View Full Version : Teen Challenge 100 :: Last Teen Standing

Nibras
September 3rd, 2010, 06:38 PM
Welcome to the 100th round of teen challenge. For this special round we will be having a knockout competition known by the name of "Last Teen Standing". The rules and details are below, I hope you all enjoy and push yourselves to new levels.

Round 1

What it is ::

This is a knockout meaning that each participant will be placed in a group. You must each create a piece which follows the theme given and your piece will then be judged against your group member's works. The two people with the highest round from each group will move on to the next round and so the challenge will progress until there is a "Last Teen Standing" (yes I find it awesome to use that)

Rules ::

Anyone aged 13 - 19 may take part

1. Your Piece must be created for teen challenge and no previous artwork is to be used
2. Your piece must show some indication of how you followed the theme
3. You must show at least two WIPs
4. Make sure that the piece is in before the deadline
5. Upload your images using the CA attachment manager
6. Add a border around your image with the theme, your name and teen challenge included

Themes ::

Pick one, the choice is yours individually

Light
Magic
Death
Ancient

Deadline ::

11th of September

Prizes ::

1st Place :: 3 Massive Black downloads of your choice
2nd Place :: 2 Massive Black downloads of your choice
3rd Place :: 1 Massive Black download of your choice

The Winning Piece will be used as the new Teen Challenge Banner

Proceedings ::

From every pool 2 people will go through to the next round. We will make some exceptions though so there may be more then two people as long as the overall group numbers stay even.
Round 2 will have 4 groups of 4 people. Depending on whether we want 3 or 4 rounds either 1 or 2 people will go through to round 3.
Round 3 will either be the final, so one pool of 4 people going for a true battle, or it'll be the semifinals of 2 groups and then there will of course be a 4th round which will be the final. This all depends on the number of people and drop outs that we get.

Judging will be done by us through voting

Hokai, here's my first ever attempt at a thumbnail. Its not exactly got the dynamic awesomeness that everyone else will have, but it's adventurous in my standards :P

I went for Ancient, and immediatley got flashes of a sort of tortoise titan that roams its home planet slowly and endlessly. Yeah those are supposed to be volcanoes and trees and stuff on his back, hahah! :nohope:
I was also thinking that the natives of the island on his shell painted him as a form of worship. I dunno lol.

This is going to be such an uphill struggle for me hahah :nohope:

Drew Walker
September 4th, 2010, 05:06 PM
Cool tortoise ! I think if you change the pose so the head and neck is defined clearly in the silhouette that'll make it stronger. Get some reference for those legs (elephant possibly) !

Here's my first vague attempt at something on the theme of magic, a block in and the initial sketch. Generic scenario; sorceress chick floating in the air surrounded by roses in a skimpy dress. I've not done something so imaginative or illistrative before, so beware of extreme ugliness ! I'm not to sure what to do with the background yet, whether to put in clouds or whatever.

I hope it's ok to use reference like this ? Is that cheating ?

Humm it looks like the right leg is outa wack. Well, I blunder on.

A lil WIP for ya ! I've put away the reference now, but i'll probably break open the bridgman and the peck because I haven't actually learnt anatomy >.< ! Faaaaail.

Things to do :

- Make face more attractive.
- Make everything more attractive.
- Decide background content, look up some similar artwork/reference.
- I think it needs another layer of dynanisism/interest, but background may suffice, i'd better find out the hard way...
- Look up how transparent cloth behaves in sunlight.
- Correct skin tones for sunlight temp and reflected light (Research subsurface scattering while you're at it.)
- Simply values (SARGENT :asslick: :D) and push the values on the dress !
- Mooore smexy roses (Oh and look up what roses actually look like you birk.)

Sorry for rambling, I think posting my thoughts will keep me motivated and give some structure to the problem solving. (Which is all that painting is...)

Ok i'll probably do some research before I go to bed. 'Night people !

