I'm pretty new to oils and still-life painting, but I've been painting my butt off and finally I'm almost done with a piece that I'm a pretty happy with.

I'd really appreciate some advice for a newb to make it work better as a piece.

3.5 x 5 in.

Thank you :)

wow, this is really impressive!
Reflections and transparencies are really difficult to do, but you made quite a convincing study. On a technical note I think you probably could've pushed your darks a bit more and increased your value range, and as with any painting, push the chroma as far as you can. Other than that nice work! I'd love to see more.

Thank you, I can see now some places that need to have the range expanded a bit (especially in the fabic). There is actually a bit of silver patterning on the fabric that I think I totally missed for whatever reason. I'll see if I can work that in today.

A little more sensitive observation of the pattern as it transitions from light to dark on the fabric. Everything in the light should be lighter including the dark patterns. On the bottle and the acorn pay more attention to the ellipses. Good job on the handling of the glass.

dpaint: Do you mean the ellipses as in the construction or forms of the light??
I've been reworking the fabric a bit to try and make it match observation a bit more. That made some other problems apparent. I'll try and get a new image up soon after I do a little more to it.

(I'm using my gf's photobox but that means I have to let the paint set in a bit or it comes out crazy reflective)

Any suggestions for help with painting ellipses--I can draw one finally, but always have major frustration when painting----Judy
