purposely offsetting the center point of a brush alpha?

Wondering if anyone can help me here. I'm trying to make a brush created from a gradient, so that I can have a hard edge and a soft edge while I paint, similar to an airbrush and a mask except without needing a mask. I can make something that works, but it is unwieldy because it's hard to estimate where the brush edges will line up. I'm including a picture to explain what I'm hoping is possible. Anyone have any ideas?

Create the image with the centre where you want it to be. Pop down a couple of very light grey single pixels in each of the bottom corners before selecting all and creating a brush. The should be so light as to be insignificant to the eye, but allowing lots of not painting space below you desired centre.

Then you just have to figure out all other headaches to do with brusg spacing, angle etc. I'd recommend a Intuos Airbrush pen and Painter 11 :)

Curious about the outcome, can you post an example? My first instinct would be do to a dual brush but I'm not sure if that's what you wanted.