CRITS!
loki: legs are too long, push values in the skin, and like everywhere, just to show you adjust the levels in photoshop, see how much better it looks, but dont just do that, study the values and colours in Sargents try to pick the same colours as that, same with the fabric, sargent alwayss paints that soo fucking beautifully!! what topic are you going for? it doesnt read as any of them to me, and crack out the bridgman your anatomy is off, especially the legs. they look like one big form, rather than the thigh, the knee, the calf the angle the foot, it just looks kind of like pants in yours. and brushstrokes are imporatant, use a larger brush to cover larger areas, dont use a small brush to cover large areas, like you did. and edges are very important too! so overal, anatomy, colours, VALUES, edges. go get 'em
Omerta: yours looks really nice, just not readable, just keep working at it, youll get there
sulphur: this isnt a thumbnail, its a sketch. sorry i had to correct you, a thumbnail is a very small 5 minute line and value drawing, to nail composition and come up with some nice shapes and silhouttes. i think you should do 10 thumbnails before you start, i personally have been doing thumbnail sketches all weekend for mine ;)
Sacari: DUDE YOUR LINES ARE DELICIOUS! i can't wait to see it coloured in photoshop! if you need help with anything photoshop related, dont hesitate to PM me :)

i'll upload some more thumbnails later, i think ill go with an enviro/character scene

September 5th, 2010, 06:36 AM
Thanks for the awesome crit man ! I'll get started makin' it no so retarded. But maybe i'll keep the legs a lil' bit longer than her other half as a stylistic choice. And urgh, she is blobby !!!

I think yout left thumbnail is the strongest, but I think you'll need some other narattive elements - lookup Phillip Straub for inspiration by the way, he does some similar pieces -, I think the river on it's own would be a nice piece of enviro design but boring ! First thing that comes to mind is disgusting, evil creatures slithering into it and emerging from the other side as angelic, beautiful things.

By the way, how large should I be working ? It's been at 1000x1500, is that too small ?

ryan mcshane
September 5th, 2010, 07:01 AM
loki, i added you on msn so we can instant chat
1000x1500 is a fine size, i usually just go on A3 sizing in photoshop, but its all a matter of what your computer can handle and how much detail you want..
thanks for that artists name! appreciate it :)
i gathered alot of min's stuff for inspiration

Drew Walker
September 5th, 2010, 07:13 AM
Ok, great ! I'll install it on this after i've had my lunch, maybe i'll jump over to the desktop.

@ Dead Dude - What's so 'death' about that ?! Does it eat souls ? Consume the flesh of thoasands ?

@ Jenny - I think I need some alone time with my pikachu after seeing that. Anways, I think that'll look awesome if you put a realistic spin on it ! And maybe get some more funky perspective going on there ?

ryan mcshane
September 5th, 2010, 07:18 AM
jenny your image reminds me of this (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs499.ash1/27251_108987699118013_100000203491876_228186_32079 15_n.jpg) (randis' pikachu)
and also it looks like its floating, try and make it look more grounded and try to make an atmosphere :)

Sacari
September 5th, 2010, 07:24 AM
I started on mine in photoshop, this is how far I got last night before getting too frustrated....

Crits? Am I going about this right at all???
Or should I just give up and go back to traditional?

ryan mcshane
September 5th, 2010, 07:35 AM
just keep going with it sacari, block all the colours in on one layer, and have the lines on a layer above the colour layer set on multiply so you dont see the white bg, make a background colour or a midtone colour like the skin colour and just start painting on top of that, blocking all the colours in. also look at artists like, john singer sargent, bouguereau and jason shawn alexander for skin colour references and how they handle theyre brushstrokes. good luck!

Drew Walker
September 5th, 2010, 07:56 AM
Also, make a value plan of the painting (do it traditional if you're more comfortable) that you can follow, breaking down the steps into value and colour seperatley is a good approach for beginners.

You can also start grayscale and use overlay layers (Actually, i'm not very familiar with the technique, look it up yourself) to add colour.

Try to think in planes, turn the form, good luck !

ryan mcshane
September 5th, 2010, 08:02 AM
id highly reccomend not to do that grayscale technique, it doesnt teach you anything

Sacari
September 5th, 2010, 08:12 AM
Thanks a bunch for the tips everyone :) I haven't finished anything on the computer in years, so I'm going to try really hard not to climb back into my traditional cave this time...
The computer takes so long though!!! :(

Drew Walker
September 5th, 2010, 09:17 AM
@Ryanoir - I think it has its merits, professionals use it and for beginners it simplifies colour immensley. If glazing is good enougth for the old masters, then surley the digital equivalent has its use ?

Obviously I prefer direct alla prima, what James Kei described as 'kung fu painting' (sargents freakin' brushstrokes !) but technique should be down to circumstance, level of skill and personal preference.

