery, and guys are always saying that they don't understand women... ie, they're mysterious! and therefore nighttime.
Anyway, its all just anthropomorphisation isn't it.

ArtByManon: Love the cloudy hair with the stars in it but (though I say this as someone who only saunters into CHOW on occasion and has never quite got it 'right himself) avoid leaving the figure completely nude; there's so much character that can be added with some good costuming. You've mentioned 'submissive' but I think dainty clothing that hints at fragility can achieve this better than a totally nude figure - which always sort of look vaguely confident and defiant.

ArtByManon
September 27th, 2010, 05:31 PM
Missile - I hear ya - although i kind of had 'mooning' in my head... haha...
I might play with costuming - although kind of like the idea of her being naked, only because its more 'natural' if you get me. But Klimt was a great one for awesome costumes - so maybe I should do that? I'll have a fiddle about next time i post.

So far, but will put stars in the hair again later

Concept : Guardians of the sun|moon valley
two twins were cursed to guard a certain place. They are engaged in infinite circle chase in the borders of the valley, attacking everything they see, never reaching each other.

He the represent o all burning sun, nicknamed "Solar Empire" for his combat power is equal of the legion.
She the represent of chilling moon, wielding all swallowing darkness, nicknamed "Ghost of the wicked blades" can slice your soul in numerous pieces.

Still working on the designs, but here's what I've got so far! Couple of rival superheroes/mutants... unfortunately for both of them, Day only has power when exposed to the sun, while Night's power is weakened by the sun... so they never really fight. Great story, huh? ;P

Here's my idea for it. The only problem I'm having at the moment is the placement of Night, I'm just not happy with the composition if he's lying there like that. I might change it so that the picture only shows his head and shoulders, like, so his looking into the distance. Opinions?

Hey guys, just got my progress so far, got into the background, didnt realise painting edge-lit clouds was so fun! Working on Ms Day at the moment, she's got a real Zeleznik/ la roux vibe going on (I'm obsessed with mohawkes on chick for some reason!) Really not happy with her face & neck so far, the angle and the fact I'm utter balls at drawing girls faces is not helping!! :P

Spacebunny I'm liking your direction so far, Night's face is looking good but I think Day's legs are much too short for her body, but it sounds like you got a handle on it!

We dont HAVE to show both of them. You can also focus on one and put more details into it.

Lifely good sketch. You're awsome at character design.
To be honest I dont like these this time. Maybe the moon face is a bit cliche or it's because adults doing biggyback jumps looks strange. ^^ I dont know.

Sakuranim i love the position of the creature and especially its neck/ head. It's a bit like chopped off but i think i get it :) As for anatomy, i think that her left leg must be a bit more think at the lower level and knee and her arm a bit fatter. Maybe try to iron out a bit the hips and boobs so to have less hard edges, which i think this style don't need. And maybe a liiiitle bit bigger the head (not so big as mine's Day...). Keep up man.

@Hoshicat:
Dont forget about composition. You really dont want to have such a large free space in you picture. If you want to put in Mr Night, than do so before colouring so the positioning is better.
Another tip is to look up how to draw circles in perspective.

@Sakuranym:
Looks very promising. In points of the anatomy, Im not sure myself but maybe if her leg int the front was a bit longer it would look better.

GeneralSilver: love your idea! The hand-kissing is a nice touch.

It feels like the details on night's face are a bit lost on mine when it isn't being viewed up close, not too sure what to do about it. Though it does feel like the concept works sort of well as an inverse silhouette so I'm trying to get the shape as neat as possible, going to smooth out the lines from night's waist down to day's torso.

@ActonArt:
Get the anatomy right before colouring.
The legs look too short and the shoulders are too low.
Try getting into the same position and check out where your elbows are and where your limbs etc can reach.

Next WIP:
I tried to render it some more and got more contrast into it.
I also tried out a canvas texture.
What do you think ?

Carnifex - Love the Venitian masks

Some progress. Had less than an hour to sketch today and I'm a bit dry on ideas for Night.

http://i697.photobucket.com/albums/vv338/silver249/CHOW/sunmoon2.jpg

I want something on his back to balance them out, but not sure what. Thinking of constellations attached to his coat.. but not sure that looks good :/
I am so open for suggestions and feedback!

I have this romantic idea here. The moon represents Night in this case and the moon can't glow without the sun. When sun isn't there, he's dark so I kinda want him romantically interested in Day.. and somehow get that.. 'never shall they meet' kinda thing.

Hooray for changed ideas entirely! So since I didn't like where my first image was going and I decided to take those characters and put them into a different pose/setting. Started with a silhouette this time.

1072657

Here we see them passing the light from one to the other. Conceptually, they are guardians of the light and when one isn't protecting it, the other does. Each dawn and dusk, they meet and exchange places, but they can never exist at the same time.

The day is youthful, bright and energetic and the night serene and more mature.

ArtByManon: Thatīs a really great character. Itīs got tons of charm. There is something that doesnīt seem quite right with her costume on the left. Shouldnīt those bands wrap around her hip more?

GeneralSilver: Your day character makes a very strong connection, but your night character seems to be lost by all the focus given to day. Maybe give him something to do with his hands?

I got to try this one as well.

Brandozer- I lol'ed at yours. Very cool.
Missile- Very original concept, love it!
Manon- I like her face and hair. Maybe give her a little more space on the left side?

My Idea is, that night is days shadow, intrinsically tied to the light. Actually a part of her but she is oblivious of him.

Really liking all the different methods people have come up with to combine the 2 characters. My favorite method so far is probably missile, my only thought is maybe the guy should have hips. The woman merges at the knees, whereas the guy appears to merge at the waist. just a thought.

