I'm quoting a potential client for an illustration project that they want to own the copyright for so that they can use it in marketing outside of their website. What's a ballpark markup (percentage wise) for selling the rights to a work? How should I handle this in my contract?

I know this is the part where people will refer me to the GAG handbook, but my local bookstore has never had it and I'm flat broke in any case. If anyone who's experienced with this sort of situation has any suggestions, I'd be grateful.

50-100% is pretty common, though more is also reasonable in some cases.

The real answer is "whatever they will pay". You should reserve the right to use the work for self-promotion, and make sure they know they have to pay more (another ~100%) to own the original (if there is one).

Ah, thanks!

In this case, no, there's no physical original. But it's good to know the procedure in case I move to natural media in the future.