@Sacari - With regards to medium, use what you are most comfortable with. The digital masters generally have years of experience in the 'traditional cave', they learn the fundamentals from that, and then apply them to the convinience of digital. Anyway, the important thing is to keep on pushing ! Finish it no matter what !

Sacari
September 5th, 2010, 09:38 AM
Here's my progress this morning, worked on the face. This is taking so long!!!

Drew Walker
September 5th, 2010, 09:59 AM
Put it in context, people spend 40+ hours on finished pieces, old masters spent months, years on some pieces. Patience is key, so are values. Make sure to set your colour sliders to Hue, Saturation and Value for more accurate colour picking ! It also helps you consolidate your value choices.

You look like you might need to research some facial structure. Also, make sure you don't soften evvverything, it's adding to the washed out look.
Make sure you get those eyes right (whites are too white, no roundness, you need to add lids to make the whites smaller, add darker values, use reference if you're unsure.)
People with white hair usually don't have white eyebrows by the way, even albinos are vaguely blond.

Keep going !!!

Drew Walker
September 5th, 2010, 03:43 PM
Vertical: For the topic sunrise, would it not be more appropriate to do a piece (staying tangent to your idea of murdering a king) where the king is on the ground, with the sun rising behind him, screaming with terror, a bloodthirsty figure looming over him with dagger poised to strike !

Your compositinal issues are probably arising from a neglect to do small thumbnails and a lack of understanding of perspective.

P: Looking awesome !

Eddieee: Can't see yours ? Red X :(

Vertical
September 5th, 2010, 04:05 PM
Thanks for the crit Loki! I've actually done 7 small thumbnails. They're in my SB now. You're right the perspective's lame, i haven't given it any thought yet. I will pretty soon. And thanks for the suggestion. I actually had that idea before this image popped into my mind, but I prefer this. That's too bloody for my tastes. Also, wip attached, i think it looks way better. In this one I made the knight's emblem more evident. He's supposed to represent the sun, and the king's flags are moons so he's the night. VERY SUBTLE ISN'T IT. Next step is to design everything and then I'll start using perspective and then start painting and then win hopefully.

Sacari
September 5th, 2010, 04:52 PM
So here's where I am with mine... The hair is bugging me...

Drew Walker
September 5th, 2010, 05:20 PM
Sacari: The reason the hair is probably bugging you is because you are painting tiny little strands. This creates a straw like appearance. You want to think about it like ribbons or groups of hair strands, and use a bigger brush. Here's a Gurney Journey post; http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2008/04/hair-ribbon-secret.html. There's another on hair before it.

Vertical: I actually really like that concept ! I can't wait to see a fully realised piece ! Bring it onnnnn !

Crappy WIP... Changed the size of the head, moved the legs, still need to do some more believable anatomy... I'm going to look up hair underwater so I can give it a more 'floaty' feeling. If anyone could give me advice about edges and the background, i'd be more than grateful !

Awesome work everyone!

Some crits if wanted:

Loki: Keep in mind what you want to be your centre of attention: the lady. Some of the easiest ways to do this is contrast. This being either the contrast between her and the bg (either darker bg or darker dress), as well as the range of contrast in one object, or contrast in colour. Right now what is really sticking out to me is the flowers as they have contrast with the bg on two counts. Another thing to remember is that a shdowed area of an object is not just the colour of the object + black. Human skin tends to stay very saturated throughout.

Sacari: Push the values! :) I too think doing a greyscale study beforehand helps immensly. It doesn't have to be detailed, but it should have the correct values in place. Loki gave a very good link on the hair. Also, there are a couple of ifx workshop tuts online (they should be quite easy to find on the ifx site) that go over hair quite well.

Vertical: Perspective first! Perspective is what gives you basic structure. You put a more complex design upon that structure. All of your values etc. are based upon that structure as well. If you do it later you're going to spend quite a bit of time wrecking a lot of hard work. On another note, isn't sybolism fun!!!! :D

Ok, now my little sketches. Im kinda wobbling between ancient and magic. OPINIONS are much appreciated. :) Actually, I thouht it was interesting that you could mix and match all the topics. eg. Death magic, ancient magic, magic light etc. Anywhoooo...

