I can't claim that the above subject is a typo; you all need to be fair-warned. My name is Adam. I might have introduced myself once before, but I believe, even then, that this introduction might warrant another post.

I'm taking this seriously. Art. Drawing.

I'm hitting the ground running and I don't care enough to look back.

My goal is to draw one thing every day for the rest of my life and ultimately become a better artist.

The reason I warn the forums is two-fold. 1) You will be seeing a lot of me. 2) You will also be seeing a lot of my bad work. I am not good, but I hope to be with constant vigilance.

Due to the nature of my current Job, I've been able to get a significant discount on a Cintiq 21ux; that's not to say I have it my hands yet, but It's making it's way to me. Hopeful that does some credit to show you how serious I am about this.

My only concern is I don't know where to start. People keep on referring to "simple shapes" and "anatomy" and I see myself hitting road blocks once I leave references.

I don't know how I will get the pictures up on the forums right now without my tablet, but I will think of something when I'm in the shower today.

That being said, I can not wait to meet you guys and see all of your wonderful work, it's always a constant reminder that there is something to be learned.

With love, Adam.

Greetings Adam :)

Don't worry about sucking in the beginning, we've all been there (Michelangeo, Caravaggio, and Da Vinci all had to start somewhere).

Neat that you can get a 21" Cintiq, I myself have a 12" one. But I actually use it more as a tablet than an interactive pen display.

Anyway, onto this...

My only concern is I don't know where to start. People keep on referring to "simple shapes" and "anatomy" and I see myself hitting road blocks once I leave references.

Simple shapes are essentially simple rudimentary objects, like spheres, cubes, cylinders, cones, etc. Almost everything in the universe can be built with these objects. For example, the human torso is an egg shape (Or cube if you want, different people prefer different shapes/objects), the pelvis a rectangular block (Or an oval, or simply 2 discs), the face and cranium are cubes and ovals respectively, and the limbs are essentially cylinders. If you're confused, I can do a quick sketch to show you what I mean.

Anyway, as for where to start - go to life drawing classes in your area. It'll be hard if you live in a rural area, but if you live in a big city like me (Hong Kong here), there should be some. Hell, I would go every single night for 3 hours just doing 1 minute poses if I could, but alas, as much as HK is a world city, it ain't Paris.

And remember, don't be discouraged, your art will suck in the beginning. In fact, I performed SO badly in my very first figure drawing session (Everyone else's were master pieces), I chucked the drawings in the bin, left early, and went home crying. Not metaphorically, I mean literally crying. Then again, I was suffering from depression at the time. In anycase, my pearl of wisdom would be this: try to enjoy the process/journey and not so much of the end result. If you do the latter, you will be depressed all the time, as when you're a beginner, your stuff will not be good.

Anyway, just keep drawing. Draw at least 1 to 3 hours a day, Draw draw draw! You will get there.

And for inspiration, here's (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=870) MindCandyMan's journey. He went from total noob to HOLY F!@$UI#^ godly pro in several years.

Anyway, if you need some help, feel free to PM me.
