Nibras
September 20th, 2010, 08:24 AM
Welcome to the 100th round of teen challenge. For this special round we will be having a knockout competition known by the name of "Last Teen Standing". The rules and details are below, I hope you all enjoy and push yourselves to new levels.

Round 2

What it is ::

This is a knockout meaning that each participant will be placed in a group. You must each create a piece which follows the theme given and your piece will then be judged against your group member's works. The two people with the highest round from each group will move on to the next round and so the challenge will progress until there is a "Last Teen Standing" (yes I keep repeating that because it's cool)

Rules ::

Anyone aged 13 - 19 may take part

1. Your Piece must be created for teen challenge and no previous artwork is to be used
2. Your piece must show some indication of how you followed the theme
3. You must show at least two WIPs
4. Make sure that the piece is in before the deadline
5. Upload your images using the CA attachment manager
6. Add a border around your image with the theme, your name and teen challenge included
7. Post your FINAL image in the FINALS THREAD

Themes ::

Pick one, the choice is yours individually

God or Goddess
Prehistoric meets Future
Savage

Deadline ::

27th of September

Prizes ::

Massive Black Downloads
Scholarships to TAD

http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=196928

The Winning Piece will be used as the new Teen Challenge Banner

Proceedings ::

Round 2 will have 4 groups of 4 people. Depending on whether we want 3 or 4 rounds either 1 or 2 people will go through to round 3.
Round 3 will either be the final, so one pool of 4 people going for a true battle, or it'll be the semifinals of 2 groups and then there will of course be a 4th round which will be the final. This all depends on the number of people and drop outs that we get.

The Groups ::

Pool 1
Zelda_geek
lancer_idenoure
SkMop
xinranliu

Pool 2
Benjie
Andrew Sonea
P
Eddieee

Pool 3
Piemonster
pokepetter
OmertA

Pool 4

Pew! Pew! Pew!

Haha, I love sci-fi, especially retro suits like this. Prehistoric meets future obviously. I can just picture these two:

"Gee Frank, this looks like a bit of a pickle we're in..."
"Damn it Marlene! Less talk, more death ray!"

The leg anatomy on the female character is wacked. To start the legs are slightly too short, but it's as if her left leg is planted on the front of her pelvis sideways. Make the angle that her leg is positioned parallel to the curvature of the gesture (I hope that makes sense.) It looks good otherwise. The male character is well proportioned and everything.

Jake: Thanks for commenting, but can you maybe explain another way what you mean by "Make the angle that her leg is positioned parallel to the curvature of the gesture" (or maybe even a paintover if you have time)? Like, do you think I should straighten the knee?

Andrew, I think it's alright if there are anatomy mistakes since it's still an early sketch. Looks great though :D

i spent soooo long trying to get the skecth right. i started drawin this first piece o crap
1067924
and then had to pull the creature out and nail the design down before it started looking right. i was goin for something of a cross between a baboon, a hyena and a wolf. im happy with this sketch so far (though i might change the background) so ill start painting it hopefully tomorrow.

The middle line that turns from the chest-bone down to the bottom of the pelvis could be called the gesture. The arms and legs mirror this curve, in a sense. Right now the curvature of the legs and that spinal curvature or out of sync. It would add better dynamics, more realism, and more weight if the legs followed that curvature.

piiiieeeeee!! what the hell dude!? thats ridikuhlis! btw i like the 2nd one better. 1st ones more dynamic, but im liking the composition of the 2nd better. plus you can see more of whats going on. keep it up man, its lookin sick.

ill crit the rest while im here :)

omertA: hmm i like the bottom left...kinda hard to crit right now haha.

[/B]P[/B]: i like the contrast between the calm of the forst and then the bloody, decapitated heads ;) colors, composition, values all loook good, its just a little static right now. thats about the only thing i can see so far. good stuff

xinranliu: wow, youre like a different person now! thats a great step up from last round. hmm, their arms look a little thick...not much to say yet either. keep that drive goin!

eddieee: some cooler colors and rimlight on all the guys would really bring them forward. higher contrast too. also, watch the value on that shield, its really light right now. looks good

andrew sonea: looks fine except for, yeah, that leg thing. think of it this way. her torso is turned too much. if you draw a center line going up from her...crotch. it comes up on her side. even if she is turning her torso, that center line should have a smooth curve. does that make sense?

damn, some NIIIICE stuff this round! keep it up guys! (and nebo :))...(and any other girlies i dont know are girlies)

...seems like i have a very different take on savage than the rest of you...hmm...is it reading as "savage" to you guys?

Some calahs
future meets prehistoric = obvious generic fight scene.

Really not sure on them, I'm trying to do straight colors instead of grayscale->overlay this round.

Hehe, I guess the savage theme really struck home!

But god damn people are crazy! Seems like everybody really jacked it up a notch this round!

