March 6th, 2004, 10:49 PM
I have been reading the book Maya 4.5 by Savvy and made this a few days ago. I haven't been using the program for very long pretty much around three weeks. Tell me what you think.

d, your model as some neat things going for it, I like the overal ship, and i like the lighting effect (alot of people at first cant see to get objects like lights to glow right). The texture is cool too on the ship (maybe post a wire of it), im not sure if u created the look through the skin w/ a bump map, or just modeled the ship like that. I dont care for the bg though, its to distracting from the image. Please post more when u get a chance on this.

i gotta agree the ship is looking pretty good, that background is very distracting though.

Thanks for the crit man, I appreciate it. Yes I agree that the bg is way too intense. I have a wf version of the image, so you can see what it looked like before I textured it. I really like your work by the way, the glock you did is very nice.
Thanks for the crit as well. You and dgannon are too right. The BG is way to distracting... I'll have to change it to something a little more subtle. Thanks again for the comments.
A question to you both if I may...
What 3D work should one include in a portfolio when trying to get a job in the gaming industry? I have been trying to get a job in the Gaming Industry for awhile but my lack of 3D knowledge is a prob. Thanks again

My advice is just keep pushing your skills, learn your program well and produce work to show it. Getting your first job is always the toughest.
If you have the polycount to spare on your ship you might also want to try beveling some of the edges a little so you dont quite have 90 degree angles. Otherwise looking good but you dont want to have things generally looking too cubic if you are showing modeling skills.

Thanks for the crits. I agree with you totally, the rigidness of the ship is bugging me. I'll change it and see what happens. Thanks for your time too, I very much appreciate it. Getting this first job is like beating my head against a brick wall LOL, but I'm clawing my way there, inch by inch.

boy Dyoung, im still trying to figure out myself how to break into games (unemplyed :( ) BUT i can say this, quality over quanity is key, make sure the the images on your site are the very best you have to offer. I also think that you should make a really phat model w/ a sweet skin, then do 3 or 4 low poly ones models. I dont think it really matters what type of models, characters are very popular bu ttry your hand all all of these: character/ weapon/ building/ vehicle. Maybe you will be good at all four, or maybe just 2, but once you find your nitch run with it, and have fun. I also found the hardest part for me in 3d is to get started, but after that intial stage, things come together pretty fast- and it becomes fun.
It looks like your going at it the right way w/ a mix of 2d and 3d, if u can do both your much more viable in games.
I really hopes this helps! GOOD LUCK and keep posting!!!:chug:

yeah tell me about it, I graduated in 03, and am still unemployed. But, since I've applied to I think almost every game company in existance, it's given me a chance to get alot of different points of view on the matter of portfolios vs. 3D exc... It's kinda discouraging, but hey nothing worth while is easy right? Thanks for the comments. and the advice.

 dude the model is ok but that image plane almost made me vomit, if your gonna use image planes find some that are larger then 1620 px/ 2000 px and find some goods ones.

Thanks for the info. Yeah the model is ok and it does need alot of work but hey I'm just starting in this 3D stuff. As for the background LOL you choice of words is very astute. Yeah it does kinda suck. But I have no idea on how to insert background images yet and as you can see, my first attempt is not very good. Thanks for the crit though, I appreciate the time.
