Ignore this stuff, look at the latest crap

Here's how it goes...
I've been telling myself to draw regularly for ages (it's not like i don't enjoy it) and so eventually I got sick of my laziness and decided to step in. This is my way of making me draw everyday.
The quality is likely to be fairly variable, so it might be a good idea to ignore this thread till it picks up, unless i don't post anything, in which case someone give me a kick up the butt.

To get the ball rolling:

I like the use of colour in the top one. 'Cept large amount green in the hair... that part doesn't really do it for me, but over all it's really nice and expressive.

Nothing special today, tomorrow I might scan some life drawings I did last year as well as whatever I do then.

On the way to uni, some random creatures and characters:

For transport design (started today), most of them done on the train back:

Here's some life drawings I did last year, these are all longer poses (1-3hrs of drawing for each). Sorry about the last two images, I've only got an A4 scanner and the scans only just met.

I'm about to sit down and do todays work, but I'll have to scan it in tomorrow.
I'm still not sure what I'm going to draw...

EDIT: Here we go. I think I should start concentrating on quality rather than just putting pencil to paper.

...will be appearing later, my scanners stuffing up. I'm about to do some stuff in photoshop so today's work may appear before my overdue works.

[UPDATE: March 15]
Nothing special, I think the creatures are fiarly heavily influenced by half-life (the blind green things with beaks).

hey man.

dont feel compelled to update if it inhibits the quality of the work! thats probably the most important thing I have learnt just recently.

Keep going at it, and try sketching from life, your life drawings look great. Try using a mirror for your sps, much more complicated yet will help better :)

Photoshop self portrait, not enough (read: no) colour variation but I think it's more accurate than the first:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/sp/sp04-002.jpg
Ref: http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/sp/ref-002.jpg

Drawing something everyday, and posting it here is where I've set the line. At the moment I don't think I should change that, and I do think I can improve the quality while sticking to that.

Thanks for the comments and advice, I think I might start using a mirror.

[UPDATE: March 15]
Some drawings I did yesterday. I was having a look at foster's sketchbook and really felt like getting a normal pencil in my hand, none of this blue stuff I've been using. Inspired by the Dark Tower series, hence the gunslinger theme.

I did about 1 hour today, I think it's totalled about 3 all up so far.

I think this is a much more accurate sp.
About 30 mins

Another, approaching 1 hr, but not as good, I got fed up with the eyes and changed direction.

Probably the last update for today, I did some more work on my WIP, blocking in the background. Around 30 mins.

Does anyone want to offer some perspective advice?

Okay, maybe not the last update, this is to provide a bit of background to tomorrow's work.

I've been drawing secateurs all day, but you don't want to see that so here's something else I've been working on. It's a render exercise for my solidworks class, I've been working on the background for it. I used a ref for general shape and colour, hopefully I can make it detailed enough by friday (due date). The render has to be 800x600, landscape or portrait.

Bengal-inspired piece [sketch]. I like the pose, concept and colours, but I think everything could use more work, and that the line art would work better if it was freehand rather than wacom.

Well, it's been a while since I've updated. And all I've got to show for it is cars. Since I've updated I received the gnomon dvds I ordered, feng's vehicle sketching & quick sketching, as well as belker's first two. At the moment I've learnt the most from the first of belker's and the quick sketching dvd of feng's, but I thoroughly recommend them all.

This is just a small selection of some of the stuff I've been doing, I should be posting some renderings later tonight.

Two quick renderings from the monday before easter, done during transport.

What's this? some creature designs for a chess set I have to make for solidworks, the pieces will be quite a bit simpler.

hey you've got some really good pieces here, a few little things I'd like to point out (please dont take them harshly) the guy holding the gun, (the upclose of him), why has his hand been cut out and disjointed from his arm?and two of your drawings from last year of the life drawings, the first woman sitting looking towards the viewer with her hand on her leg, her hand seems a little small and either shoulders too large or head too small making her look a bit manly and then the figure drawing of the woman turned away from the viewer you can see her breast sticking out from behind her it seems a little low, I dunno though she may have had stretchy boobs (I have spooky stories of women like that *shudders*) but other than that some really nice works would like to see more

Sems: Thanks for the crits! The guy with the disjoint hand was to make it 'easier' to draw, the idea being that drawing in straight would be easier than on an angle, I don't think I'd do it that way now. The life drawing crits seem fairly accurate. Thanks for bringing up that WIP, I may give that another try.
princeofhappiness: Thanks for the comment! I really like to experiment with colour and light, it has such a massive effect.
Started working on this month's IDM:

http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/idm/idm-see-wip.jpg
The idea is that the vest puts varying amount of pressure on the chest and/or the back after receiving 3D info from the headset. The depth sensitivity of this may be altered for outdoor and indoor use (much like a volume knob). The power pack is flat against the back. The knob will probably be on the headset and the headset can be packed away in a compartment/pocket of the vest.

