View Full Version : Photoshop with a Corel Painter's feel?

When you look at someone's digital painting, you can usually tell with which software it was done, weather it was done in Photoshop, Painter or SAI.

I simply love the "pasty" effect that Painter final pieces bring. But the speed and stability issues are driving me crazy!

Do you guys think that with the right brushes and skill (no filters) it would be possible to get the same effect with Photoshop?
Or is it just impossible simply because of the way the painting engine works?
Because of my lack of skill i am unable to try this, so i'm wondering if someone with more photoshop experience can answer this.

If it's any help the feeling i am trying to create is very similar as this http://ochrejelly.deviantart.com/art/Masquerade-104863112?q=&qo=

Any painting style you can do Painter you can do in Photoshop. It just takes longer, or at least requires a more roundabout way of achieving the effect. It's more important to be very well acquainted with and practiced at the style you want to emulate. That way you can duplicate it in either program.

I need to say I disagree with the OP on what program you can tell someone painted with. Some intermediate (art) maybe and some you can, but definitely not all or even a lot can you tell these days.

Main reason why is due fact many can do the same in any program, and on top of that many end up using multiple programs.

How can you say that since you yourself have done this and you can clearly see that each one has a different feel to it.

Gonna take a leap of faith and say the first one is Photoshop, second one is Painter and third one is SAI, the rest i have no idea since i probably don't even know the programs.

As far as I can see, though they're done in different programs and with different "mediums" they're basically the same style-- one that it wouldn't be too difficult to emulate in any of the other programs, judging by the quality of each iteration.

Painter, Photoshop, etc are just tools after all. As long as you understand the basics behind what you're doing, you can get whatever style you want out of them.

An example from an artist I follow:

Can you post the links to the full images so i can see them better?

Yes that's exactly the point, you use the same style yet it looks different in each program. But can you really use the same medium?

One of the reasons i'm having doubts is because if you try a normal basic round brush with thickness sensitivity (hardness 100%) in each program, and do a close-up you will notice that the photoshop has the most smudgy line, followed by painter and last by sai who makes the sharpest line.
This is one of the reasons i always get a "smudgy" feeling from a photoshop instead of "pasty" feeling that Painter can do, and the "sharp" feel from sai.

And you're wrong on your guesses except for Sai which I left on default settings. That's exactly why I said you really can't tell all the time.

Each one has a different feel that I did on purpose. One is actually extremely obvious the program but that's because I was the least familiar with it and gave it a go. (Which actually was NOT Sai Paint)

Now I can actually make it more confusing and have different programs emulate the looks of the 6 pics you see.

So you're thinking of what Painter looks like is incorrect, and maybe you should think of how I achieved each effect to make it different than thinking it's the program that did it.

What do you mean by "pasty"?

I think he or she meant the level of opacity in painter strokes which can look a little bit more solid and less transparent depending upon your level of saturation. Although the same "pasty/chalky" look can very very easily be achieved in photoshop.

I posted some tools for photoshop here (http://www.deviantart.com/download/177088635/wayne__s_photoshop_tools_by_artmessiah-d2xfmgr.zip). I tried to emulate a painter and grainy blender brush in there - check it out maybe it has what you're looking for.

What version are those tools presets from? I only have CS1 and they didn't load.

Any way to load those brushes in a higher version of Photoshop?

Hmmm, I'm using CS5. Try downloading again I re-upped (http://www.deviantart.com/download/177088635/wayne__s_photoshop_tools_by_artmessiah-d2xfmgr.zip) the file to make sure it was saved properly.