Wow, everyone's been super busy. I was a bit hesitant to post at first here (wanted to be all super secret like and amaze everyone at the poll), but it looks like I need a new set of eyes and some really harsh crits on this. Seriously guys, be as harsh as you want. Then be harsher--it's the only way for me to get better.

Loki: You hands and feet are what needs the most work, I think. They're just kind of blobs at this point, and they don't look quite proportionate. Another thing that's bothering me is that her shoulders have a slant, but her dress cuts straight across. I like the second one the most :)

Licorize: I love the first one! (Light)

Andrew: Definitely get a ref, your anatomy is off, especially in the legs. Awesome pose though.

licorize Nice thumbs! I feel like the sixth one would be nice if some things were tweaked and the fountain was made so it didn't steal attention away from the girl. But I'm gonna say go with the first as well, it's really good.

Loki I think I like the second one best. I hae a question though, why don't you play around with the color of the roses? They're all the same saturated red. Roses can be differently colored. And apparently lilac and purple roses symbolize enchantment, and you're going for the magic theme right? Just an idea.

0zz0 pretty nice. I think you should give the crown an ellipse on his head to make it look like it's resting on his head instead of jutting up from behind it

Vertical Darn it man, think of a composition and stick with it, you'll never get this done if you keep switching everything around!

Umm yeah, they're just blobs right now :P. I hadn't done any work on them so that's why there's no atmospheric perspective or variation in them right now. Thanks for the info, i'll look into it.

Vertical: Move one of the VP's much further away, you're getting distortion. I would reccomend getting the Carl Dobsky perspective videos to cover stuff like ground planes, eye level, measuring in 3d space, cone of vision, it's fundamental stuff that you will need. Otherwise it's cool, but make sure to make the king and his throne a mid-tone to seperate the image into three planes.

Haha, now that miles is out of the running it gives someone else a chance to win :P

Miles, it's alright, trust me I feel the same with the freelance, homeworks, essays and doing the 5 highers/ A levels but I am going to try and squeeze it in.

Messy lines in Photoshop that I probably won't clean up.

After struggling to come up with an idea, messing around with stuff from Ancient Egypt to angler fish, I got this idea in a dream.Theme is "Death", I hope it looks like its following it.

Any critiques welcome.

--
P: I like that you're doing an environment for this, it looks a bit early in stages, so I can't really critique it too well. Maybe enlarge the canvas size a little at the top so that the left statue isn't getting cut off.

Licorize: Her hand sticks out the most to me, make sure to use some reference for when you're drawing that part. Also it might help to show the other arm/hand? Maybe like supporting her on the thing she sitting on or in her lap.

Vertical: I agree with the distortion bit, the picture feels a bit squished in my opinion.

0zz0: Symmetry could help make this piece really good. Right now it's kind of slanting down from left to right, and it's throwing the picture off.

Sacari: The skintone is a big problem I think, it looks like the typical skin color "Peach". A key to skintones is to color variation, it needs some warmer colors. Definitely go for some darker value as well. I agree that there's something off with facial anatomy, it could have something to do with her looking upwards.

Loki.: The facial expression is kind of hard to read at first. I think the white dress compliments the red roses the best, and as someone said before, different colored roses would help too. In my opinion, if you were to do the white dress one, that blue isn't the best background color choice.

Inkwash: In my opinion, the most original idea! Not sure how much you were focusing on for the anatomy, but his legs need work.

Andrew Sonea Nice dynamic piece so far. His left leg is kind of twisted awkwardly in my opinion though.

Forrest I: Haha awesome sketch, love the values and negative space so far, but I'm excited to see how the 2nd creature fits in with it.

Pixie Trick, Tangmo, I suck more at composition than anything else so I can't really critique thumbs, good luck with your pieces though.

Humm should I stick with this one or do something different ? Thumbs included. I think maybe if I push the narrative it'd be more succesful... Dunno. I'd appreciate some input on the story telling aspects and all that jazz.

What I intend to do is so ridiculously overambitious and there's no way I can pull it off in a week... I don't really care. I really want this piece to be one of if not the best I've ever done.

I plan on showing the metaphysical interconnectedness and duality of life and death and light and darkness. There is death in life, light within darkness, etc... I am going to attempt to illustrate this. I'm going to do it in pen and ink.

I'll enter it into the competition but if I don't finish it in time, I'll keep working on it despite the deadline being through.