Wow, very interesting stuff here.

These (http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/scrib/scrib-009.jpg) are very nice studies, even if they don't look like references they get the job done. Beautiful drawings.

I also enjoy your Icon, your perseus, and this self portrait (http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/sp/sp04-005.jpg) very much.

keep up the good work

Knight Rider Redesign for the DSG over in CGTalk:

I think I might go a bit further with this, detail it, do some more views, interior, etc. We'll see...

EDIT: another one, not so good, too neon and bleh :nohope:

Redesign of Deckard's car. Fair to say it was influenced by Minority Report. I'm going to try to work on a redesign of the cop car in the morning. Again, for the CGTalk DSG. Comments welcome on the redesign and the pic.

Did a (tiny) bit of work on a blade runner cop car (the spinner) redesign. WIP at the moment, I think I'll try to make this a finished piece, unfortunately I'm off to work right now, so I'll continue on it this evening.

Done a month or so ago for formula sae project, the vehicle isn't my design.
This was a project I managed. The idea with this image was to show the different groups that worked on it - panel, seat, cockpit (steering wheel, gearstick, dash, and pedals), access (guy getting in) and safety (guy with the trolley). The engineers we worked with had a thing for chops and aviators. The wheels look like crap and there was a mistake with the body, there's suppose to be an intake below the indents, these were as a result of me rushing to finishing it between midnight and 4 am.
All PS, I used a rhino file as a reference, I'm not sure how long it took all up.

Another WIP. I thought my sketchbook was somewhat lacking in 'gun toting' action. So here's something post-apoc/post-punk/medieval.

Oh yeah, comments are welcome, otherwise I feel like I'm talking to myself.

Now I'm off to try my hand at environments.

Worked on a female portrait. Sketched it in ArtRage, took it into PS to work out the colours resulting in:

Then took it back into ArtRage:

Done since the last update, another practice with female faces:

and something for the DSG over at cgTalk. Title was 'the little noise inside the closet'. The previous topic had been 'when stuffed animals go psycho'.

Trying to get into shape for the T-DOME, did a quick sketch, although doodle might be more correct, as I only had a vague idea of what I wanted to accomplish. His right shoulder and that area are a bit funky, I don't think the anatomy's particularly great, probably a good reason to be doing this.
And can you believe it?! No colour!

EDIT: Another quick one, much prefer this. Any anatomy crits are very welcome.

I hereby welcome you to the SSG#6!

I really like the last environment piece. Also the cars and chess pieces, although I would really like to hear your thought process for the concepts behind the chess pieces (ie why you felt that each piece should look that way...)

Keep posting!

For a birthday card for mum. She turned the big 5-0.
It goes a something like this:

We always knew you'd reach it...
http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/scrib/mums_bday-reach.jpg
...and we decided to get you a tennis court

...Unfortunately...
http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/scrib/mums_bday-carry.jpg
...we couldn't work out where to put it

I was rushed, OK!

Oh yeah, I got a book on Frazetta yesterday and all i can say is   :jawdrop:

Thanks for the comments, i think your absolutely right, my froms really need a push.

My T-Dome entry, vs. Britt:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/t-dome/r1-demon_prince-v_britt-final.jpg

Two earlier concepts:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/t-dome/no-1.jpg
(head definitely needed work)

http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/t-dome/no-2.jpg
I think I should've continued with this rather than the one I chose.

The initial pencil sketch that I developed into my entry:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/t-dome/skeletor.jpg
(prefer the head here)

And a (very quick) demon sketch I did today, that I really wasn't inspired to work on any longer:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/laing/phil/t-dome/late-sketch.jpg

EDIT: And there should be some more car stuff coming soon.

Well I'm flying to Tokyo tomorrow, staying there the night, then flying to Milan where I'll be studying at the Politecnico di Milano for a semester. So lots of sketching on the plane and once I hire a computer and sort out my internet they should get posted, that is, if I work on anything other than T-dome, because Xia is a tricky bugger, always watching :er:. I should probably pay for the Prague workshop soon, hate to miss a workshop that I can actually reach fairly easily.

Anyway here's my last pic in Australia for a while, it's for fathers' day (which is tomorrow in Aus), and since I'm leaving in the morning and my brother is away, I felt this was appropriate, it's fairly accurate as far as a caricature goes.