I'll see if I can post some of mine when I get home from work. First sketch got squashed by Pie since it was too close for comfort, and now Benjie shows up with something akin to my second sketch, haha. Oh well, that's what you get for being a slow poster! ;]

But yeah, sick, sick stuff here. We should start an art gallery.

xinranliu: Looking good. Btw, the spear is bent.
Eddieee: The horison line is too low. It should be almost at the same height as the heads of those men.
lancer_idenoure: Nice!
Tadas: The face seems slightly skewed. The colours are really nice.
Benjie: Looking good, man.
P:Awesome piece of art, dude.

Here's mine so far. Critique and tips would be very helpful. The topic is "Prehistoric meets future"

Andrew Sonea

zelda_geek: Hoho I love that sketch. Seeing as you want crits... I don't really have any major qualms with it. The main thing in my eyes is that the prehistoric doesn't really fit that well (a problem in my piece as well now that I think about it). The people in the foreground look to be somewhat advanced--they have weapons and clothing and have domesticated some sort of animal. I would try to push the fact that they are not very advanced more, as it is definitely within recent history that people were riding horses and battling like that. Really go for prehistoric.

The only other thing is that whatever they are riding does not read well. I assume you are going to fix this in later sketches, but it's something to keep in mind. I don't think they are horses, but either way I would make them have a more interesting silhouette.

EDIT: Does anyone know who will be judging this round?

Nyctalgia
September 25th, 2010, 12:06 PM
They're riding dinosaurs, Andrew.

I'm ready to call this done. I have been looking at it too long now, and can't even tell really whether the changes I'm making are improving it or not.

Any small changes or thoughts on this are very welcome and I will change it still if there is anything pointed out.

Forrest_I
September 25th, 2010, 04:11 PM
Andrew Sonea: dude, you gotta at least color that. Put some crazy sci-fi colors with it and it'd look great.

Andrew Sonea
September 25th, 2010, 04:26 PM
Hrm. I intentionally left it black and white because I thought it would have more impact this way. Anybody else care to share their thoughts on the matter? I probably won't add colour unless there is a strong general consensus on that it needs it.

Nibras
September 25th, 2010, 04:29 PM
I think colour would be brilliant, especially the more sci-fi pop art types types of colour. Just try out an over lay layer and if that works then paint on top of it with the colour, with a bit of tweaking it'll look even better

Looking great everyone lets keep having fun :)
some wips kinda my whole step process for a peice.
was having trouble with the helmet so did a still life study.

kinda have a story going on in my head while ive been working on this.

As the futures recourses minerals deplete and dwindle. Man began to seach for new ways to find energy sources to sustain life. Scientists created warp gates that bend time to go back to previous life to try and find a way to bring back anything of energy use. As the warp gate closed, some scientists were trapped back in time. Seeing things before unknown to future generations. Searching in unexplored mines. But these were not mines... these were the homes of the prehistoric creatures unknown to man today. This was the home to the brutal beasts. Smelt out by them by cean sences. The trophys of the other fallen scientists on the leader.. Rile ammo gone... Only thing his radiation water powerd pistol left with only 3 shots. Maybe this is the reason they closed the gate...

Hi pokepetter,

I think you can definitely do something more original, especially since its almost the exact same pose, color/value-arrangements, figure and design that you used for your entry in TC 80. ( http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=946632&stc=1&d=1270296402 )

I'm not trying to be an ass or anything, but I was almost certain you had submitted the same piece twice and thats why I went to look for it.

Andrew Sonea

Blah, added colour and changed a number of small things but still need opinions on it. I have no idea what I'm doing here.

Nyctalgia
September 27th, 2010, 10:09 AM
So yeah, guess what. Yeah, that's right, PS crashed just as I was adding my border and I lost aprox. 2-3 hours of work. I'm so going to strangle a hooker tonight.

Oh well, no point in crying over crashed programs. The problem is I have to go to work now, not really sure when I'll be back either.

Meh, I'll just have to do what I can tonight. God damn little man, god damn.

Andrew Sonea
September 27th, 2010, 03:18 PM
Nyctalgia: That sucks. It is always a good habit to save really often. I reach over for ctrl + s every couple minutes usually, especially near the end when it become harder and more finicky.

Nyctalgia
September 27th, 2010, 09:54 PM
Yeah, Andrew saving like a maniac now. It has crashed 6 times the last two hours, 6! By the end I was saving every 4-5 strokes.

And now I'm so tired I... can't even think of something to end that sentence, that's how tired I am! I've been up for about 20 hours, four straight which I've been standing still, I run home uphill to try to finish during the middle of the night! I'm done for.
Oh well, "final" is up (meaning I'm too tired to work more, even though I think it looks like shit)

Oh joy, I have to get up for work in three hours. Did I mention I'm very tired? :D

Edit: I realize that this post ain't making any sense, but I'm too tired to try to figure it out myself. Night people.

lancer_idenoure
September 27th, 2010, 11:36 PM
well uh, looks like its just me and benjie that still need to post their final...i need to finiiiish! i need to sleep too, ill probably get mine posted in an hour or two. good luck benjie!

and damn each one of these entries could have won a tc EASY. this rounds lookin like one of the other weeklies :)

now back to work!