I doubt I'm going to find the time to do both characters but I have a rough design for day/light. Just trying to decide what pose to put her in, anyone have a suggestion?

pixelfuter I like blue pencil on grey paper.:). one thing I would suggest
is to figure out if your anatomy ,face, hands and costume are all working for
you in just line. before you start rendering it out. This saves a lot of time.

Mr. Gadbury: I love your concept and the way you've integrated the two figures but focused on night... however, I liked the original coloring you had because it evoked a golden hour of morning or dusk, either when night is just coming on or going out... I felt it evoked a deeper mood.

Crysse: I enjoy your style. Hope you get to work more on your piece...

Brandozer: I love your cartoony style, your lines, and the energy of your day and night in general, but my wife is disturbed by the central location of the piggyback "anatomy." Perhaps it's not so much adults doing a piggyback that's got a couple of individuals screwing their noses but piggybacking where at least one adult is nude... ?

Initially wasn't going to enter this round, but I've found a bit of free time. First, and hopefully not the last, wip for my entry. Going for a djinn-esque kinda character, just kind of rolling with whatever comes off the noggin right now. Kinda has a bit of an Oogey Boogey feel with the face :P Debating on having him sitting on the cloud rather than having the general cloud-legs design.

A few quick crits/comments:

MrGadbury: I like it a lot. Nice color pallete and I enjoy the owls and subtle eyes in the background. Just have to say I'm glad theyre not crows (they're a bit overdone in night pieces sometimes).

Gavin.Grey: I feel like you're focusing on the composition before the character design itself. To me they seem like Life vs Death right now.

AlexBoy: Nice work so far. Nice touch with the transparency and line color shift.

GeneralSilver: Coming along nicely! Looking forward to seeing some color on it.

shockowaffel: Nice colors, but my major gripe with this one is that it doesn't feel like a character piece. The earth is holding a lot of the attention and area and the characters are falling by the wayside. Just remember this is Character of the Week. :)

@~baxter - Man, I think you're right. It's been bugging me the whole time. The strong horizontal line through the center really just makes the image stagnate. Think I'll pull them apart and work with two characters rather than worry about trying to make them work together. I wanted a little bit of life and death in there, the sun giving things life and the night being a little creepy, but him feeling like he's under the ground is probably too much.
Great piece by the way, the only thing bugging me is the highlight on his right forearm I'm not sure how to read it.

@GeneralSilver - Fantastic sketch, can't wait to see the finished piece. someone earlier said you're losing night a bit, but I agree you can bring him back with color.

@pixelfuture - I know you know, but keep working on your anatomy. Something that helps me is to break the body into boxes and spheres and draw those in space, then draw over the top of those. That will help you get dimension as well.

Thanks for the great feedback guys.

~Baxter I like the Djinn concept, I was thinking boogey man when I saw it, but it still works. Maybe star constellation tattoos?

Here's what I got so far...just initial sketches, my idea was teenage siblings the nightowl who has pallid skin and lank hair and looks moody and the morning person who is friendly and bright and colourful. Mr. Gadburry: Cool spooky character. With those eyes it looks like an 80īs Stephen King, book sleeve :)

Missile: Good idea using 1920īs costumes. I like the deck of cards approach too. Dunno about her face being concealed. Itīs a really striking design element with the hat like that (not to mention era apropriate), so I would keep it.

Gavin.Gray: I like the look of the character faces, but the clean cut between them is awkward. I would suggest making the border between the two backgrounds blurry or removing it altogether.

MasterTroglodyte: Looks like a though pair :) I would suggest not cutting them off at the feet. Give them some space in the frame.

~baxter: I like the wierdness of it and I canīt help thinking of Earth Worm Jim :)

@~baxter - diggin' the legs, they add mass to his form. You might revisit the folds they aren't reading quite right to me. Love the pattern idea too, I'm going to do something similar with my "moon" character. Must be the stary night sky inspires patterns.

Heres a quick first take on night and day (sort of moon and sun in this sketch)
I sort of wanted moon to be a bit seacreature/big billowing cape sort of feel
because of the moons effect on the sea.

and day to be avian and spiky- with a bit of aztec...

they both have 2 pair of 'wings'

Don't think I'll be able to finish this. My intuos 4 has been dying over the last few days and is practically unusable as it is now. :(

Obstfelder- Thanks for the suggestions... you'll see below I scrapped what I had...

lach-land- Wow. I'm really digging your idea. I love the character, its expression, the mood etc. I'm hoping you'll include a skosh more contrast and texture (especially in the water? behind) and work out more highlights and complimentary colors in the figure itself. It's beautiful, truly.

Tinkered away for an hour or so.

Bit of a mish - mash-
not so much a character design-

more a picture of a feeling or ideas.

I'll put it in the chow mix anyways.

lach-land - She looks amazing ^^

This might be my final one. Gonna look it over one last time before submitting it to final with some more WIPS. Have some stuff to do today anyways.
I'm unsure of the comet on Night's hat. But oh well. Chow has been so much fun. I'm gonna spank myself into doing this again. :assspank:

Here's my design, Not sure about it. particularly wish i had time to fix the night character. The idea was that he is a shadow, so when light shines on him be becomes transparent. not sure if it works that well, but I'm submitting it anyway.

@General Silver:
I love it ! Only little things are, that I think her umbrella is a little bit too bright and one of her shoes wasnt coloured correctly.
I hope you dont mind if I save it as a reference. ^^

A bit more finalized version than the one that made it in time for the competition. I like this one a good bit better.

Here's what I had been working on. It's too late now, but thought someone might be interested.

Lots of great work here as usual!