Loki.: I really like that second thumb you posted, it does have more of a story and I like the color scheme. You've expressed some frustration at the other piece and you still have 4 days so go for it if you're looking for a change!

xinranliu: I like the titans idea! I think you should really push the lighting from the lightening and fire though, because the titans look enough like stone they don't need to be all brown.

Great work everybody!

Finally been blessed with some time tonight though, so I got cracking on Monsieur Tortuga today. Theres no way I'll have time to do all the mountains and trees on his back so i'm just going to have volcanoes instead - should still add all the tribal marks at the end though :)

Sulphur: I like the longer legs, but they look a bit wobbly. It looks like he just got new legs and aren't used to them yet.

Vertical: There is still some perspective issues there, like the stairs aren't matched up with everything else (the banners for instance). The figure in the chair isn't very readable at the moment, he looks like he's leaning out of the chair but I'm not sure. I'm not really that good with color, but to me, the rainbow colors on the ceiling aren't doing anything for me.

Pixie Trick: I think the perspective a little off. Sorry for not having anything better.

Eddieee: Looking good so far! One thing I'm not sure about is the skull on his shoulder. It's just there, if it was a shoulderplate, it should be covering the top of the shoulder too, right now it looks kind of off to me. I think his left hand needs work too. Great colors on the piece so far though.

Everyone's looks so wonderful... :O

As far as crits go, I dont really see anything that hasn't been pointed out already. Only one tip I feel I can add.

Forrest_I: I like the effect so far, but it'd be neat to add some more dramatic lighting. A dark background (Night time or a cave perhaps) and a very bright fiery flame would create a more interesting look, I think.

Also, don't forget to harden up those edges near the neck and wing. :P

And here's my second WIP... I still have a ways to go, but hopefully ill finish it in time. I'll probably be part of the last minute submissions on Saturday though.
Feel free to add crits, too! I haven't done anything to the dress since the last WIP, so I'm aware that the lighting is pretty off.

Tangmo
September 9th, 2010, 08:47 PM
@Licorize: This isn't really much of a crit, just more of a suggestion and I hope it helps. I'm thinking that leaving her other arm out isn't bad, but positioning it so the viewer can see it could be something to try out. Maybe have it resting on her lap or lightly touching her face with her other hand can add more of a sensual mood and release some of the stiffness. Btw, I'm loving how her hair is so sculpted!

Other than that, there's not much I can critique on. You guys are doing awesome! ;_;

Here's my WIP. I think this is the only idea that could be done by Saturday lol, I just hope I can finish this. The theme is magic, and her reflections are taunting at her new "dress". I need a LOT of critiques (especially on the composition and perspective/foreshortening) so the process can go smoother for me and to at least squash any mistakes.

So "real life" took hold this week. This has been one of the busiest weeks I've had in a long while, between school, commissioned work, and a concert I'm playing in tomorrow which has demanded a ton of work. If I have time tomorrow after the show I'll try to make something up quickly, but until further notice I am resigning from this competition. I thought it'd be much earlier when I signed up and this has been just the worst timing.

So this officially makes me the WORST teen artist on the site... Prod me and point and laugh, if you'd like.

Isolated.. not knowing where the future leads. The flowers drift in the wind as she lets go of her memories the final good bye. Death.

All I got done were a bunch of thumbnails that I don't really feel like posting. Sort of had a shitty week. Sorry, folks.

A planet escaping from the darkness and into the light, oooor maybe it's the other way around. 'cause that turned out to be one freaky nebulae!

Anyhow, had planned a lot of more details/planets/stars/spaceships and other goodies. But the commission that was supposed to take one day took six, so I didn't really have time for this. Nebo, you're allowed to spank me now. :(
Oh, and on the topic of spanking, I owe you one since there's no finals thread yet!

Edit: Oh fuck it looks like planet-pacman escaping from nebulae-ghosts.

This week was absolutely hectic! Unfortunately my school work has to take precedence over TC :( so there hasn't been much progress and I'm wondering if I'll actually be able to complete it on time.

Here's a wip anyway.

Well I was a bit pressed for time and on the verge of falling asleep while finishing this, so it's certainly not exactly what I hoped it would be. However I did enjoy working on it, and feel it helped me improve a bit. :)

She's supposed to be a sort of embodiment/sorceress of light who is currently summoning some of her minions. ;P
