View Full Version : Digital Life Painting - Matador State Beach
September 22nd, 2010, 01:56 AM
This image was done on a laptop with an intuos tablet, from life at El Matador State beach near Malibu CA. I spent 3 hours in the field and 3 hours at home working out the details and color correcting.

I think that rusty metal ( ?) texture for the rock works really well!

Thanks guys, actually that texture on the rock is just a few custom brushes and the crazy part is that that rock actually looks like that!

Well, this is very pretty, obviously.
How did you get the water to look so realsitic? Custom brushes?

very nice work! the lighting on the rocks and the water is really convincing. I don't know if it's just me, but the face of the rock formation in the foreground looks like it's flat and almost completely smoothly eroded from the direction of the color striations. is that the case or is it supposed to have parts jutting out towards the viewer as well? just curious.
very pretty piece!

Yes the water reflections are done with a roundish custom brush set to high spacing and some scatter until it kind of looks like water spec, and then I'm just really careful to make it the right size as it goes back into the distance and I keep it on a separate layer in case I need to tweak. Also locking the layer and adding a soft swipe with the "color dodge" brush mode is great for getting that sun glow effect. Just make sure you are on the actual layer of the pixels of spec, otherwise it won't work right:)
Ya, looking at it again I think the rock needs more form, I don't think it was that flat and it could use a little sculpting. Thanks for the tip!

I'm not really sure what to say - I just want to keep going back to look at it to pick out all the individual things I love, but this comment would get enormous. So I'll leave it at very nice work :)

Shaddy, I checked out your blog and just wanted to say thanks for putting your lessons from AI online, or rather the homework. I'm going to have a shot at doing them as you upload them, just for kicks and because I'm really trying to improve my value and colour work :)
It also answered my initial question of how you go about painting with a laptop in such sunny conditions haha
So yeah, I know its for your class, but its cool that the public can access that stuff too :teeth:
