just finished doing the concept designs for the machines and the martian from war of the worlds. i thought i would go ahead and post all of my initial sketches along with the finished versions. i think this is the most involved i have ever become on a concept process so far and it was a good learning experience. i never really did the whole ink/marker type thing before, and its challenging for me. its hard to be very clean and precise. but anyway, here u go.

nice concepts! I like the organic feel of the robots and the marker rendering (and coloring too). I was curious as to what the deal is with the "martians". Are they just heads or was this a head study? reminds me of greedo, good work!

josh and ty: wow really? i wonder why they are being so slow. they are all around 80 k each or so. maybe my server was just being slow. i hope they load up faster for you.

jackal: thanks! haha, holy shit it does look like greedos head! ok, the book describes them as: a huge rounded mass with big eyes, v shaped mouth, and 16 tentacles. so they are basically just a big head i guess you could say.

Hey cool designs dude. I tried to redesign the martian tripod a while back and I must say we came up with some very different designs :)
I like teh Martian very much. But I was wondering. Didn't they have 3 eyes? I thought the whole Martian sociaty was based on 3's. 3 tripods per squad, 3 squads per battle group, 3 legs on the tripod. Or was that just a movie and TV show thing? It's been a long time since I read it and the movie and TV show might be making me remember things that weren't there.

I really dig your ideas of the fighting and work machines, I don't think I've ever seen them conceptualized quite like that. I believe the martians were described as having two seperate groups of 8 tentacles, however, and it looks like you've got them all in one bunch. Despite that tiny crit, your martian still kicks ass.

liche: yes, they are in two groups of 8. if you look i have one group of 8 in the foreground, and the other group of 8 is in the back done with only marker, basically to save time as well as the confusion it would cause having all 16, especially since the mouth might get a little lost against all the tentacles.

machine god: no, the book states that they have 2 eyes.
